Heater Core gone Bad?!
Meeky Moose replied to trooperjeep's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i read your other post... i wonder if theres something in the fins of the heater core not letting the air flow through it entirely.. but letting enough come through to where its got air coming out of the vents.. maybe a mouse got in there and made a home.. i don't see how though lol. my RX has a similiar problem although not as bad.. heatoer core doesn't leak or anythng, and the rest of the cooling system is in great shape, but when its cold outside, the damn thing barely puts out enough heat to take the chill off.. dunno why.. if you haven't yet, check the valve that opens and closes the hot water flow .. its hooked to the cable that runs the temperature control.. my guess is that mine is partially corroded and not fully opening.. yours may have corroded to the point it won't let any past it.. normally if your heatercore is bad you'll get a leak or the smell of antifreeze in the car.. you should be able to get one at any parts store, if you decide to replace it, but i don't think thats the problem.. -

how do i tell what gen my heads are?
Meeky Moose replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
heh the wagon had an excuse with 290k original... last big trip it made it sucked 2 gallons of water in 300 miles... but around town it was fine.. it got parked because of the rust on the frame (wouldn't pass inspection) also the radiator plug was snapped off and leaking... but i deffinitely got my use outa it.. the hatch needed an engine cause it had a rod knock.. the only time it got remotely hot was due to a bad thermostat and the 2-3 piece hose job the previous owner did to it to make the legacy radiator work.. headgaskets were fine... the RX only got hot once (according to the gauge) but after inspection with my bare hand i came to the conclusion it hadn't even got to runnin temp yet.. (bare hand on heads, block, and intake.. no burns, barely warm really) but it was 1/4 gallon low on coolant.. go figure.. then it ran fine for 2 days then poof.. acctually we were on the way home from wal-mart and i got about 5 miles from my house and it started missing... no smoke, steam, fluid goin places, nothing.. i got home found a plug wire popped off.. so i didn't think nothing of it, since it wasn't overheating.. so i worked on the stereo for a couple hours, then started the car and it almost wouldn't start.. almost like it jumped time.. so i finally got it started and saw the green firehose spraying all over the driveway... hehe, besides a little ribbing is fun don't ya think? -

yeah i remembered you sayin it had 1 gen1 and 1 gen3.. the ones on ebay are gen1's cause its just plain ea82 on the side of them.. so i'm going to pass.. i'm bettin the drivers side head went.. i was hearing what sounded like piston slap for about a week before it blew, and the sound was comin from that side... i've found jap pullout motors for $550 (risingsun) but i'm a bit sceptical on used motors.. and i wouldn't know what gen heads are on it.. i know i don't overheat cars, but like the little bit of reassurance just in case, even tho its not much. i'll prolly just end up gettin a new one from CCR.. -
well i deffinitely think theres enough "i want some" to make it worthwhile yippee! hmm bumperstickers, rear window stickers, t-shirts, hoodies, socks with a logo, jackets, vests... different color ****s and hoddies would be cool too, maybe black with white logo's and of course the white with black logos.. deffinitely kids sizes.. my little girl loves sweatshirts vs jackets..

i've had 2 subie's with teh same issue.. right about 65mph it would stick until you slowed down or sped up at least 10mph then it would move. they only did it when it was cold.. so i figured some sorta goo somewhere

Meeky Moose replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
hey Mark, i think i'm gonna have to pass, now that the RX needs a motor.. can't have too many dead soobs sittin in my driveway.. I'm going to be keeping the hatch for the moment since its the only reliable one i have.. Going to let the RX sit till febuary and get a new engine from CCR and put in it.. after that i can start lookin for another car.. again... -

Meeky Moose replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well i jury rigged the wagon seats into the hatch tonight, so its now drivable again.. I'm just gonna park the RX till tax time, and buy me a damn motor somewhere.. might go with CCR and put a brand spankin new one in it.. gonna do it right the first time, guess tomorrow i'll go buy a grease gun and change the tierod end on the hatch, so it doesn't fall off now that its become a daily driver.. -
well when i first bought the ole turbo wagon, the trans made some god awful sounds.. it was soo loud ya couldn't turn the stock stereo up loud enough to hear it.. it was a mix between a whine and grinding sound.. very wicked.. it shifted fine, and the previous owner said it'd been makin that sound for over 100k.. but i replaced it anyways, just cause i didn't like the noise..

