its not just the drivetrain you have to worry about... the braking of the vihicle is important... even though the brakes on the new gens are great they might not be ideal for heavy loads... also the frame, suspension and all is taking a load... it would/could cause premature wear... most likely the low rating is for warrenty purposes... i'm sure it can tow more but it also increases the chances of it breaking... i wouldn't do it... the driveline has a very small chance of affecting the tow rating... because the don't change much... it most likely some strengthening of the frame or something that has changed...

need to know how to put a xt6 engine in my 85 brat
Zefy replied to ducktapetim777's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
check out www.subarubrat.com ... he has done it and taken some pretty good pics and details on how to do it... -
i like em... pretty much all of the terrain in the US warrents having such tires as they have there... maybe in the northwest territories or something... airing out your tires a little will help... but since most of the snow i drive in is the slippery thin stuff that will send any car sliding in every which way if you so much as tap the brakes i just don't go driving... but hey i would really like to give one of those a try! and hey... don't stir the pot to much... or else you might fall outa the pot... or perhaps get pushed...

this month has been a good month for me and my brat... for starters i got a free set of wagon wheels last month and finished sandblasting and painting them this month and am in the middle of mounting them right now... second, i got one of those giant canopies (10ftx20ft) for my car and some other things... so my car will stay dry when not in use! finally!!! i drove my car also... first time in almost 4 months... got my axle, barings, center nut and thottle cable replaced... it was a biatch to get all the stuff... it took such a long time... lost the parts in the mail and all this crazy stuff... thanks Jeff(one eye) for saving me and my lack of parts... it drove really well... besides some idle problems it ran great... even took it to the sand pits a little... and last(this is more for me then the car) i found a screaming deal on pioneer subs... 50 bucks Canadian got me a brand new sub that costs 90 bucks US... there was a bigger one for the same price but it was too deap to fit in my brat...(130 bucks US for the other one... i really wanted to have it but it wouldn't fit...) http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/product/detail/0,,2076_4061_10473921,00.html thats the one that i got^^^... this is the one that didn't fit but was the same price...\/ \/ \/ http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/product/detail/0,,2076_4059_35354,00.html i will try and get pics and a movie(me doing reverse donuts) of my other spoils later on... but all this was to good to not share... later all,

oddly enough my parents 95 isuzu rodeo didn't come with cupholders either... and it has a dish under the e-brake handle... and a big flat spot over the glove compartment... hmmmm... i've had stuff fly out the window when i turned corners... not fun... as for cup holders... we got this slick thing that looks like an oversized glasses case... with doube sided tape on the bottom... we stuck it right in the middle of the dash... it folds open and you have 2 nice cut holders... not too tacky... and they work good... i'll see if i can get a pic... this cup holder wasn't cheap though... its high quality...

Is your Subaru dealer competent?
Zefy replied to PictureChasers's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i've given up on the dealerships... they a bunch of idiots... well the guys at wolfe aren't bad but the guys in richmond are idiots... all i deal with now is the certified suby repair place near my house... they don't mind getting there hands off the keyboard and into the backroom with the books and microfilms... everytime i ask the dealership they want a VIN... well my 79 brat doesn't have the 13 digit VIN that we have all grown used to... i even tell them, "the VIN won't work... its 10 digits..." they insist that i get it... the guys at the repair place know what kinda car i got and know where to look and give me a straight answer at the beginning... no jumping hoops... if i were you i would find one of these places... oh also... dealers don't know anything... they left the battery ground disconnected on the 01 legacy after a clutch job... -
and you have to protect an oil and grease covered work bench from glass ring stains why? i want some too...
-
and hey just a thought... do you have your boating licence? anything over 10hp that is a water craft will have to have a licenced driver... and i guess a amphibious car counts... if i were you i would make is as stock looking as possible... and not use it in any really public areas... but hey, your in Penticton so its not like anybody is going to see you... ahhh... fun...

hey all you guys on the island... you NEED to go to salt air recycling... i've never been but apparently they got 40 acres of subies... pure subies... i was actually planning on going in the summer sometime...

Does Subaru void warranty (on engine) for TSD rally usage?
Zefy replied to PictureChasers's topic in Off Road
i recently did a TSD rally and i inquired about such things... since i used my parents wagon... no it doesn't void the warrenty... infact you don't need any extra insurrance things or anything to do it... in fact one of the guys who hosted the rally i went on did a rally with his brand new impreza like 2 days after he bought it... hadn't even made a payment yet! its a lot of fun... but its freaking hard... here are the results from mine... http://www.rallybc.com/archives/2005/Novice/2005WCRA_Novice1_Results.pdf second to last baby YA! w00t!!! and here are some pics! http://www.rallybc.com/photos/2005/Novice1/Dennis/2005Novice1Dennis1.html i was #14... you should so do it! and ya... its supposed to be 10% under the speed limit... people got so freaking mad... me going 45kph in a 50 zone where people usually go 80... -
1987 GL Wagon To Brat? Possible?
Zefy replied to Mysticcal's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i ahve a couple of pics of a wagon with the back roof chopped off leaving it more like a baja... in fact there was the thread about this a while back... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=19202&highlight=convert+wagon+brat+doors there it is... i have pics on my other comp... i'll try and get them later... its hard to see though because it has a cover on the back... its very do-able but be sure that you strengthen up thet back really good... because its a uni-body a bunch of strength comes from the roof... so cross-bracing and what not is important... and when you cut it, put in supports to makes sure the body won't bend... it'll really suck if you get it done then take it down the freeway and it is stuck with a slight turn to one side... -

ya subies are rare up here... i got my brat from OR... so not all are a scam... but in all my time of looking for a hatch that i would use for an off-roader(about a year) i have found only 4-5 that i would use... let me guess! the richmond dealership!!!! they are a bunch of stupid idiots there... i asked them what the phone # to a local subaru repair place was... big old subaru sign ourside the local place... says certified suby repairs... and they said to me, "there isn't a place there..." and i was all, "I was just there!" and they were, "NO it doesn't exist..." GRRRRRR....

Looking for 4x4 subaru -recommendations???
Zefy replied to bk2's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
he he he... John is such a salesman... he gives you the option of something fairly cheap then then goes, "OR you can get...!" its obvious now that you have to get the legacy... then give John a pile of money and two weeks... and you'll have your "dream"... good work john! -
those would look good too... but no thats not quite what i'm talking about...(your talking about fender flares that you install after trimming your fenders right???) no these flares replace the whole fender... they have a flare built into them and larger wheel openings... they look just like a factory fender just wider and have a larger diameter for the wheel... i saw it on "trucks!" on a ford ranger(EEEWWW) that was being made for pre-running... they looked real slick...

haha you just gotta make sure that the guy your hooking with the anchor can stop... leave the wee little civic alone and plow the anchor through a crappy ford truck or something... once the guy sees an anchor sticking outa his hook and you flailing your arms out the window of your soob yelling, "USE YOUR BRAKES!" he is bound to stop... -

Zefy replied to bk2's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
if your looking at using a trailer then you can't just look at the hp... lots of power and torque is no good if you can't stop... make sure your brakes can handle such loads... most people don't think about brakes when they tow stuff but its just as important(if not more) to stop then to go... -
