NAPA or Kragen -
Possible culprits: Fuel filters MAF Knock Sensor Coolant Temp Sensor Bad spark plugs Bad plug wires. Ive had all of those malfunction when i owned my RX. They all caused hesitation and sputtering when under boost. -Brian

No, i was born in Chicago, but raised in Alaska, where they did salt the roads. I know about rust Here is a picture of an A-Bar i got from the Hayward pick-your-part way back in the day (probably 4 years ago or something). It was a CA car, so i assume it was sold in CA. Title, registration, documents i found all verified its residency in the bay area. Some of the worse rust ive ever had to deal with.

They might not salt the roads, but they are awefully close to the coast. And the wind comming off the saltwater seems to do a number on the old sube's in the area. A buddy of mine, ShannonSF, lives there. And his Subaru is all but gone due to the rust problem there. We hit the hayward yard a few years ago, and saw rust problems on almost every subaru there. If you want the subaru junkyard of all junkyards, head to Carson City Nevada! -Brian

Me and a coworker headed out for our 1st real trip. We decided to take a moderate trail, starting in Strawberry CA via Highway 50, and using some forrest service trails we made our way to Highway 88. I believe the gap spans 3 to 4 miles. Pretty easy going, with a few hairy spots along the way. The truck performed pretty good. My gearing has much to be desired for, and my buddies truck has no shocks, just really soft springs, so I was left carrying the majority of the gear. All in all, it did pretty good with little body damage. Here is a video of some of the tough spots. There were a couple more, but I ran out of tape in the camcorder. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-9164480549194483518 I think im going to start saving for a doubler kit before I take the truck out again. My clutch is hating life. -Brian

Old Subaru press photos

I would be that Brian Glad to see you made it over here. Your page is awesome, i spent some time last night surfing through it. However, the navigation is alittle difficult. I had to type in http://www.oldjapanesecar.com to get to your main page, which is where i found your links page. But from the links page, there is no way back to the main page. And from the main page, i was unable to find the subaru page, or any other page that may contain old japanese car pix. -Brian -
Well the 1st time i put it on its side was an accident. Was trying to straddle a pretty deep rut, had my passenger side tires on a wall, rut under me, and my drivers tires on the edge of the rut. I drove into the rut, drivers side tires fell in, and the truck went onto its side: It was so much fun, i had to do it again! The 2nd time was on purpose. I found a good spot, the camera man was rollin tape, so I picked my line and braced myself. The footage is in the video's forum. The rubicon trip is on hold. This weekend (Aug 18/19) we were planning to do it. But the FOTR (Friends of the Rubicon) are planning a trail cleanup that weekend... and they will be cleaning the Wentworth Springs Campground entrance. THe very campground we planned on staying at. So then we planned on running Deer Valley, but it turns out the Sierra Hi/Lo's are doing their annual Poker Run there this weekend... so we are going to run another local trail in Strawberry instead. Hoping to have pictures, maybe even footage. I got my Hysteer kit today and started installing it. Tomorrow I have to mount the IFS box and weld the bracket in place. Then if i can find the time I'd like to mount my onboard air, but other than that im itchin and (almost) ready to go! -Brian

Crashed the loyale...
TheSubaruJunkie replied to TheBush's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I did that to my wagon, and I replaced the lower control arm to make it straight. But, it also bent the sway bar, and i didnt get an extra. So i ended up forcing the sway bar into place, and even tho it looked good from the outside, the car had a horrible pull to the right when i was done. When you get your parts. Get a new sway bar too. -Brian -

TheSubaruJunkie replied to SuperNova's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sounds to me like he cant even find them for $50. So if you need em, i got one in the garage. Let me know via PM. -Brian -
Working on my buddies exo right now. Then we will finish up on my truck. Im going to order my hysteer kit, hopefully have that in before next weekend. Going to spend the weekend up at the rubicon. Probably wont run the entire trail, just camp at the entrance and play around for a couple days. -Brian

New(er) tires on the Toyota
TheSubaruJunkie replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Non-Soob Off Roading
Who is greg? ive been reading all day about Trail-Gear's stuff, and have heard nothing of the sort. I also emailed them about their flat pitman arm and they said it was only for use with the samarai. If greg is running rear springs up front, then he will have problems like that. -Brian -

TheSubaruJunkie replied to SuperNova's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You have to goto Autozone. Ask for them by name. They had to order mine, but i got them in 3 days, and they were $99 a piece. Brand new, not reman. -Brian -
Yeah, okay... you talked me into it! So, im making progress. Figured I would share with some friends here. This is what it looked like the day I bought it: Its a 1986 Toyota SR5 Cab on a 1984 4WD Frame. It has the carburated 22R, solid front and rear axles. 5 speed dual range manual 4WD transmission. 3" lift, and came with 29" Super Swamper TSL/SX. A few wheelin trips, and I realized even tho they are swampers, the tiny 29" (hah... 29" being tiny... woah, reality check) Swampers just weren't going to hang. I was having trouble climbing some rocks and ledges, using more clutch than I'd like to. So I was surfing Pirate4X4 and found a set of used (very used) 33" tires for $50. Couldnt pass up the price, and they have enough tread on them to last at least this season... if not next. I put the truck on its side a couple times. And I got tired of putting the shell back on over and over again, so I removed the shell and kept it off. The front bumper is some smittybuilt piece of crap. Looks like 3" tubing, and the previous owner cut about 6" off each end to keep it from protecting the side of my truck. A co-worker/buddy of mine with a '82 Yota bought a tube bender, and he has a welder and only lives 1/2 a mile from me. He had a section of 2x4 square tube left as scrap steel, so I took 2 sections and welded them together to create the bumper itself. Then it was a matter of bending some tube and comming up with something that looked like it would help protect me on the trail. This is just a 1st step. The next step is to come off the hoop and go over the headlights, then I will follow the fender down to the nerf bars. Hoping to have that taken care of in the next week. Then Modifications in chronological order: 1) 63" Chevy Rear Springs (got em, just waiting to finish the bumper) 2) HySteer Conversion 3) Dual Transfercases (already have the case, just need the kit) 4) uhm... probably something really expensive. -Brian

New(er) tires on the Toyota
TheSubaruJunkie replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Non-Soob Off Roading
I think the marlin kit comes with the pitman arm. I think maybe I will buy tires and/or suspension for the legacy first. Kinda torn between the legacy and the toyota. -Brian
