Subaru 1400 from Portugal!!
Zefy replied to Billyjoe's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
wow thats hard to read... really nice car! how many k's does it have on it??? you can get mudflaps from a mechanic!?! i'm so impressed... the most i can get is a confused stare... -
welcome! i looked into this... ok there is no such thing as a top mounted starter on an 1800 engine... i went and found the only 81 brat in the area and took a look... if you can get the bellhousing to fit then you're half way there... you also need the belly pan from and 1800... or fab something to make it fit... the mounting points aren't the same from what i saw...

Finally, a picture of my Brat
Zefy replied to YellowSub's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
that sounds to complicated for the 70's... i have only seen 2 brats(besides mine) that were actually sold here and i have heard of many more... all were gen 1's... i have talked to about a dozen people who bought them new and i asked them (most of them) if they had the targa on them... all of them said no... so i would say that it is specific to region just because not all the dealerships had them as an option... -
or a city block... just think of the sound system that would acompany it! oh ya its got a 2 120" subs with 50,000,000 watts rms... ok i'm thinking to much... you think it would fit between the wheel wells?

But hey... its going to be RWD... thats a shame... but its still going to be SWEET... so is this your car? what other sweet rides do you have???(beside the brat!) -

sweet! so this is what you do all day??? need an intern? assistant? shop boy?? i'm there! -
well said... now that i think about it, doing jobs for other people is a small part of his work(the repetative stuff... bumpers, small lifts, all that stuff)... a larger part(in my mind) is his experimenting... just think of all the stuff he has contributed to the advancement of subies??? he has made the d/r for the new gens, custom bumpers for the new gens, LSD in the front diff, and of course the ea to ej conversion kit! a pile of his work is just finding out if something is possible... i can remember hearing john tell me about some new conversion then a month later seeing others doing the same thing... when others say something can't be done John seems to be first in line to challenge it... not to many people wanted to sell me their brat's (when i was looking and before i was on the board) in the states due to shipping and all that... i phone him and he says "ya sure..." a few months later we meet in seattle at erics and make the deal... so ya... if you find somebody else to do all the things that he does then great... but if you can't, then just lay off... see you at the show!
-
ya sometimes he is hard to get a hold of... but can you blame him??? he's got his own suby shop as his small business and he's got 5(i think) kids to look after... and ,unless your willing to wait a while, don't e-mail him... he is much better when you phone him... i have never had any problems with john and getting parts... he gets them as quickly as possible, gives me a fair price, and helps me with any problems i've been having... in fact he has talked me through entire repairs on more then one occasion! ussually taking around an hour to explain... he even guided me through a repair while on his way, in the snow, to pick up his wife who, unfortunatly, drove into a ditch... he talked to me right up to the point he had to get out to see her... he even fixed me up a knuckle for the front axle in my brat... put it fresh barings, greased by him and wrapped in saran to keep it from rusting... unfortunalty it got lost in the mail... i got a letter from Canada post saying so... now my problems are with the shipping company(USPS and Canada Post)... every part has taken me more then 2 weeks to get and sometimes they don't come at all... He did the same for me! except he forgot the paper work for the car so mailed it to eric(i think) and my parents picked it up when they got the car a week after meeting him... but all is well! there are only about 5-6 people i trust with my car... and John is at the top of the list! he gets two thumbs up with 5 stars in my books!

i have yet to actually get my brat on the road but its planned to be used as a daily... since i have no other car... some people wonder why i bother working on my car constanty instead of buying a newer car... my parents even were willing to buy me a honda or something because my brother got one for free from my grandma... i'm still wonder why i refused... i could have gotten it then sold it and bought another suby!:-p i don't think my parents would go for that though... But ya! my brat is a daily(or soon to be!)... and its got 156k on the clock(i'm pretty sure the odo has rolled over once)...
-
haha ya... move... maybe later... maybe when i'm out of highschool... i plan on never having to do an inspection again...(so no buy any cars from the states...) nah i don't want to move... Vancouver was voted second best place to live in the world! the #1 spot is in sweden i think... and AND... the Coquitlam water shed apparently is some of the cleanest river water in the world... SO HA... I'm not going anywhere!:-p well there was indeed a strange sound when i drove down to the shop... i even told them about it... they didn't do anything... and wouldn't it be kinda obvious if there was a 12 pack of beer sitting in the back of a brat?
-
thats what i think... and since my brother got my parents to pay for his insurance on his honda because of school and work conflicts... so if i get a job my insurance is payed for!!!(my insurance is going to cost 1700-1800... ) and since i spent all of my money on the repairs, this is indeed a sweet deal... just in time for summer and the SHOW!!! yay!!! 46 more days!!!

