Mine made power past 7k 7300 is where something let loose. Still haven't looked to see what it was.

aftermarket stereo install?
calebz replied to dragonfire's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Lol, not usually, but in this case, yes -
careful.. It may have been unplugged for a reason. In my 88, the seatbelts used to just freak out occasionally and start dancing. It was kinda creepy.

I had the same problem. Bought an extension at Radio Shack, I think. Was like $8 -

Really need cruise control :(
calebz replied to starkiller's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I hate to be the one to piss on your parade, but if your neuropathy is really that bad, then you should look in to converting to a hand operated throttle and brake. Peripheral neuropathy can and does slow down reaction times when speed and accuracy are needed to control both throttle and brake in accident avoidance maneuvers. Your condition is considered an impairment to driving. If you and your doctors can't get it under control, should you get into an accident, you could be extremely screwed. Without the proper accomodating equipment, even a simple stop for a broken taillight could get you a citation for driving while functionally impaired. -
new to subbies.....just did an engine swap
calebz replied to jmathes's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
New coil couln't hurt. However there are a couple of other things to look at as well. Electrical contacts - or more importantly, grounds. CEL.. you have a check engine light on? you have codes to pull. -
It varies in the US.. the dash tach shows a different redline for auto and manual..

Ea82 wagon gets it in credit card commercial
calebz replied to crazy D's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I haven't seen the commercial, but if it involved any sort of explosion or major physical trauma, they could have had it for free... minus some of the go-fast parts -

All they had to do was ask nicely. They could have used mine in the commercial. -
just lookin for some ideas...
calebz replied to thatgirlsays's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Could have sworn I closed this. -
If you use gaskets that require retorque, the retorque is done after the first time the car reaches operating temperature. (provided that EA81s are like the rest of the Subaru world)

Ground loop. Time to find an FSM and start chasing wires. No fun. -

Where the heck are the grounds?
calebz replied to Phaedras's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Gonna bet that after a year and a half, his grounds have been handled. Besides, this is old gen. No Legacies here. -
Its the one by the knock sensor. Contacts get dirty sometimes, so try cleaning it first. It would definitely cause you to run rich.

child seat anchor for 1987
calebz replied to BlueRidgeSE's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Unfortunately, 87 doesn't have the anchors. none of mine have anyway. My 89 and 90 did though. IIRC, on the 87, if you lift the carpet, you can see 3 spots where the anchors go in later years. -
My EA used to be fast. Now it is stationary.

Make friends with your local exhaust guys. Personally, I am using the stock header with my TD04. For the price of the TWE header I was able to get: A TD04, flange to mount it to the stock uppipe, a custom 2.5 inch turbo back exhaust and a little custom IC piping. Not saying the header is bad.. But its not the only improvement one can make.

Rotate cylinder #1 to bottom dead center.. pull the spark plug.. Fill the clynder with nylon rope. After it is filled, the rope will cause the piston to sieze when you start attempting to undo the crank pully. This will effectively stop the crank from turning, without damaging anything inside.
-
If the heads are still on, the old rope trick will work. If the heads are off, put the flywheel back on and drill a hole in the bellhousing that will line up with the hole in the flywheel. Drop the fattest screwdriver you can fit in the hole ( I have an old one that fits perfectly.. have used it as a flywheel stopper probably 10 times).

The "Dreaded EGR" Question ...
calebz replied to Davalos's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That looks like the correct solenoid to me. the purge solenoid looks just like it, does the same thing and is located within 6 inches or so of that EGR solenoid.
