  1. if it's disappearing it must be leaking somewhere. He can clean off the bottom of engine and tranny pan as best he can, then park over clean cardboard and trace back to the leak. Definitely have him check the small hoses from the cooler. O/
  2. Have him take a spare alternator belt and tools needed to change it (12mm socket). If he doesn't know how, show him. Few things worse than being stuck in the middle of nowhere and being hosed by someone over a $15 belt. O.
  3. Subaru's 2.2 gaskets are composite but the 2.5's are MLS. Replacement preferences, Subaru, Six Star, Cometic and then Fel Pro. IMO. Many times your dealer will come close to price matching an online price and it saves the shipping plus wait time. O.
  4. There is an egr workaround. Do a search on legacygt.com. Will have pics etc. O.
  5. There is a rollover valve in the tank piping. Never had occasion to deal with it. I'd call a dealer and ask if it has/needs to be reset and if so how. Spark? Timing correct.? No fuel? Any codes in the system? O.
  6. Remote has lost its program. Go to cars101.com and see remote section.to reprogram. Happens when you lose battery connection. O.
  7. There is a code stored for a transmission fault. Do a search for how to read transmission codes via handshake method. Will determine exactly which one you have. If you turn in slow hard circles does the tranny bind? O.
  8. Working in a yard, no lift and no air tools look at about an hour. If you can take a portable drill with a cut off wheel it'll make life easier. O.
  9. The 99 Forester should be the same as the same as the 2000 Legacy. Look under my name in the new gen faq sticky above. Has links for fsm. O.
  10. ^?????? Not sure I get this answer. ie What if all four tires are the same? Can't say this is definitive, ( I only remember 3 occasions, an 07,a 96 and a 99), but with all four wheels off the ground and the car in gear, the left front and the right rear turns until and unless you start the others to turn, then they will remain doing so. O.
  11. On a car this age it's probably your separator plate that is leaking. Only way to fix is to pull engine and replace with the updated unit. Til then you'll have to live with the burning oil. O.
  12. There is no real need to replace the springs and retainers unless you have a block with more than 300k on it.. They will do whatever you need, even with a torque grind cam from Delta. O.
  13. If you are just replacing the cams, all you'll need are new cam seals, sealant and assembly lube Probably valve cover gaskets and maybe new grommets for the vc bolts. If you are dismantling the valve train then add valve lapping materials. An accurate torque wrench as the cam bolts are very low torque. Patience O.
  14. Many videos etc on youtube. In the NewGen stcky above there is reference to T belt how to's. The fifth seal is for the crank. Remove oil pump , check and retighten screws on back. Will need a new o ring. Do not use the paper gasket for the water pump. Generally the original metal can be reused. If not, oem. Take your time O. T belt sohc.pdf
  15. clean your iac thoroughly and make sure you don't have any loose connections or cracks in the hose to iac. O.
  16. Correction: It's not that the incompletes won't show ready, but every time you turn the ignition off, it starts all over again. A software glitch that has resulted in the exemption. O.
  17. Oil separator plate. Cost @ 38-40 including the screws that are needed. Have read somewhere that a 3rd party now also makes it. Dealers don't have shipping charges. O.
  18. you'll have to find a place that's a little warmer somehow. The JB won't cure properly in freezing temps either. O.
  19. For what POR costs, he can get a junkyard pan. If you have to JB it, to make it work, best is to remove pan (which will require jacking the engine up to get the last few bolts), completely clean it, wire wheel the area then jb it. Otherwise, just drain the oil first, wire wheel it, spray with carb cleaner to remove any grease, then JB. O.
