  1. I had an embarrassing time with that for the very reason you mentioned. One winter self destruction far worse than where I began. I hit one hard pot hole and chunks were falling off for miles... 6 months after banging stuff and grinding . I love chucking rusty fenders and anything replacable... and painting it the way Subaru never would have. I have one fender going on 10years flawlessly.. in Maine daily driven all year round on its second car. Don't hesitate to get a high priced proven paint.. it will prove itself.
  2. The closest I have to a fsm is from here in pdf, I was enthused enough to print it and laminate the pages.(60 bucks!) I also have a chiltons and haynes. I keep an eye out on ebay where I got my other book... but FSM sure seems a rare item. My 93 also has a rradio wiring not found in normal info. I luckily didn't want to use the oem shared ground. The FSM seems all the more in need after that find.
  3. Has this thread been posted? I did something unintentionally with a 350 c.i. and 305 heads. A friend noticed the 8:1 dished pistons had a nearly perfact mate with the smaller chamber of the 305 (better than the 350 with its own heads). Of course we were out for power- but I did learn for the same fuel mileage I could do 150 mph (no joke). I know they are flawed to keep us from having too much. The EA82 is by far the most restricted (ridiculously) engine i have ever encountered. What this guy is doing with grooves must be a help to some- why would he waste his time? what is he marketing? He found some good points with some chemistry babble the combustion chamber is not maximizing combustion. I have learned it personally ,unintentionally, nothing to sell.
  4. I found a truck bedliner with "Nyrachord" stamped in the middle of it, and thought "floor mats". they are of heavy guage, and no doubt designed to take on some chemistry. I instantly noticed under my feet a bit more comfort (I had a metal plate in my foot for 9 years). Not to mention the sense of neutral electrically. The EA82's heads zapping those plugs are not very far from ones feet! (my 2wd is a PSYCHO). This fixed the strange feeling.Given I am unique behind the wheel, it was an idea worth mentioning for everybody. Replacement mats don't have quality in mind. They even have little grippers behind them (bottom) like original mats.here is photo:
  5. Seems common sense. From the pics at his website,I didn't know there were that many sloppy combustion chambers designs ! It looked like most of them left a sloppy dead space on half the piston at tdc. I liked the groove in all of them except for the perfectly hemispherical chamber- no need there for the groove (my guess).
  6. once rusted its lost. get rid of it as much as possible, then re-metal, then any primers work on clean uninfected stuff and paint. I gave up on rust where I live. I see it.. I count on it as lost cause. It can be slowed, but it is gonna creep back out sooner than later.Even sanding to shiny still has the cause in it- to be a bubble in your patient new paint job. I have never one the "repair the rust jobs with sanding" yet...on any car.Unless metal was young and be it clean water and air that killed it.
  7. is it a guess or does the solenoid errors allow ECU full speed ahead? My car runs good. I tried the resistor trick, and now the only other solenoid valve is triggering an error... to hell with both those gadgets Is the one non-egr related doing something potentially important?
  8. I have got a 56ohm resistor for a pc fan. will that work? I would like to know before a bad experiment
  9. You are far enough north to mention some of my probs-- Colder weather climbing in will make it happen on newer oil, or not enough. An oddity I noticed is the disappearing act of .25-.5 after changing oil. I have assumed it to be new filters soaking it in, maybe even changing density defying the appearance of how much filter can hold. My car down less than .5 quart lets me know with mild tod it needs more. 147k is nothing, feel free to work worry free with it. If you can still see through the oil on the dipstick, just keep it full at the mileage you are at between intervals, the oil shouldn't even be that old.Acoording to maintenance 7500 is feasible. I never go that far, but some people do...
  10. the info at cars101.com is wrong this address revealed normal numbers: http://subaru.sonik.us/techspecs.html it is safe to say all turbo ea82 oem are 7.7:1 (?)
  11. that is what I was hoping.I am assuming cars101 is wrong? or there really is yet another odd one.for 1988 listed: 1.8L water cooled turbocharger, 4 cyl OHC; compression 7.1:1; elec engine mgmt; fuel economy (est) 21/25 as quoted from this address: http://www.cars101.com/oldsubaru.html#1988 That leads to another Q. Was there special requests for builds you could work through dealer upon ordering? I did find my odd sube there with 8.7:1, again I am hoping the site is correct.
  12. I went to cars101.com and it helped. It has happened to me twice, the odd duck soob, and there is a third odd duck sitting up the road... First was a 1987 DL. the thumpiest high comp soob with factory numbers of 8.5:1 - never encountered again, even the same models same year and miles to compare to. It also ran air cooled for a summer with no overheats. I haven't seen one do it again. The back end rode like a truck, and would 3 wheel it before it gave in enough to be dynamical. Was it some kind of japanese truck version? the heads had 2 crazy pipes climbing out from underneath into a recycle gadget that always stayed cool and even gave it more power. I haven't seen it again... Second. my present 93 loyale is the last 2wd with the highest compression ever on an ea82 (9.5:1).. it is the only soob I have ever had where thoughts of slowing down occur frequently, and had it in triple digits on the highway mph.I have blown the exhaust off like an old v8 would through the seasons if 10:1 was the compression.the numbers for total sales at cars101 makes it a rare item where I live... and for the world for that matter. the third, also with info found at cars101 is a 1988 mpfi turbo wagon. It is supposedly the lowest compression for a turbo ever by subaru (just one year- and this one was it.) Does anyone have accurate ea82 production/sales info for different models, I am guessing at the three I have owned/interested in . I know odd ones exist, especially with the gl's and strange things you may find oem. I am wondering if they kept playing around with options right to the end of production, and didn't really put advertising public knowledge into it. Cars101 is a great source BTW, I am hoping to get even more specific.thanks for help
  13. If it is ECU, and you like taking things apart, try resistor r1 by burnt appearance. Attacks from many angles like resistor R1 on the ECU board. If it is resistor somehere, it is obviously burnt. 10ohm 2pack from radio shack for a buck, with luck, it should repair strong and last long.
