  1. Really good information. I replaced the EGR thinking it'll help with mpg. When I pulled the stock EGR it was full of corrosion to the point where I don't think it even works. So. I installed the new one anyway and nothing changed. Figure if my PCV works that's good enough. Great write up very useful information. Thanks!!
  2. So I noticed if the Brat sits for a day the fuel starts to drain back to the pump. Haven't found leaks so I plan on draining the gas (6years old) and maybe flush the tank. Has anyone flushed theirs? Suggestion? Also just received: 1. new fuel pump and filter 2. studs to install the headers My garage is full of motorcycles right now so hopefully I can move them out and install the parts this weekend. Updates after its done.
  3. Have you checked your fuses? Some times its that simple. Then I would pop the top on your disty check the cap for cracks, corrosion, fouling, and if the rotor is damaged. Do you have a shop manual?
  4. Where did you get the axle from? I need to replace front passenger axle and steering knuckle on a 81 Brat. Thanks
  5. I don't know about the ej. But just basic trouble shooting I'll start with gas making sure the pump working then spark etc. Etc.. You have everything wire in? Might be your problem if it's not.
  6. Wish we had that where I live but its a small small community and basically metric things has to get ordered from out of state. But my parts should be here soon and hopefully I'll be driving her by Monday.
  7. If you take off the disty cap you'll be able to tell if there's damage. Check the rotor and excessive play in the shaft.
  8. Have you pulled the cap from a plug to check for spark coming off the disty?
  9. I'll try that once I get it on jack stands and have a block to support the pipes.
  10. I have aftermarket gaskets that's "high grade" and my brother has the new studs shipping out to me. Should have it by Sat. So hopefully I won't have to invest in heli coils. Even though I'll like to have them. I'll check to see if the studs are broken off. Hope it is not. I'll keep you guys updated once I get all the parts. Thanks again!!
  11. Thanks DaveT this really helps a lot. I'll go looking for those studs soon. Worse case I'll have to order it with my new axle and housing. I'll post what I find. Thanks!!
  12. That's good to know. I went and got metric bolts but I was worried about stripping stuff. Did a dry run just turning it with my fingers and after 2nd turn it was so tight I had to use a tool to remove it. So is the 10mmx1.25 the correct studs for my 1981 ea81?
  13. Replaced EGR valve, new air filter and breather element. Still idle at 1500rpm better then 2k-3k
  14. All measure should be taken into consideration yes. My point was it takes less then a minute to saw through the steering wheel then pull the club out. Deterant wise I would be more intimidated by a flashing light that looks like a alarm. Either way you have good points as well. Hope this helps the guy out. Have a good one guys.
  15. A hack saw to the steering wheel would make the club useless. And having a removable steering wheel won't stop a person if they really wanted the car. Just ask my brother his got stolen with out a steering wheel!! Only thing that has kept my cars from being stolen is kill switch or the "chip" but I don't recommend the chip. I've broken mine n it can't be replaced.
  16. So I go to spray penetrating oil on the bolts to replace those gaskets tonight and realized there's a missing bolt on each side!! Do I just get any metric bolt and see if it fits? Or do I just take it to a shop?
  17. The way I checked my electric choke was I ran a jumper from battery + to the one wire on the choke housing. As the thermo spring warmed up the butterfly should slowly open. Mine wouldn't even get warm. So went to the parts store and for $16 I got a manual choke. Very simple to install. This coming from a test light n wire cap mech.(me)
  18. Have you looked at kill switch's? My brother was looking at putting a few in his Brat. Just so if they find one hopefully they wouldn't look for a second.
  19. OK thanks I'll look it up tonight. Might have to go buy a torque wrench and figure how to set it properly. Hopefully after this weekend it'll be back on the road.
  20. What's a heli coil and where would I find it? Hopefully I can get it done soon. Been wanting to drive this thing!
  21. I'm needing advice on the simpler way to put gaskets onto the pipe to engine. I was to loosen the bolts and slide them in. Is it possible. If not what all would I have to remove to mount them? Thanks
  22. So I got new gaskets to attach the exhaust pipe to the engine. My questions are. Can I unbolt and slide the new gaskets on. ? If not how have you done it? Would I need to remove the exhaust sys. All the way back to the cat?
  23. Im having the same issues on a 1981 EA81. others have suggested spraying carb cleaner around the hoses to check for cracks. i cant try it yet due to exhaust pipe not connected to motor. keep us posted.
