January 19, 201214 yr changed the alternator for the 3rd time in the last 4 days.1st one got noisy in the bearing in the cold. So i removed it the past weekend when it was warm and put one on from my shelf. the other day it then drove it 8 miles to get beer. Getting back into the car, noticed turned over slower than normal. Proceed to drive back home with my beer. snow was blowing, wipers were a little slow about 5 miles from home, radio pops on and off. turn off headlights and the fan.... i know this, been there done it, oh can i make it. starts loosing power on the hill, turn off the rear defrost, power comes back to make the hill. only 3.75 miles to go. Windchill is like -5. car does make it back to town, i drop my friend off, and then, it is dead.... good thing he lives 2 blocks away. I jog back home. grab a spare battery and my other car, drive the battery back. warm up at friends house, then swap battery, friend follows me back home, park car. today, i put in the other spare alternator i had on the shelf. pulled out the one that didn't charge and labeled it with sharpie... charged the battery i drained and it is back in, will see. still have to mark the one that charged as "noisy bearing". Also went with my dad to look at a 06 outback advertised as 3988 price on Monday. Yesterday was blizzard and interstate closed to DM where the car was, so we went today for mom to look at it. They drove it home today. they joined the high mileage club, 290k miles on it. I'm rather saddened to see that nowhere in this crisis breakdown were the words "Drank beer" after the words "get beer"
January 19, 201214 yr ^ that was enough for that day. but not to worry, am doing that now, cheers beers. it is chitty beer cause i am broke.

January 19, 201214 yr I got five rims for $40 to put snow tires on. I also added coolant a day or two ago and, while I was watching the level remain steady and not bubbling and getting a big smile on my face...a gray 'bubble' of sorts came up the radiator neck and I went from happy green coolant to weird gray coolant in a split second. Then I was sad. I will do compression tests and whatever else I can think of over the weekend to figure out if it's a head gasket (which I did just four months ago) or just some build-up broke loose.
January 19, 201214 yr Compression test won't tell you anything about the headgasket. See if you get another bubble, if it smells like exhaust. Or just do an exhaust in coolant test.
January 19, 201214 yr i got a new battery for my 89 GL. Than used the 89 to snatch my buddys Bronco 2 out of a mud hole.
January 20, 201214 yr Tried my running Brat's battery in my gen 2 and gen 1 Brat.. Managed to get hazards out of the gen 2, and wipers out of the gen 1. Least some wiring is still hooked up somewhere

January 20, 201214 yr Umm when we wired in the twelve volt outlet we did on off the igntion switch and now when its on accs the parking lights come on even though the switch is off..so strange that is sign of bad voltage regulator in the alternator. been there done that, the wipers would come on even though the switch for them was off too.
January 20, 201214 yr well i've been thinking about getting a higher amp alt cuz i have atleast a 80 amps when i got everything going in my car and idk how much the stock alt puts out
January 20, 201214 yr I will have that after I do the EJ swap! Can't wait. Today I put the brown mats into my GL from the impreza. I also sawzalled the 1999 impreza firewall and pulled the entire A/C system, intact, without discharging it. That was fun. My nickname should be sawzal.

