convert wagon to a brat but with 4 doors
Free Range replied to 78TurboBrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Seen one, at Missoula Auto Salvage, 82 GL wagon, back cut off @ rear doors, plywood rear divider with 12'x18' cheep sliding window, there was a square stock tubing cage to support the r-struts, krylon blue, still had manure in the back, class-less act all the way... Do it... -
those 4eat's suck, my 90 legacy had a trashed torque converter, exact same symptoms as yours, very harsh 1st to 2nd and a little hard 2nd to 3rd, computers don't usually go bad, the hardware is most likly culprit. limp fixes may work for a while, but, yeah Solution: 5mt swap, not too difficult, but the wiring was confusing to get the starter to unlock. there are some decent write-ups around, http://www.legacycentral.org/library/transmission/convert.htm was the most complete, this might just be cheeper than fixing you auto-crap-matic, and I get better mileage now. if you need more info give a shout. If you really need the autospaztic, my advice is to get it fully rebuilt with SOA parts all the way, or just get another ride, btw your mechanic wasn't out of the ballpark with his estimate...

More torque from my ea81T
Free Range replied to EA82Turbo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm taking a guess here: you already have custom headers feeding the turbo? Free flowing beyond the turbo is good, but too large of headers will make the turbo lag more, while hitting harder at high rpm's. For low end grunt on a turbo keep the collection pipes smaller, this is a steal from peter to pay paul situation, you want high end or low end power??? the 3.90 Hi/lo 5spd trans, part time 4wd will give a greater torque curve with locked center diff=doesn't love dry asphalt, my perferred choice in any EA series car the 3.70 hi/lo fulltime 4wd 5 spd will allow you to run on pavement with a selectable center diff lock if you don't already have it, the EA82 Turbocharger is almost a direct bolt on except plumbing a water line. A different turbo, such as VF11, TDO 4... will require modifications to up pipe and exhaust beyond the turbo, not to mention re-plumbing intercooler... IN SHORT: bigger turbo's = more lag and horsepower, same goes for head pipes. ALSO: what RPM do you reach ~8 psi, then where is the peak boost at, and do you have an aftermarket rising rate fuel pressure regulator, air/fuel ratio gauge? sounds like a beast, I'm interested in some exhaust and engine bay pictures -good luck -
Oregon Off-Road Fathers Day Camp Out.....
Free Range replied to mudrat79's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
I'll try to attend, but might have to make it a daytrip(b/c work on fri/sat), will my bald 23.5" tires make the trip, or do I have to make room for 27X8.5X14 MT's? BTW get any sleep yet? -
scearch ea82t problems/hesitation... these motors demand proper maint. AND COOLING so could be lots of stuff, check your error codes first. Connections and grounds are mandatory to check especially for a new motor, grounds on tranny, battery, harness, motor fans... also poss. hotwire fuel pump, clean TPS, check maf & O2 sensor, new fuel filter, new pcv, check all vacume lines(turbo's will run w/o any vac) make sure alternator is good(take to a parts store and test; it can make things funky) so many other things could be at issue, I'm scaring myself here, but these are not too difficult, I'm on my fifth motor and fifth trans in my 4th ea82T in 18 months, but only b/c I wreck and thrash cars with old used parts lt can be done CAT: if you run the car, does the cat get really hot, and motor choke out Does heater make coolant smell in cab? I pull that mileage when I shift at 6000rpm w/ upped fuel and boost(300 miles per tank yesterday) exhaustive list, this is not, but if your car doesn't run after all these issues are addressed then WTF?

Unlike GL's, Legacy rear diffs have solid stubs (same spline count) why not stuff spiders and solid stubs into an old gen case and weld up the spiders...
-
sorry, I checked it, there is an ea 81T turbo, in 84? subaru made a water/oil cooled turbo repair/replacment kit, but an ea82 turbocharger(IHI-5 ?) crossover and downpipe will all interchange Intercooler will keep intake temps down, always good for turbo motor, but not really required until 10+ psi boost
-
When I looked at the car your buying, (your buying my pugs) it already had : ea82 turbo (I think, ask Mudrat), and a D/R 5spd, what you really need to add are: New exhaust 2.5" turbo back (do this first, yours ain't pretty) Limited slip rear diff, or lincolin locker 27X8.5X14 SSR super swampers X5 K&N Air cleaner and adaptor from Home Depot racing dept. manual boost control of some sort+boost gauge Dual core radiator, and twin fans with cuttoff switch Besides these your prolly good to go

Mudrat taught me how to wrench on subaru's, and is very dependable. He has saved me serious headace multiple times from wrecker service, to over the phone transmission swaps, and I've only known the guy 10 months. I definitly trust Mudrats workmanship and honor his friendship. He is a busy guy, e-mail isn't his strongest suit, I'd just call him.

