Engine Noises
AlpineRaven replied to AlpineRaven's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAh!!! Well there is one thing we do have here in Austalia is called "GM Top Engine Cleaner" Part no: 1#1050002, I must admit, it saves fuel while using it hehe... anyway yeah? I can put 1/3-1/2 in the oil crank to clean rings/lifters etc.... That can be done, but can't drive the car while its doing it right? or I can drive my car at the same time in short period of time? Cheers AP edit: found the link of the can of what it looks like that we have here in Australia that you can buy from GM Holden. http://69.20.110.81/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=29467

Engine Noises
AlpineRaven replied to AlpineRaven's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXRighto, seems that I have to take the rocker cover off and do a bit of work there, no worries I'll get the book out and read abt the lifters. Seafoam, problem is, we dont have them in Australia, is there any type of alternative product that is similar to seafoam? Seafoam is a cleaning stuff that cleans your engine while you drive or idle for 20 mins? Another thing maybe that is another problem, it has been fairly warm recently and using thin oil might've been causing this problem? Cheers AP

RX Leone LSD Diff.
I've sourced an RX Leone rear diff (not recently, ages ago), yes its 4.11 LSD from an Automatic RX Turbo. Now I wanna to know if I could change the crown from 41 teeth down to 37 teeth to match the AWD gearbox. Can it be possible to do that myself at home? or do I require special tools? Will the bolt holes fit? (I'm getting the 37 teeth crown from an 89 L series wagon) as my rear diff that I'm suspicious that is worn out as it makes whine noises, and while I am changing the crown over, is there any notices that I should do while its taken apart ie. New seals etc? Thanks AP

Engine Noises
Hey fellas, As I am hearing impaired myself and I have limited hearing loss and Subaru mechanics are "too busy" to have a look at my car, or I don't trust other type of 3rd party - non-Subaru mechanic. Anyway This question I want to ask you guys if you do recognise this type of noises that I am experiencing on my EJ22 while I am accelerating it makes some type of noises which sounds like a Diesel 4WD going past me on the highway, but it seems to be quiet at 900 rpm (idle) but when I am driving on 3000rpm in 5th on highway I can hear some sort of noises, its not quite loud, sounds like ticking noises, when car is under load its louder than cruising noises. Not aware any type of knocks etc, feels like its normal. It recently changed the timing belt about 5000klms ago and the noises recently came up say 1500klms ago and maybe its due for oil change? (I drive 550 - 700 kilometres a week), Last changed oil is 5000kms ago. Current oil is castrol magnetic. Is it too thin? Planning to change the oil tomorrow and see what happens, if its tappets would it go away with fresh oil change?. How will I know below - - Noisy tappets /lifters? - Worn Crankshaft bearings? - wouldn't it have knocking sound? - Wrong oil/getting thin? The engine has done 205,000 klms. Cheers AP

Clouds of smoke....help....fixed I think.
AlpineRaven replied to edrach's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXBtw I'm not too sure if this is correct, the PCV valve is small about one half inches long? Its non Electrical?, it does rattle inside it?, but it was covered up in oil snoot & carbon build up, so I cleaned up with Carby cleaner looks like it did it as treat. Its connected to a big pipe to a smaller pipe that goes into the manifold on the right side of the engine (air box side) is that the correct one? How do I tell if I need a new one? Cheers AP

Clouds of smoke....help....fixed I think.
AlpineRaven replied to edrach's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIf the compression tester doesn't show leaky valves/worn rings, is there any way that I can find out if the valve seals are out - are they easy to replace even if the heads on the engine?? or the heads has to come off? Mine only does it at the startup, but doesn't do it while I am driving the car (but I noticed it does use oil) btw its EJ22. Cheers AP

Clouds of smoke....help....fixed I think.
AlpineRaven replied to edrach's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWhat does PCV valve do? Would it encourage to use excess oil? I did a compression test on mine and they're around roughly 165-170psi on a old worn gauge. Engine runs fine, no mis-fire, new sparkies, low kilometre (50,000klms) O2 from EJ20 Impreza. Cheers AP

White Smoke
I may have similar problem, is there a small puff of smoke that goes for approx 5 - 7 seconds then it goes away, only occurs on cold starts? I am buggered on that idea, I talked people about it and they said "oh its a boxer thing" other said, "rings on its way out" or "valve seals are on its way out" etc.... But I did a compression test on it, they're all average 165-170psi on EJ22 (maybe due worn dodgy gauge?) One idea is that there is a leaky injector which leaks onto the valve/cylinder chamber (only one way is to take them to get ultrasonic clean)? What does PCV Valve do? and what does it have to do with it? The fuel is around average 24-26mpg - is that normal for EJ22 AWD 5MT sedan?. Cheers AP

