Yeah the early gen legacy trannies weren't that great. As it's been mentioned....not a lot of people can rebuild them properly. I do know of a shop in the north seattle area that does excellent work. He's a friend.....however I'm not sure if anyone is even around the area. Your best bet is probably to try and find a used one with low miles. A big killer with these transmissions is people not changing the fluid regularly. Once they start to go, there's very little you can do to get them back to tip top shape. A valve body rebuild on mine helped for a little while, but towards the end, shifts were sloppy, tranny was slipping, and gas mileage was absolutely horrible.

First I'd find out what code the ECU is spitting out and go from there. You have a link for the 97 ecu I/O page on ravensblade? I can take a look and see if there's anything in addition to the MT/AT pin. I sort of think there is...at least from memory and talking to a few people that did a swap on a newer model impreza.

You may want to ask on nasioc. There may be someone in the texas forum that might want to swap http://forums.nasioc.com/forums

The idle air control valve adjusts the idle and everything. The canister purge valve just deals with emissions, and to be honest, that's what it sounds like the CEL issue is. Mine went a while ago, and the light would stay on...go off.... What I'd suggest is clearing the codes...driving the car again, and if/when the CEL comes on again, check the codes and see what's there.

You may want to check the TPS. The idle switch is built into the TPS. This procedure tells how to set/test the idle switch http://www.main.experiencetherave.com:8080/subaru_manual_scans/FSM_Scans/TPS_testing3.jpg If you test it and it tests ok, or if you readjust it, and the CEL doesn't go away, you may need a new TPS.

Take the belt off the ps pump and turn the pulley by hand. If it doesn't turn smoothly, it's possible there is some bearing damage and replacing the fluid may or may not prolong its life. I had one that was making noise. I replaced the fluid, and was quiet for a little while, but started making noise again, so I just replaced it. It wouldn't turn freely at all. It was toast.
