So the car was mangled so bad I didnt even recognise it was a subaru the first time I walked past it. Once I realized what it was I HAD to have it. $230 Later... EJ25 DOHC that came from a 99 Outback with only... 68K on it!!! I'm thinkin 165 HP in my 84 brat?? -Mike

Go with the Wolf Enterprises axles (MWE) You wont be sorry at all!!! I have 2 sets of his axles and they are the best axles I have ever bought. When you send them he talks to you over the phone, and explains exactly what he's replacing with new OEM parts, or aftermarket, or machining, etc. in the end you pay roughly an extra $70 for a pair of axles including shipping vs. buying a set at the local auto parts store. Getting the axles for the gen 1's is getting real hard, but for him its no problem. A++ for MWE (just my 2 cents) -Mike

Justy Exaust, Tubular Header
RenaissanceMan replied to Quidam's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The fuel injected Justy came with the most bad @$$ cast manifold I have ever seen. I too though about making a custom header for it, but the fuel injection stock manifold couldent have asked for anything more other than maybe cleaning up some of the casting edges. An air hammer will do wonders on that cat that it bolts up to though... In all honesty I tried with that engine. The Delta Camshaft was somewhat of a disappointment. I did some porting work on the head. Either put on a turbo or get a different car is what I concluded. -
I found this set off of a Mazda. 4x100 pattern is easy. The hard part is finding a set of rims that have a large enough center hole. almost every wheel out there has 2.125" diameter, and because of the stupid hub on the justy you need 2.25" diameter. So you could in theory hog it out if you needed to, but if you ever want to balance the wheel again you need to make sure the hole is round and on center. I got lucky with finding this aftermarket set of rims, and honestly if I still had them I would give them to you. Unfortunately I got frustrated with this car and its now probably made into soda cans and soup cans.

Bryan, last I heard, the cannonball run subaru was in Bellingham, WA... I think it was Carfreak85 that knew about its whereabouts?? My appologies to Carfreak if that is wrong. That car has a super scary carbureted turbo setup... *shudders* So ANYway, back to your beautiful subaru... I would pass up any late model STI to drive around a gem like that clamshell wagon. -Mike (thanks again for getting me that transmission so fast.. it was the wrong one, but I did some frankenstiening and got Amanda's wagon put back together and driving good as new) -
Well this is now the eighth subaru that I have owned, and I am finally back into an ea81.. not just any ea81, an EA81T!!! Here's when I first got it: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/500/medium/100_0761.JPG http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/500/medium/100_0769.JPG Work that I did to it: 2 MWE axles (new CV cups not reman) Engine rebuild ITM gaskets New 3 angle valve job Rings, Bearings, OP,WP etc... All new hoses, every last friggin vacuum line, oil line, water line, pcv line Had to do some "modifications" to some of the lines going to the turbo because they were so rotted out. New performance brand radiator Removed leaky power steering for "strong arm steering" New Tie rods New ball joints http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/500/medium/100_0770.JPG http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/500/medium/100_0772.JPG http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/500/medium/100_0773.JPG http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/500/medium/100_07751.JPG http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/500/medium/100_07761.JPG and here's sam helping me put it back in the beast... the funny part about this picture, that I didnt notice at the time, is that everything in this picture is 4wd. (thats one of sam's eagles on the left) http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/500/medium/100_0771.JPG and all said and done, here it is back in the car, running like a champ, passed california smog with flying colors.. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/500/medium/100_0778.JPG FYI if anyone is interested in hardware kits for that modification I did to the exhaust, let me know, cause rotordyne, who I work for, is thinking about selling those kits, cause we need them on the aircraft as well.. (the other option is using bolts with holes for safety wire.) let me know which idea you like better cause in the near future rotordyne will start distributing subaru components. -Mike

Anyone who is interested in those forged pistons from RAM, they are AWESOME.. I work for Rotordyne Areo, and right now we are rebuilding a prototype EA81 for us and we decided to go with these pistons. Also, I talked to Wyseco (manufacturer of these pistons) and found out to order them custom thru them would cost about $120 per piston anyway, so your only paying $20 extra to get them thru RAM engines. The skirts on these pistons is A LOT shorter, as well as the wrist pin, so definately lighter.. They also give you more compression than OE. -Mike

Windshield gaskets Batch One ***Completed***
RenaissanceMan replied to Zefy's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Does anyone know what the ETA is on these gaskets?? I havent gotten anything yet. -Mike -
any internally regulated alternator will work... hell if you want to throw a delco alternator on there all you would need to do is buy the connector at the auto parts store and put on one of those alternators instead... truth laid out simple... all internally regulated alternators are almost identical, you just gotta know which pins to use and where they go. -Mike.. (I might be able to get a picture in a couple days.. things are going kinda busy right now cause later this week I drive out to a "Fly in" as the Rotordyne subaru engine representative.)

