I am considering moving out west......and I do love subaru's.........I am interested in learning which location is the subaru mecca? I adore working on them and I would enjoy being close to parts and fellow people that drive them. particularly the ea81's 4x4's......thanks! any advice would be nice.........I work in forensics/science labs so an area of gainful employment in that sector would be necessary too! Seattle ... period. Also, as an east coaster, Seattle will prolly be the least cultural shock. In fact when we moved we were told "you won't be a local until you own a subaru" I have three myself and there are prob ten more just on my street(and it's a small street). Most here are impz obws and loyales.Others are somewhat rare(the oldest ru i've seen here was an 82 so not good for oldies) but tons of others . I'd at least take a trip here first before deciding, I've heard seatle has many(as mtsmiths said). I've never been there but i'd be shocked if they had more than us. The other unique thing (about the north puget sound area anyway) is the accessibility of logging roads, department of natural resources roads, and electric company trails, as well as dedicated "off road parks" such as Walker Valley- a local off-road mecca. Check out some of the threads in the "Subaru MotorSports- Trails, News, Runs and Events" section of USMB, the majority of them are based here in the PNW! We have suba only garages and pick and pull in Carson city(25 min drive) has a huge suba section.Same goes for our garages.We also have nice trails and beautiful scenery(It's Lake Tahoe for crying out load).But we also have sky high prices on everything.If I were the thread poster I'd look at all three towns before moving. In fact I noticed a distinct lack of them according to the "Portland, OR" calibration of my finely tuned Subaru radar. Not that they didn't exist, but I only saw a measly one or two EA81's, and a handful of EA82's. More legacy's and outbacks but not every third car as it is here. Lots of SUV's and a disturbing number of vehicles that were obviously not locals due to their "2WDness" Seattle and Portland are probably the two Subaru "mecca's". Both have way too many to even try and compare the two. I do tend to see more EA series in Seattle when I'm up there, but it's really a toss up and depends on what neighborhood you are in, and other factors. Both have Subaru only shops, and both have tons and tons of Subaru's in the yards. I have 6 yards I hit - all of them have regularly have DOZENS of EA82's alone. Usually a handful of EA81's and a couple handfuls of EJ's. That's at EACH yard. It's hard to describe it to people that have never been here. They are so plentiful that they keep following me home. There's a high concentration of Subes here in Tahoe also, but not like I've seen in Seattle or Denver (although the most-registered brand in the Tahoe basin is Subaru), simply because those are big cities. Tahoes old ru selection does suck.Even gl's are somewhat rare here.Due to rust issues I think.However if you drive to local areas of Tahoe(not tourist areas).you will see many newer ru's.It also depends on weather and the area of Tahoe, the west and north cities don't have many ru's.But in South lake there everywhere especily in snow storms like we are having now.7 out of 10 cars on the road now are ru's.Idk where Rick was in Tahoe,but areas like the casinos are tourist areas.Thats why you see so many 2wds.No local in his/her right mind would drive a 2wd in winter here. There was a junkyard off Sante Fe and Oxford? i went to about every 2 weeks for 2 years, and every visit about 15-20 subies, mostly 91-94 legacy era (10 or so each visit) plus 5-12 olders There were about 8 Subie only shops in Denver alone I know of. I've seen one ea81 up there and less than five ea82's. Puget Sound is definately where it's at, although Portland may very well be too - i've never stayed there for more than just passing through. There are many other telltales, too. You may have spotted me, I'm in the blue EA81 wagon..brush guard, ski rack, multicolored hood (NO DOG)..and I spend a fair amount of time down in South Shore. edrach Posted January 21, 2008 Share Posted January 21, 2008 I moved out here in 1988 from Wilmington, DE and grew up in northern NJ. I had nothing against NJ and knew the area better than most (my wife and I were active car rallyists until we moved to Wilmington; then we cut back on our activities). Only thing I miss about the east coast is friends who I've known for 30+ years. This area (Seattle) has everything you could want within a 2 hour drive in terms of land or scenery. Seattle has an active bio-medical industry which will increase in the next few years due to Paul Allen's development of the Lake Union area. So you shouldn't have too much trouble finding work. Salaries might be lower than back east (locals tend not to move just for a salary increase) but that's offset by living in a great area. Housing, however, can be pricey. Commuting can be a chore, but our local traffic is nothing compared to what I remember in north Jersey and NYC. Weather is generally mild around the Puget Sound. Winters are not nearly as cold as I remember in NJ and the summers don't get as hot. The only thing is you need to be able to put up with the grey and the drizzle for 6 months of the year. If that depresses you, you might consider staying back east. Take a vacation out here and get to know the area before you make the "great leap." Just my 2 bucks Now that is very true about the dogs.I take my golden retriver in my old gl.because my outback has leather and they would poke holes.Another way too tell is missing hubcaps, broken grilles,keep tahoe blue or snow board stikers covering the entire back windows and (no offense)multi colors.Btw I think I have seen your ru before Zero. We use them to blue.But locals (at least anyone I know) dont drive around with them while not on a trip.So you are right we do use them but mosrly when going somewhere.we don't drive around with them all the time. As for the original topic,I would say seatle IS the best place in the us for older ru's.Tahoe has alot but mostly 95 or newer.And it's hard to find a nice gl/loyale without it needing alot of work.
