  1. No, a Weber 32/36 won't turn your 4-banger into a 6-banger. But it will wake it up a bit. I'm running one on a stock solid lifter EA-81 in my '86 BRAT, carb is mounted on an EA-82 carb intake. Carb was originally bought and installed on an EA-82, jetted however they do for one of those. Stock Y-pipe dumping into an XT6 mid-pipe with no muffler. She runs down the road pretty good, and gets 28 MPG in warmer weather. Have hit 30-31 a couple times. I would imagine that if you swapped in a beefier cam, SPFI pistons, P&P the heads, maybe even mill them a tad. You could gain some decent power over stock.
  2. Lost the PS front wheel bearing, not completely, but it's toast. Heard some noise Tuesday morning heading to work when I went around a long righthand curve. Thought it was just tire rubbing on the ice in the wheel well. Knocked it out at lunch. Yesterday, same curve, same noise, only some shaking of the steering wheel also. Same this morning, but trip home going opposite way thru curve I got noise and shaking of steering wheel. Rest of trip home, steering felt loose. So, once again the '86 BRAT is parked. I hate to do it, but I'll be driving the '85 until I manage repairs on the '86. Supposed to be some decent weather next few days, so I may manage to not get the '85 covered in road salt.....
  3. Got the same treatment a couple years ago on a forum for the Wife's Sunbird. Flamed big time for owning BRATs. I don't sign-in anymore, but still use the data base there.
  4. quote: Any best methods of flushing the heater core work better than others? end quote: Best method I've found for any heater core is; garden hose thru heater hoses, swap back and forth between the hoses a few times. Make sure any shut-off valves are open.... Along with using; NAPA's, MAC's Radiator Cleanser, it's some good stuff for boiling out "any" closed-loop water system(s). I've used it many times on vehicles and in "other" systems where crud can/will build up. Directions say to leave it in for 20 minutes, but I've ran it for a few days with no ill effects. It will foam if Anti-Freeze is present, but you can get around that by mixing it in a bucket of water, pour it into empty system, fill with straight Anti-Freeze, put cap on quickly, start and run engine, (pumps). I'm not saying it will cure all heater core clog issues, but it has worked 90% of the time I've used it. It won't "eat" the core, just the crud that is clogging it. May take some time in doing so, but it won't harm anything to leave it in there, as long as you take steps to insure it won't freeze if outside temps are in that range. One vehicle I can recall at the moment, I left it in there for 3 weeks before flushing system. Lot's o'crud came out of that one.
  5. I remember; a posting of this BRAT being for sale on E-Bay, buyer posting of his purchase of said BRAT, buyer saying he "donated" it to the Regan Museum. Don't remeber; who it was, it being "that" long ago....... Not sure I go along with the "full restoration" of it either. It's no longer the BRAT he owned, just a "copy" of it. Yes,,, it may very well be "THE BRAT", BUT,,,,, it_is_not_the_same_one!!

  7. I found that to be iritating with the XT6 too.
  8. Agreed.... FOD looks nothing like one would expect to find in an engine, not sure what it was originally. FOD wound up in nieghboring cylinder do to the broken valve being the "intake". FOD got tossed back into intake "after" the valve head broke off, then found it's way into the adjoining cylinder on "it's" next intake stroke. Piece of FOD is seemingly straight piece of metal, maybe squarish of cross-section. Not real sure of origin..... Definetly didn't need to be there... For those who don't know; FOD is Foriegn Object Debris. Leads to Foriegn Object Damage = catastrophic engine failure. As evident by pics... Think of that plane that recently "landed" in the Hudson. Birds are definetly FOD. They do not belong in an engine, there for,,, they are FOD. If it ain't fuel or air,,,, it don't belong in an engines combustion cylinder/chamber.
