  1. Something to remember is that most of the info you will find here comes from US sources.. OZ works on a little different schedule(anyone remember the OZ 1984 EA82 RX?) For the US 85-86 all were carb'd except the turbos. Wagon and sedan used EA82, Hatch and Brat(brumby) used EA81 87- introduced the SPFI, still some carb'd 88(EA82 cars)-No more carbs. all are SPFI, MPFI and turbo.. I really don't know the specs of the EA81 cars too well.. besides you guys in OZ had the brumby until 94(?) ....Also, 88 was the last year for th D/R 5 spd tranny As far as the rest of the trannies go, I don't know what years they made what, exactly.. I do know the Pushbutton Single range 5 spd 4wd in my 87 is originally from an 86. Robs 86 turbowagon also has this tranny in it stock.. so they are not just in the 89+ cars
  2. Yup they will fit.. Exact same wheels I have. As far as the lift goes, there was a guy in seattle recently advertising lift kits on the board, but PK's lifts are the most used and trusted.
  3. I would start by retarding the timing a bit. Having it advanced too far can(will) cause it to ping. The spfi block uses higher compression than the carb block, correct? Timing with no light, Advance timing until it pings under load.. Then retard it little by little until it doesn't ping anymore(under load/acceleration) That should put you somewhere into a happy medium provided all fuel/ignition sytems are functioning properly
  4. You thinking about drivin down brian? Lemme know.. I have an extra room
  5. Hmmm.. got rid of that irritating turbo surge huh?... hmmmm
  6. Hey Marnix, Man, you picked one of the biggest dead spots for subarus in the whole country. I just recently moved to Dallas, TX and I have found 3-4 other people down here. Laredo is about 470 miles from me.. Texas is a big place
  7. Local yard says they're always bad? Thats not been my experience.. pull the one you have and look for a break in the resistor coils. Then pull a couple at the yard and look at them to see if they are broken as well.. I'm sure you will find at least one that is good.. As for the purge control solenoid, I believe that is a dealer only part. Not cheap either.
  8. Your car has a 1.8 EA82 in it. There is someone here thats turbo'd an spfi.. not sure of any of the details, but it isn't common. To put a Turbo motor in, you would need the whole wiring harnes from the dash forward from a turbo car.
  9. True, they do mount the same.. But when I did my 5 spd conversion, and tried to use the longer 2wd starter, the vacuum module on the tranny got in the way and the starter wouldn't mount.. had to dig out my spare, which thankfully was a 4wd starter with the shorter body I know you are doing D/R, wehreas I was only doing the S/R swap, so the longer body starter may fit, as you prbably don't have that vacuum module to deal with(unless you have a diff lock, then you still have to deal owith it)
  10. Theres the generic brake piston tool at auto zone(or wherever) the one I picked up does have the right "ears" for soob front brakes.. just snaps on to a 3/8 inch rachet.. cheap and easy
  11. If, as miles says, the GM tool will work, they are only $2-3 at the parts store.. its nice that everyone has their own special way, but there isn't much of an excuse for not using the right tool if its readily available and cheap. I have one.. I have also done it with needle nosed pliers and all sorts of other ways.. the right tool makes it much easier.
  12. Starter may also be different.. some were, some weren't.. seemed to be a whimsical type of thing.. The standard 2wd starter body is(as I found out the hard way) longer than its 4wd counterpart..
  13. My 88 turbowagon was 2wd with rear disc.. was under the impression that it would fit a 4wd(except the hub) I watched Zap do the rear disc swap on Bob.. took about 30 minutes.. and thats because he broke a bolt and stopped for a beer!
  14. Someone actually posted a spy report of the STi legacy with pics a while back .. was a black wagon looked pretty cool.. Much cooler than the spy pics of the new outback that popped up on the new-gen board last wek
  15. Analog guage seems to be the way to go.. I am going to do this as well.. I don't trust my digiguage.. I have heard that the cheapo walmart guage has the right adapter to plug right in to where the original sending unit goes.. right under the t-stat
  16. Ooops.. Silly me.. either the sig wasn't there, or I didn't see it.. I probably didn't see it The fuel cutoff I believe is supposed to come on when you go over 9 psi.. If you want more boost than that, you have to pull that hose. And as far as your Temp guage goes.. you have old style digidash.. it is probably not the sending unit that is at fualt.. more likely the digidash.. common problem.. the solder in back gets all crusty
  17. Been done.. Unhatched has something like 20 forward gears now..Isn't that right guys? I'll let its owner illuminate.
  18. Someone else will have to get you this answer.. I understand it isn't too hard though. Temp sensor is located on the thermostat neck. Where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine... Does your car have a digidash? Could be more than just the sensor There is a fuel cutoff/overboost protection designed into the car. How you disable it depends on the year(maf type) of your car. In the future, when asking specific questions, you are more likely to get correct answers if you tell us what car it is, or at least put it in your sig so we know what we are answering. I'm sure you have told us before, but there are a lot of people here, and some of our memories aren't so good.
  19. Did you sign the tiltle over to him? Sorry to hear about your troubles.. That some lame sh!t

  21. Slight correction to Brians info.. In my experience, Only if Turbocharged or specially ordered.. My spfi GL-10 had rear drums. Other SPFI GL-10s I pulled parts from also had rear drums
  22. Interesting.. The carb dizzy has vacuum advance, doesn't it? (That may sound like a dumb question, but I don't know a lot about carb'd roos. all of mine have been SPFI or Turbo) If that is the case, I would think you would continue to use the carb dizzy, as the 87 SPFI dizzy has no vac advance.. is crank angle sensor type... As far as Timing goes.. you will just have to experiment. SPFI timing on an 87 is 20btdc. I'm sure that this is in part because of the higher compression. Personally, I would advance it until it pings, then just back it off a touch.. you can put a light on it later to see what the number is
  23. This may sound a little weird, but last time my alternator went out, my tail lights immediately followed. Turned out to be the combination switch that runs the headlights/tail lights/turn signals. you have to remove the steering wheel to replace the combo switch.. But checking it out is where I would start
  24. Is that the one from the university? That one definitely needs to be brought in to the family
  25. Good Call!! I had an exploder before my soob too. My soob Wagon has spent way more time in the woods than my exploder ever did.. only real drawback is that my soob doesn't have leather I also bought my exploder for towing capacity and such.. never did do much towing with it. With the seats folded down, the exploder had a little more room in it than the soob does.. but with the seats up, they come out almost even.. The gas mileage is definitely worth the the trade.. the additional fact that your soob is D/R makes it even more worth it. The price difference is nice.. $37,000 for the exploder.. $100 for the soob.. you do the math and see which one was a better deal
