February 14, 200719 yr Whats up Subaru freaks. I didnt see a thread like this so here it is. Here is a question for every one that has had and or delt with a 5 speed 4WD manual trans from the XT or XT6. I dont care about stuff like clutch failures or throwout bearings going bad, all I want to know is how well your transmission alone has held up to the amount of miles and abuse that you have thrown at it. IE.. Bigger tires, stronger clutches, power adders, gear ratio changes, engine/trans swaps, offroading, road racing etc... Tell me what you have done to the car that would adversly effect the transmission, how many miles you have on the trans or one in the past and how it has weathered your abuse. State whether you have a Selective 4WD or Full time 4WD . Also, If you have had problems how hard was the fix or how expensive? Thank you all
February 14, 200719 yr I have an 86 Turbo w/ Dual range 4WD 5 speed, and its got about 261k on it and it goes in every gear fine, and is only alittle notchey and grinds rarley. from what i know its original
February 14, 200719 yr my 1987 GL Hatch D/R 5 speed got a little notchy on the 1-2 shift (it was fine if you didnt shift fast). The D/R worked fine. The car was retired at 180,000 miles due to frame rot. nipper
February 14, 200719 yr The only 2 Part time dual range transmissons I had crapped out. The first one the ring and pinion gear ate each other up and the second one pops out of 4wd, anyone have an idea why?

February 14, 200719 yr Also, the pops out of 4wd Isue, may be due to Worn / Wear "Selectors" (I don´t Know the translation to English, I Hope you´ll Understand) on the Trans.
February 14, 200719 yr Also, the pops out of 4wd Isue, may be due to Worn / Wear "Selectors" (I don´t Know the translation to English, I Hope you´ll Understand) on the Trans. i think your looking for the word "fork" if you mean the internal part of the tranny that actually engages things. Otherwise you may mean linkage. nipper
February 14, 200719 yr I havent a clue on the mileage of the 5spd D/R in my Hatch but it has to be well over 100K. It was transplanted from something else before I got it. But its mated to a Nissan T-Case and I havent had any problems with it on or off-road yet.
February 14, 200719 yr I've got 221k on my hi/lo/2wd 5 speed right now. Had a previous one that had 225k on it. No problems with the tranny on either one. Cars were both stock, but I did take them out wheeling, and I drive pretty aggressively offroad and in the snow (drive like a grandma in town though, according to my firends ). The EA81 4 speed dual range trannies I've had 3rd gear get very grindy on two of them around 220k. I'm putting a 5 speed dual range into my EA81 car, and putting a diesel engine with at least 130ftlbs torque in front of it, and I don't have any qualms about doing that -- I figure something else will break first. Remember, the low range on the dual range trannies is accomplished in the input shaft, so most of the transmission is used to receiving 159% the torque input of the stock engine already -- it's alot beefier than you'd expect a tranny for that small of an engine to have.
February 14, 200719 yr I've put about 20k miles on my 5 speed EA81T swap. Lots of clutch drops and hard shifting. First gear is hard to get into sometimes and 2nd is hard to get into when the trans is cold.
February 14, 200719 yr Pushbutton 4wd: 153k, had a bit of bearing grumble in neutral. D/R slective: 95k, ripped the teeth off of something in there, No movement forward, reverse, any gear, 4wd hi, lo, 2wd. took the access cover off the top, could see the teeth were chewed, pieces everywhere inside. I was romping on it fishtailing on a dirt road, shifted 2nd, and that was the end of it. It was after a long month of good burnouts in RWD.
February 15, 200719 yr It's easy, break a front axel doing burnouts, remove the pieces, put it in 4wd, and you have RWD.