acctually the more i think about it now that the angry pissed offness has passed, i don't think i'll put that 290k engine in there, its got leakin rump roast seals, and it was overheatin on 3 hour trips and loosin water somewhere.. so i don't think i'll even mess with the damn thing.. i'll just have 2 dead cars in my driveway, and a stinkin hatchback with no seats.. i get to walk to work in the snow, yay! -
well, i guess i do get to find out how many more miles i can get outa the engine in the turbo wagon. on my way home today from walmart the RX blew a friggin headgasket.. looks like a firehose out the tailpipe now.. the thing that sux is tomorrow is my 23rd b-day, and its going to snow 6" tonight. so i get to swap an engine in the friggin snow tomorrow.. just what i wanted to be doing.. i just get to pray the 290k engine thats going in runs forever.. but i think it might have its own problems as well..

question about RX sedans
Meeky Moose replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
hehe, no that one is fine, says RX 4wd turbo too inside the trunk is where the plastics over the fenderwells, and around the tail light sockets is all gone... -
are the plastic panels in the truck of an RX sedan the same as any other 85-89 sedan? i know loyales have a different body shape. The plastic panels in my trunk are half gone or missing, and i'd just like to get them replaced, but needed to know what cars i should look in at the scrap yard...

Help! My '88 Justy Just Keeps On Dying!
Meeky Moose replied to Gene's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i had a honda crx once upon a time, and it would do the same thing, cutout while drivin, die at random, EXACTLY like you describe.. it was a bad ignition module in the distributor. for that honda it was about $100 had 4 wires that plugged in, that was it... 10 minute fix.. i'm not sure how hard it is to change or how much it cost on a subaru though.. i would start there personally.. -
alright, i've been drivin the car for a couple weeks on the new thermostat, no problem, it runs below half on the temp gauge.. so i get in it to go to lunch, drive it 3 miles, look down and the gauge is pegged in the red.. so first thought, ohh ****!! so i pull over pop the hood, the damn thing wasn't even hot.. radiator hoses were normal temp, radiator was normal temp.. engine wasn't even close to hot.. i know when a car gets hot like that you pop the hood, you can feel the heat expecially when its 40 degrees outside.. not this time, it was like normal, so i put my hand on the back of the intake/block. not burning hot by any means, just warm.. so i start it back up and the gauge moves up to just below the red, then slowly climbs.. at this point i pop the radiator cap, and it took about a 1/4 gallon to top it off.. then i thought maybe i didn't get the air outa the system when i did the thermostat.. so i put the cap back on, walk back around to look at the gauge and its sittin right below the half (normal spot).. at this point i scratch my head, close the hood, and drive off... i drove about 25 miles at lunch time, and it didn't do it again.. but when i shut it off, i could hear the overflow tank gurgling.. i've replaced the thermostat and radiator cap in the last 2 weeks.. it doesn't smoke or leak coolant, that i know for a fact.. just seemed odd that it would peg in the red and be low on coolant... think it was an air bubble? maybe somehting else? :cornfuzz: this is the RX btw..

New guy, 1984 Subaru GL Sedan engine problems...
Meeky Moose replied to gmcfan's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
welcome to the board  as far as the carb goes, if you want to do performance things to it anyways, i would ditch that carb and get a real weber.. can find one here for not too much.. it will make a huge difference and you'll be able to tune it properly.. as far as the temperature goes, you need to get this one fixed before anything else, these engines don't handle heat well at all.. i would replace the thermostat, flush the cooling system, and make sure the electric fan(s) are working properly. i'm sure someone here can help with the vacuum leaks.. my EA-81 hatchback has an aftermarket weber, so alot of the vacuum stuff changes... -
heh, would be cool if he could make a small hoody for my 2 year old  so that'd make 3 hoodies fer me if ya count the baby one

i just replaced all 4 in my hatch, bought some sylvania halogens.. adjusted at night.. and i must say, they are brighter than ****. people flash me with just the dims on, then i bright'em and they back off... ohh yeah they cost me about $50 for all 4