my 79 and all its greatness!!! PICS! 56k BEWARE!!!
Zefy replied to Zefy's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
i just figured it out too... here is how i do it... go to your pictures page and click on the picture to make it as big as possible... then i right-click and go to properties then i copy the exact URL... then i click on the little picture icon (the one beside the # icon) in the toolbar above the letterbox(the thing you type in) then i paste the URL into that window then click OK or whatever... thats it... AHHHH:eek: ... stay away... you know... there are lots of pics... that many pics may take a while on a 56k??? i think... i can't remember what the name of the paint is... John(mudrat79) calls it rat piss yellow... its a stock colour... just a newer coat... as for the fog lights... both are broken... the lens covers are gone and the bulbs are broken... they wouldn't be hard to repair... my buddies dad runs a plastic buisness... i could score some scraps and make covers then replace the bulbs...i got some old jetta fog lamps too... they are all cheapies... not really worth saving... but all 4 of those lights i got on for around 40-50 bucks... -
i shopped around for the tie rods myself... and i found them for about the same price as you guys but unfortunatly the availability was low and would have to be shipped to me... it would take to long so i gave in and payed the extra price... but hey! my car is LEGAL!!! w00t!!! as for the drive through liquor stores... thats just sad... i was baffled when i saw beer at 7/11 when i went to the states... here you can only buy liquor at you know... LIQUOR STORES...
-
i wouldn't do it... and think... if you feel you need the 4WD engaged when going that fast then you should probably be driving slower... just my thoughts...

Zefy replied to captainkettel's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's

my 79 and all its greatness!!! PICS! 56k BEWARE!!!
Zefy replied to Zefy's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
whoa his brat is NICE... its going to be mighty stiff indeed... i like his role bar and brushguard... i've been trying to get those for a while... -
So ya... today my 79 brat came back from the shop... new inner tie rods installed... and now my brat is LEGAL!!! YUP... i can get insurance on it now... w00t!!! only took me a year and a half!!! so ya... i'm gonna show some pics in cronological order from how i got it and how it is now... here we go! this pic is from when i just got it home from Seattle and after taking off the canopy and washing it a little... notice the ugly hub caps and broken fog lights... Well there was lots of stuff i did to the car in between now and when i got it and there is a list here: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=36990 But here are the new rims i got on the car about a month ago... centercaps yet to come(still polishing!) and today i just got it back from VI(vihicle inspection) and i got some pics of my new stuff... mainly the inner tie rods... Shinny ain't em??? was it worth 750 you think??? hehe and see this means my car is legal! i have to leave it on for 1 year... but meh... And now that my car is legal my first act is to put ilegal lights on it! yay! here are shots inside the car with the stock lights on(including highbeams) then with the new lights... Okay i'll be lucky to see a airplane on the street with these lights... NOW for the big guns! [/url] i'd say thats pretty good for 60 bucks and a couple hours! and you can see my new windshield wipers! pretty! and now just an overall shot of the car now... So what you think?
-
i think your in luck Mick... mine looks exactly the same and the other is pretty darn close... the one on the left is the same as yours and when i took it out there was no slop in the screw... the second is off an older carb i think... its got no auto choke or anything and its very plain... its yours if you want it... i'm sure i can just pop it in an letter and send it to you...

Towing a 79 4WD with a tow bar
Zefy replied to cricket's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
just make sure its in neutral... a guy towed a sami behind a motor home while the car was in 1st... went up to like 20000rpm... not good...as long as its not an automatic you can tow it as far as you want...
