  1. diff fluid clean and full? could you detect a temperature difference in the hubs if you compared the hubs L vs R? use an infrared remote therm and nad measure after some highway runs. have you tried rocking it up and down? anyway, it too has 170K on it so, it's no spring chicken.
  2. could be bad battery cables/wiring on that age car - even if it's the second set. or ignition switch issue?
  3. It's for when you must use a different sized spare tire, or mix in a tire of a different size or possibly for some special diagnostics. you won't save any gas or otherwise benefit from using FWD under normal circumstances. You're still carryin g the weight and turning all the parts of the AWD system when in FWD mode.
  4. did it rain recently? maybe bad plug wires arcing. I suppose it could be bad gas - did this start after refueling? post a new thread asking for a shop recommendation near your city. You may need a good mechanic to check it out.
  5. well, varying by model and production date, there 'could' be as many as 5 screens. And some of those are in very difficult to reach spots so, 7 hours may be true depending on how the question was asked.
  6. some older soobs have had Crank Pos. Sns be intermittent - usually at temp. knock sensors often crack/go bad on older soobs, no CEL maybe a throttle body cleaning and clean the IACV ? 187K - was the timing belt serviced? maybe slipped timing one tooth.
  7. your call. Our OBW has a filter. I plan not to touch it unless; the transmission case is ever opened, incorrect fluid is ever used, there is a problem that leads me to believe the filter is the cause. don't use just any filter that fits, it's more of a screen inside and is unlike an engine oil filter.
  8. *****She wants me to help her look,***** recipe for disaster. At least tell her she needs to pay for a 3rd party pre-purchase inspection. That should help 'deflect' blame from you when something breaks. Might save your friendship.
  9. OK, I'm confused. IF someone wants a 'project' there are lots of different ways to go. One of the worst is to try to add a turbo to an NA engine. For a small amount of boost, I'd add a supercharger before a turbo. IF there is financing involved, just get a new WRX. Used ones that haven't been reamed-out by a kid are extremely rare and, as you said, financing may be difficult. An often overlooked car is the turbo Forester . less likely to have been abused by a teenager. Very peppy. Swaps of turbo engines/drivetrains from the junkyard into other Subaru models are done but, it definitely is not a trivial project. ECU and wiring harness issues alone are challenging.
  10. no mentin of suggested charges/time I don't think, but if you car falls under the oil screen TSB, there will be more time, and possibly parts, charged. RE 1. 11. hmmm...kinda wondering if that year turbo requires banjo-bolt oil screen inspection. That's gonna add some time to the turbo job..
  12. any pics of this? Is the hole already there it just need to be tapped?
  13. there's something about the impedance in the high voltage side of Soob ignition that makes most of the engines picky about the right combo of plugs and plug wires. many people have deviated from NGK/Denso and regretted it. some other stuff doesn't seem to matter - like cheap knock sensors from ebay.
  14. yeah, I'd like to see a video or step-by-step of how an FB engine is assembled.
  15. I got a Perrin but, I'm not certain if the same one works for a 2.2 . Cobb and Grimmspeed and likely others are around - I think they will work on the 2.2 but an email would be a good idea to confirm. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Perrin-Lightweight-Crank-Pulley-Black-Subaru-EJ25-EJ20-/251575042661?hash=item3a930a8265&vxp=mtr
  16. pretty sure that system should maintain pressure more than 2 minutes. Plus the fact that holding the pedal to floor seems to point to a leaking injector. maybe cycle the key to ON, wait for the FP to run, OFF, wait 2 mins, -ON, -OFF, wait 2 mins, then pull plugs to see which one is wet?
  17. huh - found this in that article - wonder if they're regretting it now? ******"Subaru claims a 28-percent reduction in friction losses within the engine, with the biggest contributors being lighter pistons and connecting rods, as well as a drop in piston-ring tension. "******
  18. I always wonder what the manuals recommend for the same engine in Europe and Asia? does thinner oil have anything to do with the 'lamb chop' rods? (have those been robust so far?)