Another one bites the dust...
RenaissanceMan replied to RenaissanceMan's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Ok nobody touches my stage 1 wagon, she's all I got left. The drivetrain probably from the brat will go in the wagon so that can run again. Pushbar is also going on the wagon with some rally lights mounted to it. I already have 1 person on first pick for the rollbar WHEN I decide what to do with the brat overall. Keep in mind this brat has the GL dash with the tach. Anyway I will make a parts list and let you guys know when I am ready to part it out (if I fully decide to do so). -Mike -
I just might be in the market for another brat... I would definately want the older 78-79 brats, whatever is available. Keep posted or send me a PM with details... -Mike

D#@MNIT locked the keys in my ea81
RenaissanceMan replied to 75subie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Fortunately these cars are the "unlockable" type, with a slim jim.. Usually campus security has one. My only other suggestion, is try to find someone with an old datsun, or early nissan. The keys they use are very similar to our subaru one. if your tumbler is worn out enough, you might be able to get a datsun key to unlock your car. -

Well I am devistated to see what I did, but I was driving too fast on a small road, not expecting oncoming cars. I drove around the 1 turn between 41 and my street at probably around 60 mph (I had grown used to speeding around on this desolate road) And wasnt expecting a car to come thru the same turn at the same time. http://usmb.net/albums/albuo68/100_0738.jpg I swerved out of the way to avoid side swiping the other car. Unfortunately the rear tires broke loose afterward, swung one way, then countersteered and swung all the way around till I was flying backwards, dove off the road, through a fence, and then dropped down about 2 feet causing it to roll 3 times, landing on her feet. Stupidity at its finest. No one was hurt. I got out of the car (nascar style caust the door dont open anymore), and walked away like superman. This car came with a factory roll bar, had that bar not been there, the devistation probably would have cost me a lot more maybe even my life. After collecting most of my things scattered about in the dark with the help of some neighbors, I got back in the brat, started it up and drove it home. Yes, it fired right up and I drove that thing right into my driveway where it sits, ruined. At some point everyone has to have a moment of learning of when to have fun and when to not be stupid. I dont have a girlfriend right now, and I can honestly say I just destroyed the 1 thing I loved most. -Mike -

Do you think that high performance kit they offer will work on my 79? -
My apologies to everyone at the show for not making it this year, I still give my boss crap about it. Basically I requested time 3 months ago, which is great. However, she filed my request for the wrong month, and refused to work with me on getting that time off. I think she was just lazy and didnt care that this was the 1 thing I look forward to going to every year. I even had my new 79 brat that I picked up in AZ. In all honesty its still eating away at me that I couldent make the show. Cheers to next year. Sorry to miss you guys, Dave, Brian, Greg, JB, and everyone else that I cant remember names. -Mike

I caught an "invisible" in action
RenaissanceMan replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
one brush?? If the alternator has only 1 brush contacting, then it wont produce current at all. If you have a bad diode then it will have 1/3 the output, perhaps thats what you meant? As for the corrosion, is that tire different then the rest? if you have a steel belted one there versus nylon ones on the other tires, I can see that one wheel acting as a capacitor. Probably should just put some dielectric grease on the threads to prevent moisture from getting in there, and torque the lugs to spec -Mike -
Urgent, transmission needed
RenaissanceMan replied to RenaissanceMan's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Talk about some major overhaulin... for those that want to know, the innards of the Ea63 transmission are interchangeable with the innards of a EA71 2wd 4 speed transmission. (different final drive ratios I think, but still works) put the good guts in the right case, add 3 years of automotive education and experience.. and PRESTO! Amanda is back on the road! Pulled the engine and bad trans out this morning, went into san luis to get a new rear main seal and pick up the trans, got back and did the rear main/clutch, found out the trans was different, took the two transmissions apart, put the good one back together, put the trans and engine back in the car, hook everything up, drive it around, and have a beer! (I had a really long day) Couldent have done it without her help cleaning parts tho. -Mike
