>Summary: His AWD on his auto tranny wagon does not function correctly<

which brings me to 2 rather noobish questions

1: Is this a problem that can happen to me? -98 Subaru legacy gt 2.5 gt 5spd-

>If so how can i check? Do a burnout on gravel and have someone observe?

2: I believe my car may have Traction control, however there is not TC light that pops up when doing something "bad" I did attempt to do a burnout dropping it in at 5k and NOTHING! all i did was rocket off (and on gravel i might add)

>If no traction control i may have a loss of power somewhere... Thanks guys!

Automatic transmissions use a complety different AWD system than the manual transmissions.

However, doing 5k rpm clutch dumps will break the manual transmission. Don't. It's an AWD car, it's not meant for burnouts. Go buy a pickup or a camaro if you want to do that.

You don't have traction control. It only came on Fwd subarus in the late 90's, not AWD.

The manual transmissions can have the same type of torque bind issue that the automatics have, but thats when someone overheated the center differential by towing the car usually.

Quit worrying about it, and for christs sake stop doing clutch dumps. It will grenade the tranny.

Thanks for the advice for a spirited driver like me. I do clutch dumps at least once a week. As for the torque bind issue, never had any fears of that thanks to the manual transmission AWD

Yeah, AWD Subarus never came with traction control in that model year. I've confirmed it by doing a 1/4 doughnut on mud with my 1999 Subaru Legacy Outback Limited wagon with the 5-speed manual.

As to the OP don't worry about your trans unless you have something specific. Rotate, properly inflate, and have your tires matching and change your trans oil and you should be fine. If you have issues ask.

Manual trans get torque bind. Those are the ones you can use to make a RWD or FWD Subaru manual trans!

What are you guys referring to with "traction control"? Is that VDC? That only comes in 2001+ H6 models and others later on. No Subaru's prior to 2001 have VDC or other forms of traction control I don't think.

traction control = VDC indeed.

Speaking of which, does anyone know if the WRX STI has a sport-tuned VDC?

They must have had it at some point. If you have the whole spedo-head cluster out there is a place for traction control theres no bulb in it but its there.

It's called AWD.

VDC is even better than mere traction control.

VDC can put all the power to just one wheel, if 3 are on ice and one has traction.

+1..as mentioned DONT do any clutch dumps Subarus in general have a very difficult time transfering power from the trans to spin all 4 wheels which obviously results in many a broken transmission...Not just the WRX either lol... in 98 or 97 rather when perhaps your vehicle was constructed traction control was not available on Subarus. ...You have a pretty decent car there and if the HG's where already done you have an even better car which when well taken care of will last you many many care free miles.....;)

Early 90's model FWD models had traction control

Hell it's in my 1995 Legacy's owners manual..

Look on the bright side, if he keeps doing clutch dumps, someone here can sell him a transmission (even new subaru manual transmissions do not like this).

nipper

And on the dark side: soon a post for a good 97 Subaru, never been abused and all maintenance done, needs clutch and transmission repairs.
