+1 on the XT. Driving 70 miles everyday in my 4wd XT get me an average of 30 mpg.

Not at all. How would anything hit the belts? the are protected in the front by the radiator, the car itself protects the sides, and how would a rock jump straight up?

You should put some cross bars on the front and back down low to keep short stuff from sliding out and to hold light tabs

So the big thing about this car, is, that its a turbo. Those motors blow head gaskets so easily if they are even a teaspoon low on antifreeze. Other than that, you will have a reliable car, unless there is rust. Rust around the rear wheel wells is normal, but check underneath the car, a little bit is ok.

You never want to drive on a public road with roof lights turned on. The cop let me off with a warning, but not everyone is so lucky. Normally i drive my wheeler wagon with the stock lights on, as well as the 4 lights that are mounted on the bumper and have never been highbeam flashed by other drivers.

What size tire is that? You dont want to go over a 30" tire or bad things will happen

Ok i got the "new" alternator and everything seems to be working. I had a jump pack attached to the battery overnight so it was not completely dead. Also, i did not use electrical tape to make connections, i used it to insulate the ends of wires that didn't go anywhere after i cut them down to the insulation. I guess I'll see what happens next

You can also let the rusty thing soak in straight vinegar. It takes the rust right off with some minor wire brush action.

So i was driving my '88 XT to school this morning, which is a 40 mile commute one way from LaConner to Bellingham. About 2/3ds of the way there my alternator craped out. i barely made it into the parking lot before my battery died. This was a junkyard replacement alternator that i installed a week ago after the original alternator died. Yesterday, most of the important fuses popped halfway to school at 7:30 in the morning while i was driving 70 on the freeway during rush hour. I lost the parking lights, head lights, turn indicators,dash lights, wiper; pretty much everything that a person needs while driving when it is dark and raining. i am an auto student at tech school and my teacher let me fix it at school. I found the whole wiring harness behind the radio had been hacked apart and i am guessing that all of the wires touched and then grounded out. i electrical taped all the lose ends and frayed wires and that seemed to fix it. Except for the radiator fan which melts fuses because it draws 18 amps through a 15 amp fuse. I have to catch the bus to mount vernon now so i will finish this later damn car i missed the ******* bus FML so the XT still has some issues to work out. What would cause the radiator fan to draw that much power? Should i replace it? Would the cluster**** wiring disaster cause all those fuses to blow? I'm hoping that the replacement alternator died because of old age. I ordered a lifetime warrenty reman through my school so i get it for shop price. But i havent had any luck with remanufactures; I went through 5 reman alternators in two weeks on my '85 wagon, and it is sitting at home with a dead alternator still.

Unplug the radiator fan wire and find the wire that is hot. (yellow?) then plug it back in and cut the other side. Then attach another piece of wire and ground it out. Instant full time radiator fan!

For your roof rack question, the sides of my rack are about 1 1/2 inches tall. I keep two 27" spares up there that are held down with a ratchet strap apiece. Getting the tires up and down are not that hard, I am 5' 8" and can easily load and unload them.

Does anyone know what wire behind the radio controls the power seat belts? I was in the process of putting a new radio in, and now the seat belts don't slide back and forth. The whole wiring harness is hacked apart by the po so weird stuff happens every now and then

The diff lock is for the center. You "could" make it into an offroader, but they are harder to get parts for when you break something. All our lift kits are made by board members, and they are not hard to make at all if you have basic tools. Also, this car does not have a dual range transmission so wheeling it would mean roasted clutches every time.

I bolted through the stock bumper mounts. Works great. I hope that gives you an idea

What is the best way to clean out a pushbutton shifter knob without damaging any internals? I just got my XT running and i need to detail it. And i need to have 4wd

I fixed my non running '88 XT 4wd non turbo into a driving car! I am so glad i don't have to drive my loyale anymore.

What you do is use the 500 dollars to buy an EA82 with 2 parts cars. When you blow a motor in the rod-throw-o-rama just throw in your extra motor and your good to go for the next event
