I have seen some technical threads here that got my mind realistically pondering. I love my 2wd. It is good for everything but mud, which no doubt is a big subject here. I had a DL 4x4 and won't ever forget it. Upon very long trips on the highway, and knowing a 2wd's power, rpms etc, and the biggest thing reading the manual , I wondered, Has anyone built one of these: a 2wd sedan for the greatest power to weight in any given oem ea82 manufactured by 200+ lbs swteel weight lighter - aas well as tranny simplified without 4wd shafting/gears (that is very big weight, having owned a couple of them, it was easily proven to not only myself to have the rear end missing and a sedan oem 2wd 5spd) the ea82 modified as I have seen on this board: mpfi, heads and turbo, on spfi pistons/ possibly cams. the tranny geared with the 3.454 from an 88 gl-10 turbo (if there is another year with that tall gear, that could be used as well- I am convinced it is the ring and pinion swap so realistically achievable, leaving the 4wd shaft behind.) other odds and ends before hand: air flow modded for entire engine bay, two row radiator, non hacked "little" turbo and quite intercooled. An oil cooler, and possibly the aftermarket ecu stuff. In theory the top end would be incredible, if engine could withstand it.I am confident it would work, except for high comp on turbo and actual stress it could handle.

How do I mount this radio in a loyale?
bgd73 replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I added my experience with this to my website. Those "little big" radios aren't cheap , so I added the extras I did, on top of a normal setup, to hopefully help longevity. One page is for a delco radio swap from gm cars, and the other is for more modern radios, and of course that has many options. http://93loyale.com/rayd0.html I don't know as I am being precise enough to be truly informative. Anything I could add? My motivation is the result of 3 radios in 2 soobs, my third lasting the longest without shared speaker ground. My spejer wire color codes in my 93 couldn't be matched to make sense, and that darn shared ground made it next to impossible to map out. I ran all my own, about 40 feet. -
How do I mount this radio in a loyale?
bgd73 replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That is very nice. The radio I am using is a stubby standard length, so normal bezel depth will be ok... I did read something disturbing: " WHEN PARKED Parking in direct sunlight can produce very high temperatures inside your vehicle.Give the interior a chance to cool down before switching the unit on." Quote from the owners manual. I am keeping that old delco setup handy Question: The bezel depth seems to be an issue for older subes and new radios.. am I just getting lucky with after market stuff or what? Is it normally a problem? I have not encountered it yet. Is it a problem for cars older than loyales? -
good idea for oil cooler or not?
bgd73 replied to subarubuddy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
if tranny cooler is on cool side of radiator (I believe it is). The ambience of oil and anifreeze together sounds like a good idea. The lines that have to run to cooler also are another cooler. I wonder if oil pump can handle the extra distance... -
Hill Climb Overheating?
bgd73 replied to Subaru Jim Maple Ridge's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Does the 180 degree t-stat have a pinhole and a makeshift check valve like oem? I had problems without that little hole burping to a tight air free system. I also learned later on, certain angled hills make the bumper deflect air away, right over the top of the hood, instead of through radiator. Even uphills, it seems, the air knows parallel to sea level Front air dam is very good for this. I even went extreme in boredom , and went right through the bumper with 2 holes http://93loyale.com/front.html http://93loyale.com/fskirt.html I did both of these out of frustration. The 4wd is much better at air flow, my 2wd was bad. Sits low, etc. -

I thought of it, but the 2wd Loyale is on fire with lack of electrical gadgets already. I am guessing the bigger radio will be a pleasant thing to add. The new alternator I put in needs a job to do -
87 Gl Wagon - The short
bgd73 replied to robertwheeler's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If the rear quarters are open, its a good cause for that short. Sonicfrog: I have encountered it first hand with gm. I had a corsica, the last year, with a perfectly cracked firewall (lifetime part). After getting the net and searching, there was a few early years of this problem on the corsica, claimed to be fixed in 95. So..the 96 if it should do it, like mine did, there is nothing to do but accept it. I often wonder why sube hasn't recalled for EGR in the loyale generation, especially 2wd's. My problem with it was nothing shy of deadly. It even went invisible on the electrical within the vicinity, even behind the firewall. If it weren't for the metal in my foot making me supernatural in "feeling" the flying invisibles, I would not have guessed egr... but oh it was. -
How do I mount this radio in a loyale?
bgd73 replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
thanks, I hope it goes well too. I am waiting on a wired harness through snail mail.I wouldn't call it little though. I am wondering if because it is oem it ended up a bit different in the tractor trailer it came from. I am hoping it was an amp this was hooked up to. Incredibly loud.25x4 isn't even little for a 12v car. I am certain 45x4 is max to have real numbers on a 10 amp fuse in a 12 volt system (one radio circuit). 35w is getting close to a light flicker. I have had the rockford fosgates and pyle drivers and even ticketed for noise. Quite ridiculous. the trick to make it work very powerfully was dropping to 2ohm. The 4ohm all in one four channel radio is huge at 35w. -
i bit the bullet and bought another brat
bgd73 replied to 75subie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
that is great price , in good shape. It won't be going lower.... -
ok, to maybe spark this thread a bit... a quote from 2001 in a subaru forum: "...although official statements had it that 1993 is the last year of Loyale's production, wagon 4WD version dragged into 1994,...." I can't find what I want.
-
excellent reply! I am yet again cutting and pasting into my home made "hillbilly sube manual".. thank You. I will post how to utilize this with a direct line guage I want to install.. complete with dimming.the extra clock wire going to battery may go to my new radio, It will help split up the power consumption different than oem. I have run my own already, but if I had known these wires I wouldn't have had to.
-
I have since lost the circuit board for this clock. there is four wires. Anyone know what they do? I can only assume power and ground, what is the other mystery wires?

