  1. i don't know its not my design... but from what i understand from when i was talking to him he added leaf springs... so he has 2 rear suby suspensions and leaf spings added to the "solid" axles... he topped it off by using wagon wheels! he uses it to haul around subies... this thing is as beafy as a cow... i'll look into it some more... if i were making a trailer i would just pop out the axles and bust off the stubs and use those... beafing up the suspension might be a good idea... the weight limit for gen 1's is 800lbs... if the low limit is due to the suspension (i think its brakes and engine that make it so low) then making it stiffer might be a good plan... although the tow rating is also 800lbs... so that makes me think its all engine and brakes... you might want to look into a way to get the drums on the rear of your trailer to be functional... there must be a trailer brake kit or something... i feel that stopping is more important then moving...
  2. that thing is gonna be sweet when its done... are you going to rebuild the engine because its been sitting so long??? a soft top is gonna be awesome! good luck!
  3. a friend of mine used suby suspension to make a trailor to haul other subies... what he did was take the 2 cv's and put them both in a pipe making a solid axle... i can take some pics of it if you like... but it won't be anytime soon... what i would do though is take out the axles and bust the stubs off then just put the stubs back into the hubs... i think that will work...
  4. anybody! somebody! save the brat! don't let them blow it up! get a huge group and go in there... make them SCARED!!!
  5. they went away from fully electric cars... because people didn't like to plug them in and because of the lack of storage because of the large amount of power cells... not to mention the weight... now with lithium ion cells it might be a little better but fully electric cars isn't going to happen anytime soon... just my guess anyway...
  6. for the rear i was just planning on using a straight tube and squishing the ends then drilling a hole in either end... then connect it to the tops of the shock mounts...
  7. scottbaru makes a good point... it believe it is because of the e-brake... now on your wifes new car the e-brake is in the rear... unlike the old subies... now the turning thing may have to be used on the rear just because of the e-brake... But! i also think that the e-brake doesn't use the rear disc... i recall somebody saying this... the e-brake has a seperate small drum brake inside/behind/somewhere the disc brake... its the same on isuzus... now i'm all interested... my does our 01 legacy have to be at the airport waiting for my mom to come back from salt lake... i miss the legacy... oh and my mom...
  8. ok so the previous owner of my brat did a horrible job making the jump seats removable... and since people actually use them i think there should be more then 2 bolts holding the darn things in... so i need to know some stuff... i have been looking at pics of the way the jump seats were installed from factory... the tabs welded to the seat bracket then the tabs welded to the bed... but the jump seats aren't laying right on the bed... the tabs hold it up... so i just want the measurement of that distance... i am trying my hardest to make the legal... and that means completely factory... i will most likely beaf up the thickness of the tabs but that is an improvement... so i can't see the vihicle inspection people disliking it... thanks everyone...
  9. i've been playing around with my car... you know... sit for a few hours taking things off and messing with stuff... and i noticed how easy it would be to put in a brace in the rear of my brat... tons of people at school and stuff use them and i've seen some pretty good results... i know the rear is a torsion bar suspension but would using a brace help to stiffen it up at all??? anybody done it??? the front is a harder one to deal with... with the spare tire sitting square in the middle of the strut towers... and no room to go overtop... i was thinking of just using that one when rallying or something along those lines and having the spare strapped down in the rear... because hey i don't want to be fumbling with a spare under the hood when i'm trying to meet a deadline... and for the rear... you wouldn't even be able to see it... it would be tucked really close to the jump seats... thanks all...
  10. the SVX was HOW MUCH?!?! was it really in the 50-70k price range???
  11. we just mix enough fuel to last the job that we are doing... the lawn mower is a tough cookie and can handle a little old gas... my dad was going to invent something to solve such a problem... but he stopped after failing to make a prototype... maybe i should bug him to get working on it... or maybe i should do it??? i too leave fuel for long periods of time... over winter without stabalizer... been using the same mower for probably 8 years... no problems... heck i don't even think the oil has been changed...
  12. the volvo crosscountry is almost a super nice carbon copy of an outback... now that AWD technology is becoming common they do have to do something different... with the B9 being the same thing 90% of other car companies already make... suby just isn't a big enough company(or just to darn slow) to keep up... toyota, honda, and nissan have the money to get things done... same goes for the domestic... with ford coming out with the 500 and the freestyle suby has some tough competition ahead... every car company is clueing into the AWD "era" but subaru was there over 10 years ago... they need something new and amazing to keep suby customers loyal... your right about the turbo thing... every model made my subaru has a turbo option... maybe they should stop thinking about that and maybe bringing in the B3(its the justy remake... thats what its called right?)... with suzuki getting there areo all AWD'ved up... i see tons of those cars here... ok its 2:20... i'm gonna go to bed...
