  1. Lineofbirds, youre crazy or just dont care. Use carb cleaner when spraying it down, if theres a vacuum leak it'll suck in the carb cleaner and make it run diffferent wether it may be smoother or not, tough to say. Gas is a bad idea. My buddies 88 wagon w/ 5s/d/r does the same, really hesitant or misses on acceleration. Idles good besides it sounds like a vacuum leak. I changed the carb, a local mechanic said the old 1 was bad. It helped, but didnt fix the prob. I think it is a bad vacuum leak somewhere or got one backwards? Subarus if it aint one thing its another!!! Keep me posted as I will do the same.
  2. My hatchs trans 3rd gear is toast. My plan is to take my parts wagons 4s/d/r and put it in the hatch. Are the trans the same lenght? I know if I 5s it, I'd have to shorten the driveline; no money for that yet- Gonna do the easy swap into my wagon. Will the mounts and all that line up? The hatch is an 84 4s/d/r, the parts wagon is an 83 4s/d/r both 1800. Any other suggestions or complications you may know about would help me. I've already pulled the motor so asap, thanx Ill update too.
  3. I have went through a foot and a half of snow w/ my 88 wagon AT/4WD. Plowin over the hood. Always give yourself plenty of room to stop and increase your followaung distances, (rocks can crack your window, as well as rear end another car.) I siped all four tires rather than studs, works just as good just dont eat the road up. In E. Wa the roads are bad from them. If you know someone can pull you out I say go for it! Ive went through 3 foot drifts in my hatch, I packed my motor compartment, and wheel wells! I only got stuck twice, by myself snowboardong @ the local mtn and th cats had plowed the parking lot and their tracks froze; then driving over them broke the ice layer sinking my cars rear end , just popped her in 4-lo and backed right out! The other was in my driveway, its a loop the corner always gets hairy. Came home from work/school and it had dumped about 2 feet, I didnt quit make it the first time, but a couple runs and I was through! Subarus are great winter cars!
  4. That is awesome!!! These cars always seem to amaze non-subie fans. Ive done something similiar, crawled a spot that a full size blazer couldn't, and he has four more cylinders than us! Props, your Subie beats mine, but it looks very clean! 83 Wagon, D/R 84 Hatch, D/R 86 Wagon AT; parked Brat;soon to come!!
  5. my hatch and wagon have done this before, just make sure and get a good connect on the batt posts and it works, on the Hatch this time, my ignition wires touched, melting them a bit, just seperated em and drove her home. got to fix it more perm. now. thank you guys , my car seems to do mysterious things, like its messin' with me or something?! 83 Wagon GL 4sp, D/R 167k 84 Hatch GL 4sp, D/R 145k
  6. OK checked it all, took off the batt posts and term. good. checked for broken or loose not connected wires, none. looked at all in line fuses, good. Agh Subarus always seem amaze me in some way or another.! turned key on and left it, batt. has 12+ volts, but acts like no power. sitting there screwing with wires and it just turned on. my ignition wires were loose under the dash! Got r dun! Subarus:-\
  7. Alright, drove 45 miles into town, liven the country life. Stopped, no problems at all, running good. Go to a friends house, still no probs, went to leave and no power, accessories wont even turn, no lights. nothing. got good connects to starter, batt 12.9v, coil, dist., whats wrong checked for continnuity (sp) Subarus, got to love 'em. Learn to cope 'em!?
  8. Miles Fox, dude the Trashwagon site rocks!!! My $200 dollar Wagon is cosmetically changed! Fenders are real rusted, along with the floor board inside, you can pour out a drink with out opening the doors or windows.!@#$$% lol. Need to cut fenders out and get some kind of rack. 83 Wagon 4sp, D/R 167k 84 Hatch 4sp, D/R 145k
  9. did it ever run and idle okay? after replacing the gaskets, seals still wont idle try the choke adjustment, rich-lean? Check the idle. you know the basic stuff. Good luck need any parts I have EA-82 motor parts, trans and other general parts.83 Wagon, 4sp, D/R 167k 84 Hatch 4sp, D/R 145k 86 Wagon AT, parked
  10. Right on dude!! Subarus always seem to amaze other people. I don't know how many times people have given me the thumbs up or the horns! For just mobbing like I usually would. In the winter mostly, soobs just go in the snow. I have even scared friends rallying, this kid in an Exploder was trying tofollow me in the snow, about 8'' or more, hard pack and icy, turned a corner slide into and had all four going out of it, he locked up the brakes and smashed straight into a tree!!! No jokes! 84 Hatch 4sp, D/R 145k 3rd eye
  11. talk to bratsrus1, I am trying to do the same thing with my hatch. He makes a gear box kit or something that bolts right into the old trans, so you keep the driveline and all, though some parts off the five speed would be needed, shifter linkage, etc.
