A friend blew his 2000 2.5 SOHC. I am going to give him my 96 2.5 DOHC short block. I know to use his heads, intake manifold, sensors and tensioner bracket. Also to block the egr port if his doesn't have egr. My question is, is it ok to use the ej25 turbo gasket (642) or is another thickness required as this was the only year that the head design required premium gas. thx in advance. O.

Turning the crank would make the job easier, then you can get one size bearing as they are not the same from the factory.(This adds to cost) Subaru , King or ACL for bearings, your choice. NPR for rings, keep the pistons. Engine gaskets from Fel Pro and the odd O rings from Subaru. O.

Once the panel is removed. Lower the window. At some point (maybe halfway) the bolts will be accessible. Just look at it as you lower, you'll find that point. O.

No you do not. Just need to disconnect the bypass pipe and radiator hoses and the bolts. Wiggle or pry to remove. Only use a metal gasket on install. I use a little sealant to hold the gasket in place as I work it back on. O.

If you have not removed the t belt, lock the flexplate if auto or block flywheel if mt. Should be a lot easier then. If t belt already removed, take off valve covers and hold the flat part of cam with an open end.. O.

In the meanwhile use the Subaru "conditioner" to help slow the external hg leak. Make sure the system is full. Once it gets hot and pushes into the overflow, you have to do everything to make sure the block side has coolant and minimal air. Stant makes an Xacstat #(not positive of number 474.....) that is the same as Subaru's unit. O.

Don't know of this "fix". Generally (tho not always) this code is related to the 2nd O2 sensor. The fix for this is to replace that sensor. Many have resolved this issue with a spark plug spacer .if there is room to mount. Do search for P0420. O.

if it's disappearing it must be leaking somewhere. He can clean off the bottom of engine and tranny pan as best he can, then park over clean cardboard and trace back to the leak. Definitely have him check the small hoses from the cooler. O/

Have him take a spare alternator belt and tools needed to change it (12mm socket). If he doesn't know how, show him. Few things worse than being stuck in the middle of nowhere and being hosed by someone over a $15 belt. O.

Brightons also had rear drums not discs O.

Subaru's 2.2 gaskets are composite but the 2.5's are MLS. Replacement preferences, Subaru, Six Star, Cometic and then Fel Pro. IMO. Many times your dealer will come close to price matching an online price and it saves the shipping plus wait time. O.

There is an egr workaround. Do a search on legacygt.com. Will have pics etc. O.

There is a rollover valve in the tank piping. Never had occasion to deal with it. I'd call a dealer and ask if it has/needs to be reset and if so how. Spark? Timing correct.? No fuel? Any codes in the system? O.

If necessary just splice the correct plug end. O.

Remote has lost its program. Go to cars101.com and see remote section.to reprogram. Happens when you lose battery connection. O.

There is a code stored for a transmission fault. Do a search for how to read transmission codes via handshake method. Will determine exactly which one you have. If you turn in slow hard circles does the tranny bind? O.

Working in a yard, no lift and no air tools look at about an hour. If you can take a portable drill with a cut off wheel it'll make life easier. O.

^?????? Not sure I get this answer. ie What if all four tires are the same? Can't say this is definitive, ( I only remember 3 occasions, an 07,a 96 and a 99), but with all four wheels off the ground and the car in gear, the left front and the right rear turns until and unless you start the others to turn, then they will remain doing so. O.

On a car this age it's probably your separator plate that is leaking. Only way to fix is to pull engine and replace with the updated unit. Til then you'll have to live with the burning oil. O.