I saw a 3 wheeled vehicle here local with a vw boxer, not electric. I also had a sube driveshaft delivered to my place by a guy who had a v8 on one! He was going to use the old subaru for something strange, I ended up with a good driveshaft from his changed project. four wheels rule wuth proper suspension in the same weight range, unless really just being unique for reasons my imagination could never be satisfied with. I had a 110 honda 3 wheeler 20 years ago when I was a kid... I am stiull aching from the bizarre handling characteristics that sent me and the trike flying in angles I never want to do again...
-
I went though rubber plugs, passenger side for direct line oil. great spot, and there is even ways to use paths there to hold stuff.
-
I searched for this to, and left a wanted in the nationwide junk yard network.. benn a long time no reply. I just wanted the front valence, and maybe grill. I found I was making what the rx had built for same purpose. I went way beyond it anyway on my own....

How do I mount this radio in a loyale?
bgd73 replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I got one from ebay. Perfect color coded wiring to go with it. Sometimes this net is a lifesaver! I even got a fender for my old sube for 1 dollar. My dad swapped it out of his international, he broke some dainty buttons, but I found a way to make it better than original, with original buttons. There is two tiny fork type pieces holding each and every one of the buttons to suspend and bounce to pressing them. I was sure he mentioned it being big sound for a little radio, so I kept it. Anyone know what 35x4 watt does in a little sube? I really don't want flickering lights. It does mention a 1k ohm resistor where the fuse would go, I bet that is the surge flicker killer. -
Looking sharp. I hope it stops in time and stays there

I have requested this prior, but no answer... My engine has a serial in 6 digits. Is the 7th digit going to make it 1 million something or 2 million? It is a 1993 2wd 07/92 (the last year for one). I inadvertantly posted the serial in the ea81 section misunderstanding the thread.did the 2wd got to 12/92 or did it keep on going through 93?

Update on Buckys Old Electrical Gremlins
bgd73 replied to Bucky92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The electrical really uses the radio for stuff I won't ever attempt to babble again... I found the 2wd's like a good radio even more. I am just putting in my old sube a large watt panasonic, on 4 channels independent ground to the radio only. Lookin forward to a cd playing. Keep 'em running! fix the radio! -
How do I mount this radio in a loyale?
bgd73 replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The above photo is correct. Upon ebay for 8 bucks I got a harness. Upon google search for this radio- Nada, zip zilch, zero. I couldn't believe it. 11/05/99 is on the back of radio, the year 2000 made the same crap, different millenium- completely shadowing the above panasonic.. I am getting to some point here... Don't just let that 130 dollar radio go becuase of a "1999" build. 35x4 may be sending me back to the trusty delco. If I see the headlights flicker just once... Anybody have big radios in the old sube, non-shared ground (custom speaker wiring into normal)? I had an old chevy with a huge radio, I resorted to bigger amps from alternator.... -
How do I mount this radio in a loyale?
bgd73 replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ok. This may be a long shot.... Anybody out there actually have a wiring harness for this style panasonic. I tried to go by a websites color coding, and have doubts about the dots in photo, the rest I am confident with. After seeing price for for harness for this radio, which may need repair. I really want to hack it to get going and verify it is ok. My dad owned it, the wiring in his tractor trailer is there to stay.. with original harness. He never used whole radio, I have no clue if it is worth a dime.Anybody? There is only one other 16pin harness for panasonic, the one I have here has been out the longest. So... i am hoping to get lucky here. -
Water on the inside of the lense? I found a great fix, that needs 24-48 hours to cure for life. And it lets out quite an odor until it is done. I was looking for rtv to do the job,and just knew it wasn't strong enough. They actually gain a heat pressure on the inside! I found some stuff called "plastic weld" at Advance auto. I am sure it is in many places. You don't even have to remove the light lense to attempt this fix. Mix it up in well ventilated area, and go across the top of the lights first..where metal meets the glass lense. The bottom with a small leak, normally doesn't allow water. The top does however. If it still leaks, after going across the top, a Q-tip with stuff mixed will get right in all around it. "A dab'll do ya".It will take 300 degrees and 3500 psi, recomended to bond on the package to metal and glass.I have used it in stressful places as an experiment (a hopeless door seem biding its last days on my car). It not only fixed it, I took some time to paint and keep the old door , as the problem stopped permanently.

How do I mount this radio in a loyale?
bgd73 replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It is in the mounting holes for subaru, in a subaru mount.Never used it, don't know where it came from ... Oh the life of a junk man .I found it in a pile of stuff I have kept. It looks like the bottom part would fit an old equalizer (real thin). I did get an ac delco to fit ,where it wasn't supposed to, this seems easier. I may go through the plastic front with two more long screws,to the real mounts halfway to heater box, and bracket the radio down to the plastic, which can be strengthened with some thin aluminum I have. That will give it 4 mounting points, and the brackets to keep the back end up.The radio did say 50x4 channell and my speakers are already four channel and much larger than oem watts. My dad owned it, did nothing but news, never a cd! so 1999 date is no concern. I even found a site that has replacement parts and wiring hookups cheap. There is also two leads for an amp- maybe squeeze a small one underneath (although I don't need it). For now, like the past 18 months, the old reliable delco is still getting stations 110 miles away.I have never done that with any radio but an airplanes. I give this one a few months, say until the middle of january, before the micronic pansiness shows its true colors I do not have good luck with these little radios with big numbers...
