I have some weird issues with the passenger side window.

 

From the drivers side "master" switch I cannot get the window to raise... it will lower the window still.

 

From the passenger side switch, the window will lower, but often times will not raise when my passengers use the switch. However, everytime i've been able to raise the window up by reaching across from the drivers side and hitting the passenger side switch.

 

Ontop of all this, the entire system just barely crawls along when I do finally get the switchs to work.

 

So... my question is: Where do I start? Is it possible to disassemble the switches and clean them?

If your ok working with very small parts, then take the switches apart and clean them. Most times its the plugs themselfs that are the problem. Pull the door panels off and disc the plugs and clean the contacts. Check the grease on the slides and if they are looking real dry, use some good moly grease on them. If they still dont operate smoothly, you will need to remove the motors and take it apart and clean the armature/innards.

as posted above, and search for posts by loyale 2.7 turbo that say window, he had a decent write up on how to access and clean or replace the power window relay somewhere. the power window relay is underneath the passenger seat, usually the switches or the relay are to blame for problems like this.. switches for non functioning, relay for slow going.

Excellent, thanks for the link to that write up. I'll give it a go and see if it works!

the switch disassembly entails cleaning the small copper contacts with some emery paper or such, and reapplying a small amount of dielectric grease. MTFBWY!

Clean them up with some electrick contact cleaner!!! DO NOT USE BRAKE CLEAN... well i guess you could but, contact cleaner workes better

 

Tip; for the most part, electric contact cleaner is isopropyl alchohol!!! thats what I used along with a million Q-tips. and i put the switch backtogether wrong the first time, I had a huge load when i turned the lock switch off... Glad I fixed that!

Could always just get a new switch at the PAP :-\

 

you might also check for a good 12 volts to the switch to make sure you're getting all your wheaties to the window motor.

last summer the drivers control pass button broke and got jamed in the up posisition, it started getting hot:eek: ..replaced it and i can only make the pass side go down from the drivers control(pass switch still works fine)..

 

the catch..ive tried 4 different master switches and still can not make that window go back up from the driver control. :mad:

I've had problems with my power window functionality on all 4 EA82s I've owned. and all were solved by cleaning the contacts in the switches. I just use soap, water, and a small screwdriver....

sounds to me like theres a wire thats broken between the driver window switch, and the window relay under the passenger seat.

Your lucky you didnt get a carbaque!!! When things get hot its not good, unless the heavy comes along wit it:headbang:

Checked out the relay tonight... It looked fairly good.

The power wires have a little bit of discoloration (as you can see above) but were still pliable and tested fine at full voltage. So, do I leave good enough alone? or should I put in a new relay... I'm tempted not to at this point...

 

I will now turn my attention to the door switchs. Unfortunatlly this will require a bit more work pulling off my custom door panels and such.

Good pictures. Those connections are showing signs of a weak connection. I would replace the relay with a new one. I would try to repair the connection that has the two white wires going it also. Repairing these may not fix your current trouble but they will cause trouble later on.

Ran into this same problem a few months back. The power windows and auto seatbelts became very intermittent and finally stopped working all together.

 

I had to dig into the relays and grounds located under the passenger's seat. All of the connections into the relays looked good, but I cleaned, rewired and slathered them in fresh dielectric grease just for peace of mind. Also, the ground (grounds? can't remember if there was more than one...) near the relays was in HORRIBLE condition. Corrosion had made its way about 2"-3" up the wiring. So, I cut out all the bad wiring and ran new stuff to the freshly sanded and dielectric'd ground location. Buttoned it all back up and the windows and belts went back to functionality!:headbang:

 

In short, don't trust that the wiring and connections are still good. It's too easy to just replace it all with known-good stuff while you're in there.

Ok. I may as well replace the stuff, i even already have the relay. Do you think its safe to bypass the breaker and fuse the connection instead?

You can do that but I don't recommend it. If the fuse blows for some reason it will disable all the windows until the fuse is replaced. The breaker will just reset itself automatically after it has tripped, even if the problem is still there. I doubt there is a problem with the breaker so I think you should leave it in place. If there is a problem with it get another replacement breaker.

Swap it to manual windows and voila, windows are fixed:-p

 

I might have a spare switch somewhere since its one of those "needle in a haystack" parts for coupes, like the tailights...

Thanks. I found 1 drivers side switch and 2 passenger side switches in my garage. Today at work I cleaned all of them... However they are all different colors than the ones in my car, so I'll have to do some swapping when I get around to getting the door panels off.