I run autozone rebuilds up front, they are solid, EXCEPT: 2 of the 4 axles never came with any grease in the outer cv boots, I've heard this happens from others as well. Most autozones will honor the warranty if the axle is still together, Junkyard axles in my car currently: 4, two inboard, two outboard

I'm Curious, Who has grenaded the most: 1)axles 2)rear diff stubbs in one day, on one rig???????????????????? For me: #1) I've trashed both fronts and a rear, hillclimbing in my 87t wagon, then I ran out of axles and went home... 2)-None Who holds this claim to subaru abuse/repair fame? Anybody with a lincoln locker has to have beaten me, not to mention those with t-case mods :-\

along the way(updated road trip itenerary)
Free Range replied to MilesFox's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
there is an outside chance I'll be in Missoula around 3/21-3/26, if that happens I'll leave word on the board. Break a leg boys and keep it below 80mph in ol' montucky (interstate speed limit: 75) -
I had a click click click noise going on in the front of my wagon, mudrat said to drive the car for just 2-4 minutes and feel the hubs, and axle joints, the HOT one would be the problem... after I checked every bearing and axle, couldn't find the problem, still the noise, it was better in 4wd, but not solved, checked the front diff, roughly 1/2" of slop, trans grenaded on new years eve, teeth came out of the drain plug...

EA82T high idle 87 Turbowagon
Free Range replied to Hondasucks's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I agree, vaccum related...check all your fittings and watch WOT boost levels could also be your vac advance... My 87 t-wagon does the same thing, but only after I turned the RRFPR up to 45psi, other possibilities in random order: cruse control somehow catching and altering vacume levels? dirty air filter(makes my car idle low), dirty TPS connector(always clean this doohicky)... thats all I can think of off the top of my head, but high idle means quicker boost, so its not all bad -
87 GL-10 t-wagon 236K on the body, bought the shell 6/03' now I can count the ORIGINAL parts on both hands---many scoobies cannibalized, but all in the name of education?,no more like four wheel drift! tough and amazingly possible to fix(thanks mostly to Mudrat and Randy) and PROST to all you folks for helping keep good cars going strong

John(mudrat79) in Eugene, builds a custom strut/spring kit for impreza/legacy/forester, he does this using your struts/coils, or whatever you want... Call him@541-729-8490 E-mail: mudrat79@hotmail.com Here are pic's of a forester w/2" lift: http://usmb.net/gallery/albuo87 Here is a previous thread dealing with spring boosters/lift kits: http://usmb.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8262 The search feature really does work:brolleye:

yeah, that was a little optimistic on my part... I shouldn't even type when I'm that tired. I think the total gain was something like 1.5" on a 94 legacy gt, that is until he ran 5000 miles w mismatched tires and killed his center diff:dead:
-
like I said, just give John in Eugene (mudrat79) a call 541 729 8490, tell him you want the 2" suspension lift kit for you outback(custom modded strut, moves coil pack up, none o' that coil booster crap!) get a quote from him, notice how inexpensive it is. . . Recieve 'new' struts in mail, bolt in, adjust camber, install 27x9.5x15 SSR Super Swampers:brow: (or some meaty mud&snows) THEN:burnout: it sounds simple (except the little camber thingy, which ain't too bad if'n I can remember) and it is simple;) Lifting a FWD: Well it would help clear those pesky ditches and your neighbors cats... but the car is really designed for economy, and in doing a suspension lift you are messing a little with driveline angles, which will inherently result in a less gas mileage, probably not goin to notice decreased axle life on legacy axles though(much stronger than EA series CV's) Side note OUTBACK LIFT FITS A LEGACY you need engine spacers(2?), struts(4), rear trailing arms(2), all suspension and anti-swaybar bushings Gain:100mm? -----go check it out at your local subaru bone yard

here are pics of 2'' suspension lift on a forester... simply bolt in modded struts, adjust camber, done! http://usmb.net/gallery/albuo97

REDLINE 75W90 full snyth goodness, 87' turbo w/NA 5 spd D/R+LSD Redline made my tranny happy, tranny was out of a thrashed offroader, has untold miles (way over 200,000) and was designed for 97hp, not ~140hp, used to shift like crap in and out of third, and into 2nd, went to redline and everything is good! It's worth the extra $$ P.S. synthetics are thinner, so if your tranny leaks already keep the stuff from deep in the ground

Mudrat79, (John in eugene) #541-729-8490, has is constructed a 2" suspension lift for the legacy/impreza/forester, he installed it in a 98' forester, (forester ranger), ther are pic's up on the message board's picture album, in one file or another, apperantly the axles are holding up quite well, give John a call, it'll be MUCH CHEEPER than the same thing from scorpion, BTW he also had plans for a 2" body lift not to mention all sorts of crazy options for the old school rides...

Call up John (Mudrat79) in Eugene:541-729-8490 independent subaru fabricator, mechanic and fanatic, or E-mail PK Davis for an austrailian built lift kit
