  1. Start with basics. Unplug, clean & re-connect your engine harness connectors a few times to make sure they are making good contact. 5V sensors can't have any resistance lowering signal voltages to ECM. Get undet the dash & make sure ECM connectors are good. Especially check that white translucent connector to left of ECM with all the shielded wires in it. That's your sensor nexus to ECM. Check all your chassis & engine grounds. Eliminate any poor electrical connections before you start swapping out MAFs, etc because I've been a victim of that myself. Search for bucking, stalling problem thread. Poor sensor connections can seem like failing sensors so any weak link in harness chain can cause a problem.

  2. 700 rpm + / - 100 rpm. According to tuneup decal under my 87 5MT D/R GL hood. So 650 Rs is OK.

  3. The IAC is a cylindrical thing on the front of the throttle body. A hose ells out of the air boot, goes to the right, turns 90 degrees down onto it. Screws.hold the IAC valve to the throttle body. It is weird that it was idling high before, and now is more normal. I don't recall the spec for idle with a stick shift.

  4. Hi Tom. Thanks for posting your review icarsoft scanner. I have the autel ml629. It read the srs code on my 07 Legacy. Autel tech support said the ml629 is the global scan tool. They suggested getting the al629 which is the american version and easier to update. Will get the al629 today and will be sending the ml629 back to Amazon. Amazon already refunded my account for the ml629. They said I can keep both scanners for 30 day and keep which ever one works for me. Autel wants me to send in the registration # on the al629 just to make sure it the correct American model. They said there is a Mexican al629 which would have the same potential problems as the global ml629.

  5. Two things that come immediately to mind. Something in the rotating assembly is binding up causing a lot of drag, which may be what broke your timing belt in the first place. (Idler, tensioner, or possibly oil pump) -or- One of your belts could be off a tooth. It's easy to do if you've never done them before. Recheck all the marks and make sure they are dead on. That doesn't account for the belt breaking, but would account for the drivability issues. Good luck. Dan

  6. I've been running EA82s since 1988. Not once has replacing a timing belt changed the timing enough to matter at all. The idle screw is the last thing to touch. Never had to turn one of those either. Something else is wrong. Vacuum leak. IAC valve. Bad wire or connection. CTS. Does the CTS you have match the specs for resistance vs temperature of an OEM one?

  8. Clockwise one full turn looking from grill end at the engine. Running engine rotates clockwise looking from grill so tension on belt is from crank pulley to bottom of oil pump across idler to cam sprocket. Drivers side belt has slack top - tension bottom.   9. I don't really have any good engine bay pics yet, I still have a few hoses left over from the Weber swap that I need to take care of, and clean everything in there up, then I'll get some good shots of it. It's a lot easier to cold start now with the MSD installed. I used to have to crank it for 10 seconds, now it turns over almost instantly. I'm not sure how much it really helped beyond that. I had issues with misfiring under load and I think the MSD helped a little there, but the Weber made the biggest difference there. Cleaning and rebuilding the stock carb probably would have helped a lot too, but I decided to just go for the Weber.

  11. I would go with an aftermarket hitch: Hidden-Hitch, Curt or something similar. The Class I hitch and the Class II hitch both use a 1.25" fitting. The Class I is slightly cheaper to buy, but only by a few dollars. I have always bought the Class II as it is more substantial than the Class I. Both are designed with the same attachment points to the underside of the car. But, as others have said, it is usually the vehicle's tow rating that governs. Installing an aftermarket hitch is no big deal, and you can either do it yourself, or get a shop to do it. Either way, it will be cheaper than getting a Subaru hitch installed at a Subaru dealership.

  12. I tow a 17 footer and have been in quite a few different environments. 1. They handle it just fine for moving purposes. They're not a dedicated tow vehicle but you're not towing it all the time no big deal IMO. I have a full sized truck and dislike driving it unless necessary. Truck gets 15mpg while towing, Subaru's get around 12 mpg. 2. Cooling system is the main limitation for Subaru's. I haven't towed with a 2017 but this has been true across multiple subaru plaforms for decades and the 2017 isn't enormously different in terms of cooling layout, design, size, and capacity. Seen it on many models of Subaru's - high temps + steep grades + heavy enough load - the car will run hot.
