Rear main and rings seem to be my weak links. Some carbon steel inserts and a bit of overtorquing seems to have solved the HG problem for me.

25 spline front axles.....where?
calebz replied to Numbchux's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have a good pair left over from my 5 lug. Neither made any noise, though one looks a little rough. Boots are in tact and they were trouble free before getting pulled and stored in the garage a year ago or so. -
Is a TD05H 14B turbo to much
calebz replied to iluvdrt's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Never heard that. Can you quote/link a source of comparison? I have swapped from Garrett to Mitsu and vice versa with no problems. I have swapped from IHI to mitsu as well. I currently have a TD04 in the wagon. Lag is about the same as stock, but I also have a higher compression ratio than stock. IMO, a TD05 would be driveable, but not nearly as well suited to these small motors as a VF10,VF11 or TDo4 -
forget the new steering wheel, need a radiator!
calebz replied to starkiller's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Radiators.com ~140 for overnight shipment of a 2 core,metal end tanked beast -
My Blitz has the speed sensor wire. It isn't hooked up. Not really necessary. As long as youo get everything else right and hook up the e-brake kill wire, you will be good to go.

If it is a FT 5 speed and it is not out of an XT6, it is 3.70

Subaru and Kit Car Fans..

This is a cool idea, but your site does solicit directly for funds for your project. We are glad your here, it is always great to have more people doing new things. However it is inappropriate to solicit funds, or link to a site soliciting funds for your personal projects. I am removing the link to your site from the thread. No hard feelings, thats just how we roll here. If you want to talk tech, head into one of the tech forums. Make good use of the search function to build on the knowledge of those that came before you. Good luck with your project. I look forward to seeing its progress. BTW.. Who the hell is Mikie? -
No AWD in 86;) As for head gaskets, I get mine from www.1stsubaruparts.com They were about $50 for the set. OEM gaskets. Bout the best thing for a turbo car IMO.

Absolutely. If I could get my hands on one for a reasonable price, I would go fo it in a heartbeat. They are few though, and they seem to be rising in price.

Step-by-Step Head Removal EA82 Turbo
calebz replied to Pooparu's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Having done this twice, I can tell you it isn't too hard to get the motor out that way, but getting it back in can be a real pain. -
True, But if I wanted reliable, I wouldn't be driving an old subaru;) Besides, I just got done driving a buddy's legacy wagon. Ick.. It has teh slowwwwww:-p I probably won't be going EJ unless a wrx motor falls into my lap for next to nothing. NA EJ22s bore me, and Turbo EJs are $$ Timing belts? I have yet to break one. Gas prices? Meh.. I spend about $20 per month on gas for the subaru. I drive way too much to seriously consider a subaru for my daily driver. New ones are too expensive and old ones are too.. well.. old.

Loyale Painting ideas
calebz replied to NewDriverOlderRide's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Personally, I'm a big fan of good old fashioned white for EA82 cars. -
Don't think I hav actually seen this question before. From what I can tell, the 604 wheels will fit the subaru. No mention of backspacing in anything I saw, but I am guessing it is ~+20 like the 505 wheels. Also, sounds like most of the 604s had the funky lugnut wheels. They had larger studs than the 505, so aftermarket lugnuts of some sort may be required.

another rare car found..
calebz replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Actually, the 4EAT started in 87. There aren't many of them though. -
Well. Good thing I have the spare motor. 3rd gear - 7200rpm - 10psi whats that I see? smoke coming out of the back of the car? hmmm Park.. oil everywhere. Even up in the hood scoop. Everything externally appears to be in tact. 3 miles home took 3 more quarts of oil and the light came on again just as I Pulled into the neighborhood. Haven't looked for the source yet, but I am thinking it is the rear main (brand new). I have a sneaking suspicion one or more of my compression rings bit it and allowed boost into the crank case. Thus blowing the rear main out. I'll update in a week or two when I get enterprising enough to pull the motor and look. I have a low mileage spider motor sitting in the garage. I guess its time to see how an NA spider motor like a TD04:banana:

Yup, all the same.

New to these
calebz replied to gdcpony's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
Moved to new gen.. For suspension, Outback struts and springs will give you a bit of clearance. For go-fast stuff, you could always stuff a turbo motor and have a nice sleeper -
do you see a problem with this??
calebz replied to 7point62fmj's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Nah.. I hauled a motor, cherry picker, engine stand and a bunch of misc parts in my 83 brat. It was about 100 mile round trip. Handled like rump roast but it didn't seem to hurt it. -
New to the Subies/Seattle
calebz replied to ClutchCrusher's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I don't know man.. there aren't too many subarus around seattle. Might have a hard time finding parts;) -
Wait a minute. This is a 9/86 motor? Isn't that late enough to be considered an 87 model year? In my experience, though the plugs between 87 and 88 are different, the bulk of the wiring is the same. Depends all on how enterprising or desperate you are.