  14. the sitting car killed its own static. check for a rusty coil..?
  15. I ended up with a "stant" brand from advance auto, I went with it due to my remembrance of that name for years and nothing unusually failed on them. The Lubricant in anitfreeze no doubt feeds the longevity, regardless of brand. That little gadget I am sure has a very high quality control before shipping out from thier plants of manufacture- to have a problem once in engine would take some realistic deciphering. My only fail was the "miracle goop" that some folks/ oem used to keep system sealed.
  16. If photo is accurate it is a fit. Twice I have encountered wrong transaxles with a thicker shaft/wrong spline count claiming to be for my 2wd. The 4wd is the correct one, and I don't believe 2wd ever did anything different(ea82).
  17. I bet it is subarus omen- dealing with gm at all, ever. Lack of discipline was first thing I noticed about the newer soobs, just like gm. Then I found out they interacted, after the infamous ea82's were retired and gm had a stake in it. It is like they are in the wild stages of gm's 1960's. Manic out of control heathens with a 15 lb turbo breakin things without a care except "its so powerful" .when is the old man of subaru gonna say "enough kids- time to let the humble true strength of origin back in."
  18. 1 million miles and actually over the road is a "beaming" buzzing bent seen -35 below steel frame of no return I would never have any part of if from around here (and bragging about it anyway)... I have encountered 3. the rails don't make it if hauling max allowed for the years it can be.even if they are straight. In fact I believe its a sudden stroke maker or other bizarre ILL on older drivers (one just happened recently to an owner operator in his million mile classic from local- never to drive again.)This is the very season it starts happening to the old rigs steel is cooling down, changing densities and buzzing the hell out of everything.I would never brag about that number on a rig. A small unibody and engine going that far seems more humanly compatible. I have even heard of this steel hardening event on old steel ships in the cold waters of maine. No one will be operating them again, without the genius of the "invisible stuff" getting cured. Weirdos would call it "a ghost". I used that photo as it was the epiphany that this tiny ea82 after outrunning everything around could easily be compared to tractor trailer maintenance and longevity, right into the conversations of beaming buzzing bodies with vibrations that would require non-oem risk taking geniuses or lucky guesses by backyard mechanics such as myself.electrical anomalies included, which still leave a majority of mechanics scratching thier heads with questions like "How in heck did that do that? what short circuit? Why does your car make me dizzy without an exhaust leak? " or the most famous of all "the ecu has got a light saying you need to fix EGR" <- not a long term soob owner, Ya know what I mean? to go to 300k is quite a feat for any car, congrats. love to see it for your old soob.
  19. I can't seem to pursue this subject enough. here is video of folks documenting a leaf blower stuck into n/a intake on a dyno with before and after results on an inline 4 and the worlds worst engine (4.3 ltr gm).A leaf blower has a chance of getting its own exhaust in its own blower, so it is even more of a surprise. Note all engines tested aren't naturally balanced like a boxer 4. A high comp boxer would be benefiting even more... (my guess) check it out: http://videos.streetfire.net/toprated/1/ab544e3b-5dff-416d-9cfd-a1ad23ca9564.htm
  20. It is a reason to stay motivated about door seals and rust, and all the gaskets.... and keeping things like empty coffee cups out of the car with sugar in the bottom.
  21. This engine (EA82) has a world record. There is not a doubt in my mind. This is a typical photo of a rigs guages. It really put my sube into perspective. At 629,628 miles all original- it has just received its first set of new wheels (bent). Half rpm as a gas ea82, the scale of repairs goes twice as long. It is an incredible comparison, to know how small a subes parts are, and to relate it to a slow thumping diesel tractor trailer.(it also made it more likely to not be in awe of a "little gas engine that can".)
  22. I had just mentioned there is no critters in the morror yet. Here it is (a baby to the giant in the bumper) Now I am certain the electrical is good.... I saw a thread of web in rear view morror and thought it may be in the car with me. I looked into driver side morror and saw a leg......it never lunged into the car at me, as the little guy hung onto to 50's mph dangling off the mirror.
  23. Sorry shawn about last thread going off topic- I am back on track with its intention. Ok, I finally figured it out (possibly bizarre): My camera has a flaw revealing "glow" .The lower photo obviously has it more than the oem.In the real world eyesight there is now indeed a phosphorescent - especially at cloud cover or dusk. My car is now an intimidating beastly glowing animal with "500hp" - all in an innocent paint job. The focus of this on my behalf is spotting a 93 impreza, black and white months ago, doing 60mph on rte1 (where if driving you need to pay attention). I still spotted the glowing impreza from half a mile out parked and for sale. Did they paint imprezas differently? I am assuming so- it definately had this glow, no doubts about it. So if you see my innocent sube sedan kids - don't pull up beside me expecting a drag race to post on streetfire anytime soon.
  24. that is a frustrating sight. the tensions do thier job arguing with teeth on belt that stay with the teeth driven pulleys.. so tensioner is going on useless until the belt finalyy has had enough. That does take quite sime time to get to where the belts in video. I was surprised to find some new belts doing similar, just hanging on to the set distance on metal pulleys over ruling the rubber belts imperfections.Whatever keeps running ya know what I mean