EJ-series water pump longevity
AlpineRaven replied to Snowman's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXFor the time of what its worth, you're better off replacing the water pump at the same time when you replace the timing belt.. because if in within 10,000 miles the pump goes/leaks etc then you have to take the timing belt off again!!! just not worth it, and for less hassel is to replace the pump and belts/seals at the same time. Pump aren't that expensive, its AU$104 Cheers AP

High Pitched noises - Timing Belt?
AlpineRaven replied to AlpineRaven's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAfter driving the Liberty to town 50kms away the noise stopped so looks like it was the tensioner causing it. Got the new seals. fitted them today and its all good now. Thank you guys. Cheers AP

Timing Belt change
AlpineRaven replied to rweddy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI STRONGLY suggest you to remove the radiator!!!!!!!! otherwise one tiny mistake the core is damaged!!!!!!!!!!! learnt from experience mate!.. An trick is to do that as i did it with mine yesterday is to - you'll need a 22mm socket, a 1/2 inch ratchet, and a breaker bar, set the socket to undo (lefty loosie righty tighty ) and wedge the breaker bar over the ratchet and against the ground or chassis. just hit the starter to turn over the engine once, but not start it. you can disconnect the ignitor if you dont feel comfortable. that will loosen the bolt... Thats if you don't have the correct tool. Cheers AP

Timing Belt Replacement
AlpineRaven replied to forester01's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXEasier way of doing it - I did it yesterday and its a great tip - you need a 22mm socket, a 1/2 inch ratchet, and a breaker bar, set the socket to undo (lefty loosie righty tighty ) and wedge the breaker bar over the ratchet and against the chassis. just hit the starter a couple of times to turn over the engine, but not start it, just turn over once. you can disconnect the ignitor if you dont feel comfortable. that will loosen the bolt.. Cheers AP

High Pitched noises - Timing Belt?
Yesterday I replaced the timing belt on EJ22 Engine, didn't have any problems at all (lucky I had previous experience on EA82 engine), had a bit of hiccups but all went smoothly, it was 3pm Saturday noon when I was putting together, I realised the rubber seals was falling apart due leaky power steering pump seal (just replaced yesterday as well) as it was too hard to keep them together/one piece, so I put the cover back on without the seals that goes between timing belt cover to rear belt cover/engine block. Now I started up the engine and it has an high pitched squealing noises (didn't have the vee belts for Air Con/Power Steering)... I knew I did double check on all belts ensuring they are all very tight - used torque wrench on the pulleys etc. Two things that I could be suspected are either - The timing belt is too tight? (I had 2nd person to help me to put the belt on but man it was so tight) Or Do I have to loosen the belt tension adjustor as its already on tight spot - I didn't touch that when I did the belt. Or Is it due because of the seals between the timing belt covers? OR Could be something else? ie bearings? Tomorrow noon I will go to Subaru and buy some new seals for it. Cheers & thanks. AP

are 2.2 liter and 2.5 liter timing belts similar?
AlpineRaven replied to idosubaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXon EJ22 engine is SOHC and EJ25 is DOHC which means the timing belt is bigger/longer than EJ22's belt. But the change over of belts should be simular. Cheers AP

Welded diff in winter?
You're better off getting clutch type LSD, it'll be an open diff until you're spinning one of the wheels, then the fluid will heat up to activate the clutches to make it into LSD. I have it in my Liberty and its worth having in ice & mud. Cheers AP

Diesel Oils in Subarus? Pro and Cons
G'day fellas, I would like to start an discussion about Diesel Oils in Subaru Engines due noisy tappets & cleanness etc What would happen if we use Diesel Oils in NA & Turbo Petrol/Gasoline engines? Could Diesel Oils can ruin Catalytic Converter? Could Diesel Oils makes the engine to run hotter than normal oils? What is the Pros and Cons on using Diesel oils in Subarus (on NA & Turbos)? Thank you guys AP

clicking when cornering!??
Jack the Scoob up and wriggle around on the wheels to see if there is large movements, take the wheel off and check the brakes & calipers also check if there is any movements as well and yes check the bolts as you might've missed something.. last thing would be the CVs that could be worn out?? Cheers Tristan

Or that the battery is getting old & wearing out and has low CCA (Cold Current Amps) rating same with my wagon, they battery was about to go and had weak starting rating, so wacked in a new battery in, not a problem, or your alternator could be on its way out? Cheers Tristan

5spd D/R conversion Qs...
Wondering, if it was possible to take out the low range gear ratio from the 4 spd D/R and put it in 5spd D/R gearbox -> that requires taking the gearbox appart and exchange gears across - can it be done? Cheers Tristan
