June 28, 200421 yr I have an opporunity to buy a 78 sedan (missing its badges, so I don't know what it actually is) and an 80 GLF with auto. The guy wants $100 for both cars. The body panels appear to be in good condition, but they have both been sitting for years, so all kinds of little creatures have taken up residence in, on and around them. He thinks the GLF has a cracked head, doesn't remember why the 78 got parked. Obviously, neither of them runs. I'll cruise back out there tomorrow and snag some pics. Should I take the cars?
June 28, 200421 yr Grab the VIN # and run it. That'll tell you what it is. But regardless, if you can't salvage double that in parts, something is wrong. Go for it.
June 28, 200421 yr Essentially, $100 is giving them away. I 'd pay it just to get them home and see what I REALLY had! The parts are worth way more than $100, if you have the cars that can use them. Are they restorable? Todd
June 28, 200421 yr Yeah id agree. Even if they never run you could part em out till you had your $100 back and then just do with them as you please. Im sure theres a fair bit on there worth keeping.
June 28, 200421 yr Author The bodies both appear to be in very good condition, although there is a fairly good bit of moss growing on both. The interiors look pretty nasty, but without actually getting into them and looking up close, I couldn't tell you if the interiors are salvageable or not. They have all their glass, but who knows what the seals are like. I'm gonna try and get some pics tomorrow and I'll post them here, so you guys can ogle them, see what you think. Thanks!
June 28, 200421 yr I have learned a long time ago, don't buy stuff just because it is cheap. Buy stuff cuz it has value to you, or just value if you plan on fixing it to sell. People offer cheap cars to me all week long. But a $50 car, that needs interior ($$$ + time) and motor work (parts +time) may end up being more of a project than it is worth. If you want the cars cuz you have always wanted one of them, then that is great. If you want them cuz they are cheap, that might not be as good of a reason. I like Robs advise of putting the $100 into something you already have. I need to heed that advise more often. I have sooo many projects that none of them reach completion. And when they do, I have to sell them so I can work on the other projects.
June 28, 200421 yr I have to agree. One only has 2 hands and 24 hours in a day. (8 is sleeping!) I know I get diluted in my projects and then nothing gets completed. I feel like I'm just treading water! Todd
June 28, 200421 yr my opinion, having parts around all day is invaluable. like when i put the spfi sedan together, i used an intake from one, an dist from another, on an already mix and match long block(carb heads on spfi block). i had enough parts, bolts, nuts at my disposal to try them all out and pick what fits best. my advice is if you have a place to keep them, why the hell not. any subaru with a title is worth putting together for me. bonus points if everything to the car is all there.
June 29, 200421 yr One only has 2 hands and 24 hours in a day. (8 is sleeping!) Todd,is obviously not a parent of small children. I can't BUY 8 hours of sleep....let me know what it's like. Back to the cars.Well,if you can make a runner and you really wanted one of those you'd better pay the $100 since there aren't a lot left to pick from.I'm assuming there's no serious rust like we'd have here on most of them. If you want to see if you can make some dough parting them out well you might,or might not.Personally I'll pay for an uncracked blue dashboard from a late '77 to 79.I'd also pay for several rust free parts like fenders, rounded style rear bumper, lower front skirt, and more. There's a very limited market for 70's Subarus. Please look the cars over, take notes if you can,and let me/us know what's good on the cars.Maybe we'll make it worth your while to part them. If you lift the hood and there's a dual carb set up on one call it mine.
July 2, 200421 yr Author Finally got some pics taken. What the heck is a Subaru FE? Put the pics in my gallery. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=4212
July 2, 200421 yr Finally got some pics taken. What the heck is a Subaru FE? Put the pics in my gallery. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=4212 FE was for "fuel efficiency". It had the higher compression engine and higher ratio 5 speed. It was rated at 50 mpg on the highway. (Moose....that might be your blue dash!!) I say get it! I see tons of good stuff and you would have fun playing with it! How many miles on the FE? I thought cars in the NW didn't rust so bad! Todd
July 2, 200421 yr After seeing the pics I'm changing my offer to $50 tops! They truely are in rough shape. They don't run and are rusty, what's he going to do with them anyway? Is there enough good parts to make one Subie? Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester
July 2, 200421 yr Author Well, I've decided that I'm going to pass on these two, at least for myself. I'd thought it'd be kinda fun to stuff and ea82t and 5-speed into the 78, but I don't think I'll get around to it before the car REALLY starts to fall apart. Having said that, if there's something in there that somebody wants, let me know and I'll see what I can do. If there's enough interest, in them for parts, I may go ahead and buy them so that you guys can get some of the parts you need.
