Another suby build
So mostaru came over today and helped me (did most of the work ) weld up my front bumper. I think in came out real nice. All that is left is to cap the ends and paint it. Then start with the rear one....... P.S. Monstaru I figured out what was wrong with "my" welder....the polarity was backwards. Works great now. You'll have to forgive the spots in some of the photos. The lens was dirty...it is after all inside a shop enviroment. Ruffed in and tacked Then we weld Mounted up MMMMMMMMMMMM Puuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrtttttttttttttyyyyyyyyy Grill/radiator guard. I made it follow the angle of the head lights/hood seem. I plan on runing mesh when its comleted Ruffed in fender line, these actually came out nice and level by the time we were done(as you can see in this picture it is just tacked at the moment). Still need to cut it along the wheel well line

Brat as a motivator (long post)
Well he is certainly that. He used to tear everything he got apart. Not because he was being destructive, but because he was interested/curious on how it worked/was made. Once I figured this out I began going to the thrift stores and buying old drills, computers, radios, what ever, for him to take apart. He is very mechanically inclined and can stare at something for hours just like I can trying to figure its inner workings out. I am encouraging him to head towards mechanical engineering degree for college, instead of being a mechanic like me. I think he would like it much better and besides he sees what I deal with day in and day out, and that is enough for him to not really want to pursure it as a career but more of a hobby. Then again it was a hobby for me at one time too. Now its just a dead end, sink or swim rat race Any way I think I will toss things around in my head a bit more and then come up with some type of game plan by thye end of this week. That way it is only 4 days into the school year and he has plenty of time to get motivated. Will keep you posted.

Brat as a motivator (long post)
Thanks for the respones thus far. As far as the all A's and B's thing, I feel that he is perfrectly capable of doing so. It is just that he has a hard time staying motivated and on task because he would rather srew off and do his own thing. But like I said last year was a great year. He even got student of the month a couple of times. It is just really hard for me to monitor any more when he does not live with me. So I the only way I can tel if he is really trying is to see his grades. Perhaps I could get the teachers phone numbers and call them periodically and find out what they observe with him in the class room. And yes I would rather have my boys show up when they say they and hold tru to the values I have attempted to teach them, and not be swayed my the newest fad or craze. I really like the dangling carrot idea. See with me it is either all on or all off. I hadn't thought of something like that. That might keep the "peace" a bit better. And give him time to mature more and also really decide if that is what he truly wants. If he doesn't then I can just "take it off his hands." By then it might a be and STI or some american muscle like his older brother wants. Which is ok either way in my book. But I tell you what I would rather see him in a brat then a STI, I know how our family is and that is just asking for it. Either way it will be hard to get, and not turn it into a straight axle mega lifted trail only ride. But I am willing to make the sacrifice for him.

Brat as a motivator (long post)
Ok so my 13 year old son has been wanting a brat for about 4-5 years or more now. And with him helping me with my wagon project and just plain hanging around us "subaru guys" his motivation is way up there to get something. He saves every litle amount of money he can, and is putting it towards "his project." I have found a nice 86 brat that the guy is pretty much letting go just because it has taken space up in his drivaway for quite some time now. I am going to buy it one way or the other but here is the crux of the thing. I really would like to use it as a motivational tool for him (provided I can keep my hands off it ) He struggles a bit with school (he would rather be outside or working on something) but last year he did really well. So I was thinking I might do one of two things. A: buy it and have it sitting here in the drive way. And tell him if he gets all A's & B's this year the brat is his to start working on next summer. My thinking is with the brat in canstant view it will keep him motivated. B: Buy the brat and hide it. Tell him if he keeps his grades all A's an B's I will double the money he has saved up and then help him buy a brat. Then what I would do for his birthday (in july) is give him the brat and let him use the money he has saved to get started on it. What would you guys do, or would you do something a little different? I know you don't know our family dynamics and or what makes my son tick so it will hard to give definit answers. But some input is greatly requested. Keep in mind he is only 13 and will have the next 2 years (by the time he gets the brat) to do what he wants. And also he is still in the stage (for a few more months any way) where some fuzzy little blonde winks at him he doesn't really pay too much attention. A lot can change in a year or so as we all know. Also who's to say he will want soemthing like this come summer of next year. And when he does start driving it or what ever, it will be his responsibility to pay for the gas and insurance, so that may be a different issue all together. Ok I have said enough, oh yea one last thing he lives with his mom through out the year (I raised him for the last 12 years though). About the Brat. It is an 86 4spd D/R with the fun tops. No rust, body is strait. The color is faded suabru extra black with some patina on the hood (the whole car just needs a good buffing) The EA81 has 200,000 and some change and has been sitting for the past three years. But when I went ot fire it up, it fired right off the batt and purred like a kitten, a little miss once in a while but not bad. he said he added about 5 gal of new gas to it. He is and elderly man that is semi retired and has had it for the past 15 years as his winter rig, but now he has too many other vehicles and does not need this one. He quit driving it because it failed emissions and then took it to a shop that gave him a grocery list of stuff that neede to be done to the engine, so he said forget it. Well it only has to go two more years before I don't need to worry about that here in Wa state. I figure we will keep it realiable and simple as my son needs it to get back and forth to high school and then possibly college. So not anything more than a 2-4in lift and thats about it. Leave the engine stock except a few things here and there (carb, exhaust, disty other minor stuff) Just basically make it a nice daily with some weeknd fun capabilites. NOW THE REAL QUESTION IS...CAN I KEEP MY OWN HANDS OFF IT AND NOT BUY IT FOR MYSELF Thanks in advance for your advise.

