What's wrong with Fram oil filters??
psylosyfer replied to TheLoyale's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I am retired from my profession, But work part time for the Union Pacific railroad, We have 10's of thousands of vehicles, Most are used alot on dirt roads, Oil change every 5K miles is what the maintenence department goes with. Regardless of vehicle manufacturer. I don't know how they decided this but we do get 300K out of gas engines before selling them off. -
Also be SURE the "spring washer" is on correct, it has a marking that says "out" .

Same here, passenger side intake gasket, (of course I changed both), Look carefully there are several possibilites. heater hoses, carb preheater hose, temp sender, etc. -
Should I get the 1.7 million mile Subaru??
psylosyfer replied to moosens's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I must disagree, Our work vehicles (not subes) are 2006 models that have over 150K already, That would be 1.5 M in ten years.Though I am sure they will be replaced at 300K (company policy). -

which way advances timing on ea 82?
psylosyfer replied to matts87glsedan's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Easy answer with ANY car (that uses a dist,) Pull the cap to see direction that the rotor spins, Rotating cap the OPPOSITE direction advances timing. -
Too bad you could'nt find an ugly old truck or something and set it upside down on her precious driveway!
-
If you turned the distributer when you replaced the cap, If you can turn it by hand without loosening the hold down screws you may have. To check it you'll need to get ahold of a timing light

Timing Belt Covers - Yay or Nay?
psylosyfer replied to mrroot's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I really like the idea of using tie wraps! Then a pair of dykes with your 12mm socket and your good to go. In spite of the convenience of running with no covers, We are all obviously hands on car owners. My point being (as Baccaruda mentioned) how much time saved is worth the risk of a MAJOR injury if you, your clothing, hair. Or ANYTHING gets between a belt and pulley? These aren't smooth belts on a spring loaded tensioner like a serpentine, Tight non giving toothed belts will take a thumb or whatever faster than you can realize you put it where you shouldn't while setting timing or any other adjustments that require a running engine. Any one here who HASN'T rub up against a hot pipe or lost some knuckle on an alternator fan etc. While your looking at the tool in the OTHER hand? And if someone ELSE is helping or supervising (like guy's around open hoods do). Can you spell "lawsuit"? Not to mention the chance of anything besides a rag falling in there might fling into your face or your radiator!! Why not the best of both worlds and use the zip ties? On the other hand what's life without a little risk? -
In California you get NO slack due to faulty speedo.

Any notice the rusty white GL wagon jamming through the snow. with a jump ramp welded to the front. That is "flashed " during the discovery channel's "stunt junkies" ad ? I did not see the show that the stunt was in. Maybe a snow boarder jumping a moving car for ????? Anyone catch the episode?

Wheel Bearings on 1991 Loyale?
psylosyfer replied to Kitsuneracer's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I replaced a rear wheel bearing on my Loyale last week, the bearing plus inner and outer seals, came to about $70 tax incl. A local garage pressed the old out and the new in for $45, (took the rear swingarm to them). Managed to do the R&R without special tools, But it sure was hard loosening the nut on the bottom of the shock (after breaking it loose, I noticed that it was spot welded to the swingarm on 3 corners of the nut!!) Next time I'll know to loosen the BOLT, Not the nut!! LOL Works great, took about 90 minutes to disassemble, about 60 to reassemble. (note- NAPA had the seals for less than 1/2 the price of Kragen. Same make.) Be sure to put the spring washer on the spindle facing correctly (it's marked "outside" after cleaning the dirt off), This was the cause of the bearing failing. A brake job last October, The washer was reinstalled backward. So I saved $185 from the $300 quote I was given by two shops. -
Possibly getting an old gen
psylosyfer replied to subiefan's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I regularly made a 100 mile round trip to Yreka Ca. from Dunsmuir Ca. Driving the speed limit on I-5 (65-70) It took 3 gallon's to make the trip. I did this every day for 40 days. windows up to, down back. no AC, easy on the accelerator pedal. With 91 Loyale 5sp. well maintained. This would suggest 33.3 MPG. highway -
Can also be caused by a bad relay under the dash, left of steering column.

Glad it's fixed!