  13. ok i don't know if i'm right about this... because i've only worked on old gen cars... but on those there is a pretty big notch in the middle of the piston... now this is the only car brand i know that does this... but what you have to do is turn it... a wrench ussually fits perfectly into the slot... turn it(can't remeber which way sorry... i would assume clockwise is in...) and it will go down... DO NOT try to compress it with a c-clamp... you will wreck it... now this is for the old gen cars... i don't know if its the same for your newer car... but i would hold off with the c-clamp until you get some more feedback... but ya... hope it all goes well...
  14. if what your talking about is the tie-rod (thats the arm that moves back and forth to turn the hub which in turn turns the car) and the halfshaft is the axle/CV joint/ thing that makes car move... then no they shouldn't be that close to each other... i have a pic but you can't really tell the distance between the 2... i'll take a pic tomorrow but just so we are all on the same page its these parts your talking about right??? the "shaft" is the one in front and hidden behind it is the "halfshaft"... don't worry your grammer is fine... we're not trying to write a novel here... take a pic if you can... so we can all see what the h*ll you have done to your poor car...
  15. my mommy and daddy pay for my cell phone... because they love me... so for me... a cb is more money... just because i have to go out and buy one in the first place... free is cheaper then a cb... unless the cd is free to buy??? anybody got a free one kickin' about???
  16. i personally love my parents 01 legacy... they feel somewhat different about it though... i just love how its a legacy L but it still has a bunch of stuff you could only find on a high priced version of something else... it's cool when people pulled up beside me with a civic or mustang or something along those lines and i blow them away... and i am driving a freakin' family wagon with a tweety hanging in the back window... the acura TSX was a tie... i was beside him the whole time... there are some things that aren't cool about that car though... like how the blinkers don't work... well they do but you have to fidget with it to get it to work... and the thing were it pops outa reverse... i checked on alldata and its a common problem with the 5mt's from 01... those 2 things makes my dad not really like it... oh and an exaust leak... it sucks for me because i'm not supposed to drive it anymore... they took the insurance off it for me because i got the brat insured... i miss going fast... haha... the brat is a blast though...
  17. it seems like a solid idea... except for the whole oil thing... thats BS... its also extremely complex... i've heard of people having tones of problems working with rotary engines... this is 10 times more complex in my mind... some serious testing will have to be done... other then that i think its pretty cool... anybody going to put a few bucks down for investing???
  18. can't i just go to my toyo store and get a set??? i'm pretty sure there is one at the bottom of the hill i live on... and on the web site it says they only come in 175/70 and 185/70... i'll look into it tomorrow... maybe... if i remember... i'm probably going to go with some nice mud and snow tires that a guy gets from the factory... 60 bucks a piece is a darn good deal for a set of good snow tires... way better then my kumho...
  19. Morgan covered off a bunch of stuff... enough parts to build a new suby... i don't do a bunch of off-roading but anytime i go on an outing i always bring a camera!!! i always bring a cell phone too... just in case... even though in most off-road places they don't work... but i can't afford a cb so thats what i use... and even though this almost never happenes... (especially on a suby) i have a bar of dove soap with me... no its not so i can keep my hands baby soft(although they are) you can use it to patch a leaking gas tank... i don't know how it works but i know dove is the only one you can do it with... although jb weld can fix that too can't it??? and last... i always carry around my LED flashlight(seriously i have it on me right now)... using a normal flashlight makes lots oh heat and can ignite things if it breaks... while an led light creates almost no heat and uses too little wattage to create a decent spark... thats it for me...
  20. here is my pic... this was at wcss7...
  21. Hey Derekho55, where you at in BC??? after you get your ride we should take it on a little trial experiment before you mod it up... would deffinatly say go with mudrat79's stuff... he knows his stuff... as for the choice of vihicle... i wolud go with a forester... just because they are a foot shorter then the outback/legacy...
  22. the first time i did it it took me 3 months... but i had to do the barings too...:-p well some of that i was waiting for a replacement axle, then time to order barings from the dealership... then some tinker time... but after taking it apart and putting it back together multiple times i can do it in around 30-45 minutes...
  23. the best place i know where you can go where there are a varied ability levels of trails is stave lake... i have never been there myself but i've heard very good things... http://www.bcfroa.bc.ca/british-columbia-map/92/2/2/1#x stave is the lake on the far right near the bottom... zoom in to get a better idea of where it is... the map should also give you a good idea of how far away it is... as far as the rest of it goes... i can look into other places...