  9. Just got in from wrenching on it. Found a stone hit was cause of leak, smashed one tube and broke a hole in one other. Easy fix there... Slapped a 2-core EA-82 radiator in it for now. Bailing wire is your friend. Was going to use the new one I have, but it has plastic tanks, so that meant more wiring to be done for cooling fan thermoswitch. To cold out to be messing with that stuff, a whopping *12F. Spent about 2 hours on the Wife's '93 Sunbird trying to find what it's idle issue is, before wrenching on the BRAT. My feet are ice cubes now. I'm done for the day...... It's Miller Time!!!!!
  10. Can't help much with the "no-start" issue, haven't owned a running EA-82 vehicle, so I'm not real familuar with them. The pic of the belt,,,, belt looks to be new. Here's a link to a good "how-to" on the timing belts, http://www.economysuperstar.com/milesfox/subaru/service/timingbelt.htm
  11. No, it didn't get "hot", but it was climbing up that way before reaching the gas station, got over the 3/4 area of the gauge. The heater going from blowing heat to blowing cold air is what got my attention. It was 1* out that morning. Brrr... Don't have another radiator for the EA-81, but I do have a couple EA-82 ones here. I can "fit" one of those in until I can get this one repaired, or order in another. Hoping the snow stays away until I get it fixed as we're relying on Rich's '91 GMC Sonoma ST to get to/from work right now. 4.3 Auto, LSD. Thing will step sideways shifting into 2nd at idle speed, on dry pavement. Makes for fun driving on slippery roads. The ST on the sides has to stand for "Spins Tires".
  12. Seems the 6 year old radiator decided to blow a tube yesterday on the way to work. Luckily, we were close to a gas station, and only 20 minutes from work. Put some pre-mix in, made it to work. Checked it out at break, and it's got a small stream coming from near the tank about half way up. Topped it off after work, made it the 32 miles home. She's parked for a few days now....
  13. Pulling the center of the grille and the radiator, gives you better visual of what you're doing. Not nessecary to do so, and an A/Ced vehicle kinda prohibits doing so.
  14. Glad to hear it's working now.
  15. From what I've read on here, doing a 2.2 swap on this is pretty straight forward, Yes?. I'll be the one helping Jim do the engine swap here in the next month or so.
  16. Welcome to the Board.... You may have to expand your search area for a BRAT. I've owned 5, currently have 3, and only 1 was bought local to me. Others came from Northern Lower Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin. They are out there...
  17. I'd get it, if for no other reasons than to save it, do a fix&sell.
  18. Been long time since I've messed with points...... Check the coil wires for proper connection.. Kinda 'member a few vehicles that had running issues, and someone had replaced coil. Had + - backwards on the coil. Does make a difference.......
  19. Yeah Jim, it's the resistor block that's usually the issue. The coils of the resistor break from age/heat. Only option is to replace the unit.
  20. Did the info I forwarded from Ender help??????
  21. In Michigan, if it don't "resemble" a vehicle, you don't need Title to scrap it. So split it down the middle, cut it in half sideways, and you can haul it over the scales, no questions asked. Sorta glad I own BRAT's in a way. Most every police officer in a 50 mile radius knows who owns them......... Wife drove the '86 a couple weeks ago, got pulled over cause the sherriff knew there was something wrong with the picture he was seeing. IE; wrong person behind the wheel.... Boy, was she POed. But again, she was happy that they were that observant.....
  22. An Anti-freeze leak, spraying on the belt(s) or pulleys will let the belt(s) slip. It is a lubricant of sorts... Pure Anti-Freeze is some slippery stuff.. As said, check all hoses for signs of leakage, 'specially those small hoses around/under the intake manifold. If it does turn out to be the heater supply (off waterpump to metal tube) hose under the altenator, a Gates 28466 hose is what you want to get, trim to fit.... You may want to source yourself another altenator for a spare, just to be on the safe side. Anti-Freeze sprayed into an alt will shorten the life of them. May take some time to go bad, may not. Anti-Freeze plays havock with the lubrication of bearing, no matter what part of an engine those bearings are in..
  23. I remember his posting of that.... Total Bummer. Atleast everyone survived the ordeal. With, Broken Hearts for sure.........
  24. BRAT's,,, GOTTA LOVE THEM...........