  12. Yeah, Jerry how much is this kit, I also Pm you back and have a question, who is Andy? How long did it take to put this kit in and drive again. What other parts will I need? Like Richierich said, the shifter linkage for the five speed, my linkage on the four speed is broken but, it is in working condition, strange. Redneck engineering!!!lol. My gearing is 3.90, decent, but I do alot of highway driving, also go offroading quite a bit. I don't have a lift yet, but am working on that. Talking with AA, and Mudrat. I have a set of 28x14x7.5 or 8 Super Swampers I plan putting on a pair of pugs, looking for the steel ones!? Any ideas. Any other inbfo would help! THankyou all very much, this is like my home away from home. USMB rules:-\ 83 Wagon 4sp. D/R 170k 84 Hatch 4sp. D/R 145k 86 Wagon AT, 14?k parked-help?
  13. Hey subaru feins, just wanted to make some friends! lol thats sad, but who around E. Washington, N. Idaho wants to meet up and go camping/fishing/4bying? Always up for new and different things. 83 Wagon GL, 4sp, D/R 84 Hatch GL, 4sp, D/R
  14. Has any of you subaru fanatics out there put a 5 speed d/r trans into a hatch? How hard was it if so, what major obstacles were there, I know the driveline might have some issues, but is everything else smooth?! I may just end up doing this conversion.!?
  15. I dug in this weekend, finding that the whole gas fill tube was rusted clear through almost all the way around. just made kind of a temp fix, spliced it with another tube. Git-Er-Done. Everything checks good but the gas gauge? Any ideas there. Thanx.
  16. Was there any modifications to the driveline, I want to put an EA-82 5 speed to my EA-81 motor, in my Hatchback. I have the stock motor and 4 speed trans, D/R in it now, I think my synchros are worn? When down shifting to 3rd gear it kicks out and kind of growls, Ya got to rev it up and feel it grab... lol Thanks for the info.
  17. hey your not the only ones with this problem, I just bought an 83 Wagon, EA-81, D/R manual, When I first start it it has massive oil pressure, the choke kicks in and it runs about 2 grand then shuts down to idle, when I try and rev it or take off it almost stalls. I hAVE CHECKED all vacuum hoses/lines, though I found a weird, don't know what it is that runs into my carb which splits into 3 or 4 other lines. when I go to rev it up it kind a grinds or rattles, then as the idle comes down it quits, any suggestions I would greatly apprecite it, I am always tinkereing on my subarus, so if I find anything new I'll post it. 83 Wagon D/R 166k 84 Hatch D/R 144k lift +tires soon, brush guard, lights! 86 Wagon AT 142k, parked :-\
  18. My 84 Hatch did the same thing, I pulled out into traffic, 2wd just pulled to the left, man I love 4WD in my CAR, saved me more than once. Took my tire n hub off and sure enough stripped. Got one from the local junkyard, put it in and been driving ever since. Only a little bit of noise, when I'd go to take off it would growl, or klank, weirdly, I dont drive too much in 4WD, only off-road. What else would do this, I have also checked my axle nut to make sure its torqued right. I dont have many other ideas for this problem. 83 Wagon EA-81 D/R 166k, ticking away, 84 Hatch EA-81 D/R 144k, counting 86 Wagon EA-82 AT, 142, parked:(
  19. Even cheaper than my first Subi, 83 wagon for 200 bucks!!! It runs great, interiors good, (better then the hatchs') the dash isnt even cracked. I have only found one thing wrong... The gas fill tube leaks when you fill it up. Any suggestions!? Only had it three days, many things to work out though. The motor is strong, it has 166k.
