it is possible to pull the motor/trans, while the car is sitting. My bro and I took an ea82 motor and 5 speed dual range out of a crashed car.:-\ the car was about 150 feet down this enbankment, steep, oh yea there was about 10'' of snow on the ground too. all we did was disconnect everything, lift it out of the bay, (the two of us) and set it ona dolly, one push the other pull. So I got a 5s d/r and good motor for FREE! crashed car was abandoned for more than a year, its up for grabs!

Summer Lift Kit Group Buy
Urabus-84HBDR replied to Shadyirishmen's topic in Products for your Subaru
yes, I want to buy an ea81 lift kit, 4 inch. maybe interested in two. pm or email me at rdh1986@hotmail.com thanks. -
This might save some time and labor. I have a 79 Brat has a ea71 (blown or h.g.) with s/r 4wd. I want to put a good ea81 in it, but want the 5s d/r with it. I have both laying around. If I took an old ea81 4s d/r and had the 5 s d/r kit from bratsrus1 put into it, that would fit and work? If I'm thinkin right. Lets hear what you all think. I'm down to that or... lots of extra work. Take 4 s d/r out of my driving hatch, trade for 5s d/r, put that 4s d/r into the brat and the ea81. thanks already. Well when ya got four of everything you can do things like that. I'm trying to get both to driving condition, motor/trans are my main obj. right now. other stuff will follow. posts and pics soon.

Calling all subie owners in north ID area

yea, I'm up in Newport, WA, on the Id border. Im always looking for subie people to go wheelin' and tinker on the cars/trucks together! I will be free in aboput two weeks to go out exploring. Lets meet up and find some mud. everyone is up for it but I've never seen anyone in the PNW meet up with others. Change is in the air. -
nice work, it looks sweet! is that the bezels for those lights or did you make them? Thinking of doing the single, but their not round on the hatch. I dont like the 4 box lights on it now. right on. monstaru-we got to meet up sometime and exchange some info +parts.

who makes the 5speed swap crosmemeberS
Urabus-84HBDR replied to tailgatewagon's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
so guys, I think I'm into deep. I am double thinking of doing this swap. I have the mounts off both trans. and one is almost just right, how do I slot it, or drill it out? Also the cv shafts need to be switched over to ea82 knuckles, how hard is this? never rebuilt cvs just had warrantys... So if I dont do this, I have to fix my 4s d/r that has some sloppy issues, it comes out of gear when shifting, the pin from linkage to trans. thing. ( dont know what its called) its drilled out and bolted but still loose. so much to do, so little time. thanks all! Subies rule, in E. Wa we just got a pretty good winter storm for March, but we Subaru, were the only ones on the highway, tons of roads were closed. Subie handled it! Later. -
who makes the 5speed swap crosmemeberS
Urabus-84HBDR replied to tailgatewagon's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
yes, I just got the motor/trans. out and have the two trans. sitting next to each other. look really similiar except, the 4wd lever is on the other side, about a 10'' difference between the tail shafts length, and the wiring plug is round instead of square like whats on the 4speed, luckily I cut it out w/5s d/r trans so I'll cut and join so it is the round plug. So how about this... If I take the tail shaft off the 4s, and take the one off of the 5s, swap so that the longer (ea81) tail shaft is on the 5s trans would I need to shorten/lengthen the driveline and put in the carrier bearing? Sorry I always end up writing soo much.. Or take and do the same except take the 5s gear box and 4s tail shaft onto the ea81 trans. so that the motor mounts are good/angled right way. This has me thinking, anyway back to it:cool: -
Manual Tranny Shifter Has The "Leans"
Urabus-84HBDR replied to seattlelegacy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
this has been an ongoing issue with my 84 hatch. I pulled orig. trans. the synchros were shot from 2nd to 3rd. so put 'new0 old trans. from parts car, and it was like that, 'Leans'. It would shift o.k. but, when shifting if you didnt hold/push down (sounds weird) the shifter itself would come out of the pivot point, therefore stuck in gear. So the answer to this problem! putting in 5s d/r, right now, tonight just looking for some pointers now. good luck and thanks all! -
How long have you owned your EA81 / EA82?
Urabus-84HBDR replied to GLCraig's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
it was my very first car. bought it from a friends father in high school. So about 5 years now, I dont think that I could ever part with it, its a part of me! Doing surgery at the hour, pulled motor/trans., looking to put in ea82 d/r! Its like the things are reproducing or something... got a 83 wagon, 79 brat (this weekend), 2 86 wagons, 83 parts wagon (2-3 yrs), 86 parts wagon. Wow, diodnt realize how many Subies I had around!:-\ I will always own a Subaru! -