Sounds fun but completely impractical. Are you going to sawzall another car to install it into? Or drive the sawzalled one without a firewall? Either way sounds like a fun adventure, I'm just curious what the purpose was!
January 20, 201214 yr Compression test won't tell you anything about the headgasket. See if you get another bubble, if it smells like exhaust. Or just do an exhaust in coolant test. I haven't seen another bubble, but I discovered that I'm leaking coolant externally. Bottom of both head gaskets look dry, can't see the water pump. Doesn't appear to be from the top anywhere, but I can't be sure without some more prying. I was thinking a hydrocarbon test on the coolant, but I think I'll start with the poorman's test first. Draw some fluid into a clear container and see if anything separates out, and go from there. If it's particles, they should settle; oil may or may not separate depending on the mixture and other chemicals (will oil remain suspended in coolant?).
January 20, 201214 yr Pulled the LSD out of the XT6 and put it in the PandaWagon for more traction. Yesterday, I picked up a Legacy cruise control for the PandaWagon, and today, I worked on stripping out the unwanted wiring and labeling which wire goes where.
January 20, 201214 yr The switch had just been left on in the car, no wiring problem for the wipers.. incidentally, someone mind posting the fuse order top to bottom? Mine has no cover and is missing most of the fuses.. Going to have a go at hot wiring it to see if it will turn over with a bit of gas down the carb.. the ignition is entirely missing along with the steering column cover, among other things. Heck of a project, but I cant let her rust or crush. *nevermind, found a link to the fuse list Edited January 20, 201214 yr by hanyou
January 20, 201214 yr What the h*ll did you do that for? Sounds fun but completely impractical. Are you going to sawzall another car to install it into? Or drive the sawzalled one without a firewall? Either way sounds like a fun adventure, I'm just curious what the purpose was! no need to get all fired up on my account. I'm sure there's a good reason to bust out the sawzal. This rolled car is already completely stripped. I'm much more responsable than many people and am not going to vent the refrigerant into the atmosphere. That should never be an option. This rolled parts car was in no condition to move to a mechanic to get the a/c evacuated and refrigerant and oil recycled. Now I can just bring them the closed system without the vehicle, then disassemble the components and sell them. Any other ideas? I guess we could have just torched it, but that would have been completely impractical. Edited January 20, 201214 yr by kanurys
January 20, 201214 yr Ah, that makes sense. I'm not mad (actually agree on the better than venting). I was just confused as to why you would go to all the work to get an AC system out that you couldn't use--makes sense if you're taking it in to a shop to have it vented, though, then install it into another car.
January 20, 201214 yr 88 GL Wagon. Backed into co-worker, broke tail light, replaced tail light (thanks jemmy3!) Replaced exhaust gaskets, noticed my clock stopped working. Clock mysteriously starts working again several weeks later.

Clock mysteriously starts working again several weeks later. That sounds like a typical EA82 clock. After baking in the sun all these years, they can get a bit flaky.
January 21, 201214 yr Washed and detailed my 87 gl-10 got some p.o filth out of it put a few random trim pieces back in place. tomorrow she's getting new fenders bumper valence corner lights hood hatch and grill off my other wagon to undo a recent mishap in the burger king parking lot... Wasn't even my fault. But on the up side it will be completely blue again the shades are a lil off but Oh well On a side note why does it always feel like a confession when I post here? Hello my name is Adam and I'm an addict. Lol
January 21, 201214 yr Got the Brat timing set by a mechanic who, along with his son, have at least 6 EA81s.. Not that I can't or won't set timing, but wanted to watch the full procedure specific to the engine, loads, common sense etc. and worth the 6 bucks. At least now I have a 0 point reference for future foulups. Weird timing mark from PO, but My 'by the ear' distributor timing wasn't that far off. They used to do that, 'tune' a car. harmonics and all. And 1K engine rebuilds..Took awhile to get there, admittedly. Now can warm up the car without propping the pedal up +250rpm. (not safe. do not do.) Vaccum advance is working, I had compared it to a spare rebuilt and thought it was functional, or both were broken. End result: unnecessary new rebuilt distributor, to be stored for when I actually need it. The replacement window seal is holding back the outside fine. I cannot underrecomend sealing your leaks properly. Or buy sandpaper sheets and patch away in 10 years. Now to figure out how to get the chrome back in.
January 22, 201214 yr Took the PandaWagon to a RallyCross in Tucson. Had a blast! Where those subies stock???...I'd love to do something like this in my brat but its all stock and idk how id handle doing something like this
January 22, 201214 yr Where those subies stock???...I'd love to do something like this in my brat but its all stock and idk how id handle doing something like this Some were showroom stock, others were full blown rally cars. I swapped to a shorter tire on the PandaWagon, my brother put snow tires on his SVX, one sister ran with max air pressure, and the other sis ran with nothing changed. That's whats great about it, anybody can participate. If it's safe to drive on the street, it can go on a rallycross. Edited January 22, 201214 yr by subynut