Need help on wifes 99' Outback/Legacy
Mugs replied to Latida's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDITTO except the axles. Aftermarkets ones work just as well and are way less then suby axles. I have replaced hundreds and have only had about a 1/2 dozen premature failures right out of the box in the past ten years of professional wrenching.

Underhanded dealership tactics
Mugs replied to GeneralDisorder's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIf you came to my suby shop, I would brake clean the crap out of the HG area, correctly install the H2O pump bypass hose, and replace the radiator and T-stat if needed. along with checking for proper fan operation first. And If it seemed as if maybe the T-belt and that is entaled with that needs replacing (this is done by me talking to you) I would recommend that. After that the next time you came in say for your oil change I would then look again at the heads, and if they looked the same, I would make a note of it, and tell you its not major but lets keep an eye out for it and be ready for it when it does if it does happen. but then again thats my shop and my way of doing things, and since you live in Portland and I am here in Spokane that is a long ways away to drive for a diag and oil changes Best of luck to you.

How to use sealant properly?
Mugs replied to cjd160's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSounds liek A: you used te wrong sealant. B: you did not prep the surface very well. I only use Ultra Grey....it is worth the extra cost trust me. Second brake clean the crap out of your sufaces after initial lceaning is done. I break out the micro pics, razor blades, and emery cloth or wheels on a lot of sealing surfaces. But that is because I hate "comebacks" it is money I am loosing.

Another suby build
Well I finally got an afternoon free today, so I took advantage of it. I put the rear discs on (thanks Steve W) ran new brakes lines (man those were spendy) because I did not like the way the hard lines came out, plus they rubbed the tires and or would not stay in a position to where catastrophic failure was sure to happen. Then I clearanced the rear fender wells a bit, and pulled the front fenders off, going to cut em' plus I need them off for the new wireing harness, then I pulled the front bumper in preperation for a beefy steel one to be built. She's almost drivable gettin' er cleaned up backing plate install, and all lubed up as well here come the rotors next the caliper asemblies now the brake lines I ran them inside of a 700x23 inner tube so they have a little more rub protection. And then through the "orginal" routing. I may tinker with this a bit more to see if I can't come up with something better. Gettin' nekid'

The Evans Creek Meet

Alternatives To Subaru Labeled Coolant?
Mugs replied to Bluestone's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYou get it from the dealership. It is supposed to aid in keeping things sealed up and keep things soft in conjuntion with the suby coolant. It looks sort of like stop leak but I think greatly improved to where it does not stop radiator cooling and heater corre heating Thats all I can really tell you. I add it as "butt covereage" for me, to my customers cars

Alternatives To Subaru Labeled Coolant?
Mugs replied to Bluestone's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe deal with Suby cooant is that is has "certain" properties that add in keeping seals, and other componants I.E. head gaskets from failing as bad as they used to. Anything after 2000 gets it. Anything before 2000 you can use "regualr coolant." But I always add the suby additive to any of my customers subies, that involved the taking out a mass of coolant. In my 96 I run regular with the additive. With the 85 EJ conversion same deal. And like I said earlier any of my 2000 and above customers I put the suby coolant in. And FWIT I prefer the Toyota long life coolant over Dex Cool I can get the Toyota long life at Carquest for about the sam price as DexCool. I can definitly tell the difference with the Toy and Suby coolant as compared to "regular" green coolant. It smells different, feels different, pours different, everything about it is different. As apossed to DexCool I really don't see much of a difference between it and the green stuff.