I'm in the middle of this too. couldnt I just take the member from the car that I'm getting the trans from? btw I'm putting the 5s d/r into my 84 hatch, bolting it up to the ea81, but using the ea82 flywheel, cluth, and pressure plate. the only other Qs? I might have is the axles, If I take the cv's, brakes/rotors, all of that and put it onto the hatch will there be any issues between lenght/spline #'s. or take cv's and take apart to make them fit onto trans. I know ea82 cv's are longer or something, but how hard is it to rebuild cvs? What about the driveline, I dont know if I ACTUALLY need the carrier bearing or just a longer drivelone. Thanks for the input, and I'll be looking/posting for more info! -
Phiz- Im in the midddle of doing that, swap trans/motor from wagon- 5s d/r, and 4s d/r into brat. So if the shafts can be changed from ea82 to ea81, but still be hooked up to the 5s d/r, say in the brat! Driveline might be a factor here. either way the driveline is going to be shortened- for the hatch or brat. anyone else have some input on this, maybe done it already! Thanks guys,

Gan 2 brat - Surging/bucking problem
Urabus-84HBDR replied to Subarutex's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
my wagon was doing the same thing. Probalby water in the gas or sludge, could be the cat. conv. if its plugged up, its happened, I took them out on the sub. -
sweet man. its the short one right, it comes straight out of the firewall and to the carb linkage... how much?
-
lets hear what parts for the hatch you got to sell/trade! You dont happen to have a short throttle cable off the parts hatch, the linkage in on the opposite side so the regular cable is way too long. thanks.

Hatch Drivers' w/lift/tires...
Urabus-84HBDR replied to Urabus-84HBDR's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes!! got the brat home; towed it. This is going to be the one; not the hatch to be lifted. It is in better shape than the brat. Cut fenders, got bumpers, roll bar jump seats! cant wait to get into it. What if any front suspension parts will swap from either ea81-82 wagons? also going to try and find some other type of rear tail lights, maybe toyota or nissan truck lights? anyway..... -

seriously thanks guys! I will definetely be checking out other sites like subarubrats' and SJR lifts, and bratsrus (jerry) has the 5 speed kit for like a hunderd bucks... I am currently pulling my motor, out of the hatch, pulling the motor/trans. out of the ea82 wgn, got some other parts too, any one around here need anything? free, maybe you pick it up... but anyway, I hope to have some pics on here soon. This project is a bit of an experience, so I'll be in touch with you all! Thanks again! burtonsnowman- I am still driving my wagon for now and will most likely keep it, the 86 suffered bad deer collision. Going to tear into that this week. See you at the hill! -
Plans for the 78 BRAT
Urabus-84HBDR replied to 75subie's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
yea man!! gen 1 brats are where its at. I'm also buying a 78, one more week! I would jack it, mod, it, mud it, unless it is STILL stock. The one I am buying is kinda rusted, good floor boards, the full push bar, custom rear bumper. I think I'll put a ea81 and 4/5s d/r, whatever I get first. Have fun with it whatever you do, they are far and between up around here. -
I am ready for the lift, got a 5s d/r:D , 27/8's?x7.5 (its early) on chevy 6 lug steelies, going to drill my hubs, get the rear disc conv. from j/y! I honestly dont have the cash to buy a lift kit so I'm a build one! Any of you Hatch drivers built your own instead of buying the kits from AA, BYB/Oz? I have pretty much all the tools to do the work. If any of you have input on building rather than buying I would appreciate it. Time is probably the factor, with building it.? I have checked most of the FAQs for liftin/tire info but not too detailed. Maybe not looking hard enough. I'll keep posting as I start the transformation. THANK YOU ALL!! USMB RULES!
-
nice. at least you got it home in one peice. I am buying a 78 brat too, about a week or two and she'll be home! I will be towing it also, but Im am going over a pass, nothing too serious though. That or drive an hour one way then hour back the other way to avoid he pass. Think Ill go the pass and coast where I can? wasnt the tire there for cushion if one braked or acceled too fast? maybe not. Ill post more soon...

What would you do with this set-up? I Have an 84 hatch and a 78 Brat. Hatch-ea81 4s d/r, Brat-ea71 4 s/r. I'd Like to have d/r in brat. A. I have a 5s d/r from ea82 wagon, put that in hatch, keep the running ea81 motor in hatch. B. Rebuild ea81 motor from parts car, buy 4s d/r, C. or put running ea81 into brat and buy 4s d/r for it. Take ea82 motor from parts car, take 5s d/r from other parts car, put that into hatch. Want to keep both cars running and driving! What to do so many possibilities!
