Cleaning out the garage to fit in the next project (70 Datsun roadster) and found the 50# bucket of rust I cut out of her. I had always intended to take a picture of it but then lost it in my garage

Wow. Those do look great. I can't believe this is the same brat you started with... Amazing.

I just have one complaint about the tail end of this build and that is.....There's just not enough pics dammit! ;)

Can't wait to see this one finished!

LOL... I'll be getting the interior buttoned up this weekend so hopefully I'll be able to quell your pic appetite. ;)

I'd be scared to drive this thing... it's just too beautiful!

Funny you should mention that... I have been offered to house it in the show room of the local Subaru Dealer for the winter.  I think I'll be taking them up on it... then I can play come Spring.

Rolled it out so I could spin it around in the garage, while she was out I went through all the boxes and found the last few things I had misplaced (trim and badges).

Ordered the clutch and motor mounts so I plan to get the engine compartment put together this week.

Note... I need to weld in a new exhaust hanger.

The tires came with the BRAT.. I just re-did the wheels and painted the letters with a paint pen. When I re-do my other wheels I'll be buying new tires and will do the same to them

Finally got the engine moved from my shop to the garage and buttoned up.

Have a Weber and front struts ordered and enroute, picked up rear shocks locally... All go on this week along with wiring the third eye and my NOS fog lights and hope to have it completed this weekend or early next week... (I won't hold my breath)

Where did you order your struts from? im having a hard time finding a good place that i can get good struts from for my brat

  • Author

I orderd Gabriel front struts from www.Autoanything.com

I paid $98.00 shipped.  I wanted monroe to match my rears but it appears they have stopped making this model.

If I like these shocks I am temped to order another set for down the road.

Got the rear shocks installed, I ended up re-tapping all the bolt holes for th rear shocks, also installed the new front struts.  Note: if you go with the Gabriel strut you will need to grind the opening on the spring seat a little bit to fit right but they are adjustable (2 adjustment bolts) like the factory ones and seem to be good quality.

Realized last night that the shaft on the transimission was smaller than my new clutch, turns out that my early '85 BRAT has an '84 transmission in it... fortunately I was able to find in locally on a Sunday

Got the engine in as well, working on lines and hooking up the Weber, plan to turn the key this next weekend.

Quick update... Cranked it to get it oiled. Gas tank, exhaust, final wiring this week... hope to put a fork into her this weekend.

Well... couldn't get engine to fire.  Tried everything I could think of (air, gas, spark), messed with it for the better part of a weekend and to top it off there was a lubrication issue.

I pulled the engine, tearing it down , re-hone, new rings and rebuilding to see where I went wrong.

I've built 8+ EJ25 performance motors and get my butt kicked by a naturally aspirated push rod with a 1/4 of the HP LOL.

Oh well, should have it put back together by middle of next week (need to wait for new rings and seals to arrive)... maybe it'll even run this time :)

This thread is awesome! I really need to get busy on mine.

All that awesome work mate, then the final moment of that first turn of the key - only to have it not do what you want it to do most :(

Just read your thread from start to finish.  Very impressive!  I wish I had the skill and patience to do that sort of rust work that you've conquered!

One question:  Did you have the front and rear windows removed for the respray?  I couldn't tell if they were installed or not when it left for the paint job.

Keep up the good work!  After all that I'd be inclined to keep it at stock height - it looks friggin' AWESOME!!

Cheers

Bennie

Thanks, I'm keeping it stock. I had a little fun with a GL10 during this build (lift, pugs etc.) so I got that out of my system.

Left the windows in as I had just had the front replaced (bad timing). I used 1/4" cord on the rubber weather stripping that worked well to pop it up.

I hope you are getting the engine sorted out. After chatting with you on the phone I am still stumped on what you should try next.

I hope you get it running soon!.. I need to find the time to come check it out