Another suby build
It wasn't a matter of fitting big tires in the wagon. It was a matter of building a trail rig. It just so happen to end up being a wagon. I knew what I wanted and did not really care (well I kind of did) what kind of suby I ended up building.

Rolling Tool Boxes....
Hey I really like that set up you got there. So neat and organized, with everything it is place. I love that big green "nut and bolt" cabinet you have on the left side. I am slowly working on getting my garage/shop looking like that, but first I need to get the mom in law stuff out, which is in the proccess. I know it does not happen over night, but it will happen eventually.

Rolling Tool Boxes....
I don't use and or buy anything SAE, that way I can tell the service writer "sorry don't have the tools for that." But now days I can't get away with it very well since most all cars are metric. So now I just say "sorry not going to work on that." And now that I am my "own boss" I can really say what and what I won't work on.

94 legacy wagon problems still
Mugs replied to seth3030's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHey this is just an after thought. But your cat may be starting go out/getting clogged. Thus it is loading up under hard accell and then "cooking" back off and clearing out after the "load" has gone away. Just a thought.

94 legacy wagon problems still
Mugs replied to seth3030's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXTry the HEET treatment (the water remover in the tank) also maybe a seafoam treatment. One in the tank, half a can in the crank case, and another fulll can through the intake. I made my own "delivery machine" with a 20 oz soda bottle some vinal tubing and an in line peck cock valve. Can take a pic and show you if you would like.

Rolling Tool Boxes....
Ya I thought abou those for a long time. But them wanted to be able to hold all my sockets which go up to 36mm and most of those peg style organizers only go to 27mm. Plus with impact wall thickness getting thicker in the larger sizes, don't let you put sockets on the next peg over. That is why I went with the magnetic mat for the sockets. yah they are spendy. But they (6s series) were on sale in the spring and also my Matco guy gave me a discount on top of that, so I got into it for about 2grand less then retail. I just could not pass it up, since I had been waiting for almost a year for them to go on sale just so I could afford one. Also when it how you make you money it is a "justafiable expense" plus I get to write it off on taxes

Bathust Lotus Race 16th to 1st in half a lap
Man that is some serious driving skill. Some of that was just a wee bit too close for my comfort. Thanks for the vid.

Rolling Tool Boxes....
Here some pics of my baby. It is a Matco 6s series (6225RX) with stainless steel top and custom drawer configuration, and loaded with MAC, Snap ON, Matco, and S&K tools. It took me ten years of wrenching to graduate into it this spring. My ulitmate box (the one I retire with) will be a triple bay with side lockers and a hutch. What I love about it is the two 4in deep full length top drawers. It keeps the bulk of my most used tools in them. I would have bought a Mac Maximiser over this one had they had the two full length 4inch deep drawers like this one. But all the have is a 4in and 2in configuration....Its in my garage now because I am laid off of work/staring my own suby shop after all these years. So mom in law's stuff hasn't been moved to the attic yet, but is going to be now. Because it sure is a pain to work in only one side of the garage especially when your project car is in the front of the bay. I don't really care for Snap On boxes. Just something about them I don't like. The drawers seem cheap and flimsy and I just don't like their over all construction, along with the fit and finish. But that is my opinion. And no I did not clean and organize it just for the pictures. My box looks like this 24/7 just ask Baccarruda and Monstaru. I am just like this by nature. Here is a peak at it and 3 of the drawers but they all are just as organized, But I figure I would spare you all the pics of all the drawers. My Old Tool box that I had right out of Tech School. Now it holds all my "switched out tools" and other miscelanious items.

Farewell my friend
Farewell my friend. You served my family well. When the boys were wee tots they had so much playing race car in you. You were going to be chopped, shaved, air bagged, ej22 conversioned, custom paint and interior. But then the enthusiasium died. The kids grew up, and I switched interests and car careers. So there you sat in a coner, neglected, un-loved, and forgoton about. But today, a new owner picked you up, and had the same love in his voice and on his face I once had for you for. And had for 20 years of your kind. "Your going straight to the shop" where another family is going to give you the love you once recieved from us. But rest assured, the contrubution made today will be thus put into the "stomper" in fact you have provided the final funds for the "completion" of it. So thank you and may you serv your new owner well. This one is not mine but gives you a better idea of what it is/could have been

side project...........
Looks great man. Can't wait to see it run and drive. Also I have an extra ea82 shifter if you need it. It may fit a bit better then trying to "retro fit" the ea81. Just a thought. Any way it looks great dude. Can't wait till we all can run together at the ORV park for some "break in" runs.
