1996 Subaru Legacy LEMON
mattocs replied to subarulegacy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIts smoking because oil is dripping on the exhaust which stays hot after the engine is off, so yeah, the smoke may continue for a bit.

mattocs replied to legacyak's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI use the same method. I've got car parts, tires, a rim, sheet metal, a few tools, etc. but a few weeks ago some ********************* was able to find my tire pressure gauge, OBDII diagnostic tool, some tools, and my jumper cables.

mattocs replied to sonofbuster's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXCheck out the Yokohama Avid TRZ tires. I've had them on my Outback for about 12,000 miles and they are great. Good luck.

EJ25 HG check
mattocs replied to 92_rugby_subie's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXUse that in your negotiating. You might be able to knock off a $1000 to cover possible head gasket replacement.

another ej22 swap question
mattocs replied to AKwhitetrash907's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI figured there wasn't an easy way. The engine in my Outback is fine.. the body is awful. I really don't like this emissions crap.. And the CEL would bother me, too.

another ej22 swap question
mattocs replied to AKwhitetrash907's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIs there any way to use a EJ22 without the EGR (1996, manual transmission) in a swap and not get a CEL? (sorry to thread hijack)

mattocs replied to UMT's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI'm not sure if the OEM are the same as the Felpro, but I've had great luck with Felpro gaskets in several cars and motorcycles.

CV Joints & Boots Replacement; Split Boots?
mattocs replied to Jaimesbeam's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI used a split boot on my Outback about 7 years ago. It lasted a few years until I got it replaced when the clutch was replaced. I got it at Advance Auto Parts.

97 Legacy alternator trouble in Seattle
mattocs replied to dromond's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI don't mean to hijack this thread, but is there a tutorial on the USRM on rebuilding alternators? I've got a failing one sitting in the hatch of my wagon. I don't want to be a hoarder of broken car parts, but I feel I could possibly fix it...

wrong plugs wires and coil pack??? maybe??
mattocs replied to amill's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWhat brand of plugs and wires did you get? The cheap NGK plugs are best. I've had good luck wIth cheap wires from AutoZone. I've got about 80,000 miles on my current wires. Some people will tell you to get OEM wires. It won't blow up. What issues are you having?

Newest member to the Subaru collection
mattocs replied to Caboobaroo's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSounds like a nice car. I too have a Hyundai. Its a 2005 Accent. We've had it since new. Its slow, uncomfortable, and way to small. But it gets 35 MPG and has been reliable. At 100k miles I'm starting to have some issues (rusty hole in oil pan and leaking master cylinder.) Congrats on the new Subaru!

EJ head gasket walk through. Interest?
mattocs replied to Caboobaroo's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI'd read it. I have been thinking about getting an Outback that needed head gaskets and either replacing them or dropping my EJ22 in, so I've been reading everything on head gaskets that I can find. If you do a tutorial, include pictures!

1997 legacy gt 2.5 dohc head gasket help(newb)
mattocs replied to Shellhammer13's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXGood point. I replace my plugs every time I rotate my tires, or every other oil change. I've never done plugs on a EJ25.

2.5 engine and body parts question
mattocs replied to SLCGL-10's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI know the headlights off a 95,Legacy L are the same as on a 96 Legacy Outback. So the lights off a 95 would work, too.

spark plug gap
mattocs replied to gsac132's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAs was already said, NGK plugs come pre-gapped (and are the best!) At least they have been every time I've done the plugs in my Subaru, Hyundai, and Suzuki motorcycle. And I LOL'd at the .44". :-P

Strut Replacement Advice - 2000 Forester
mattocs replied to howards11's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI've been looking into replacing the struts on a 96 Outback, and from my research I've found a lot of people like the KYB GR2 struts. Rockauto has then for $65. I doubt they are much more for your Forester. I called around for prices (parts, labor) for rear struts, and it ranged from $500 to $750. I'll be doing it myself if I end up fixing them. Good luck.

To buy a car that was a rental or not to buy
mattocs replied to elmwood22's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI've rented cars before. I know what i've done in them. I probably wouldn't buy one. I had a AWD Ford Edge once. That thing moved real nice for a wagon. :-D
