A/c.... Can It Be Done!?!?!
'84 Flat-Four replied to RdNkBrt's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I feel your pain! I am in the same boat, my 84 GL had its a/c ripped out (incl. heater:confused:)... Due to $$$, I am contemplating aftermarket units (under-dash kits). a/c is my current goal going into the summer... Here's a good thread with links... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=89869&highlight=conditioner $500-700 average, so it seems, depending on the vendor... but once you find a unit you like, just type it into google-shopping and see who carries it for less... But i would imagine the testing would be the same once all rigged up... If you do decide to do this... keep us updated... Best of luck! Btw, anyone have an aftermarket under-dash unit? if so, your thoughts? -

Had this thread started as a link to GT replacements.... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=97429 So questions have arisen: Are there any differences between 84 & 85 gas tanks? Can an '85 GT replacement work on my 84 gl 4x4 (as long as the replacement is 4x4 spec'd)? Or at least make it work? My options seem to be JY (all rusted, but less than mine), dealer (big $$), radiator shop, or diy treatment. If this $76 gas tank can work for me... ... holy smokes, talk about making my day! please advise...

High Mileage On E81 Subies
'84 Flat-Four replied to roadsubiedog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
285K but not many Soobs out here in JYs. However, I am beginning to think that my EA81's 103K is really 103K plus 999,999... How many get turned over? -

Nice man! There's nothing like the desert! Amazing place... i miss it very much... It's cool to see you enjoying it with the whole family. Even cooler that Scooby didn't give you any problems. Kind regards, Fred -
Very good to know GeneralDisorder... thanks. In this case it was set up incorrectly as 3,1,2,4. While I did do it myself, I really didn't. If it weren't for you guys and your input, I wouldn't have been so persistent & determined. Words can't express how thankful I am for your willingness to share & help. Going for a drive...

Wow, what a difference. Small DIY sandblaster or a heavy-duty rig? -
    She's ALIVE!!!!!!! That simple little message with the numbers,... no it didn't confuse me, it clarified everything for me... I unbelievably overlooked the simplest of things. I had a neighbor help me last weekend, and that's when the wires must have been switched. I never bothered to double-check our work, until I read your message. Something didn't seem right, and when I went with your disty diagram, "suck, squish, and BANG" happened! Unbelievable! That banging on the highway must have been the FP. But with the wires all wrong, it never fired, new FP or not... Well, the silver lining is, now I know the Soob much better now. Carb is super clean, I don't need to drop $ on a new carb, spend money on towing or money for a mechanic, know how to check timing, rebuild carb,etc.,etc., etc....

Further troubleshooting has revealed the following: 1) I found that wires No. 1 and No. 3 were reversed. No. 2 & No. 4 were properly run. 2) Pointing the disty rotor to No. 1 plug, the flywheel is WELL after. I then turned to have flywheel TDC, and the disty rotor points to No. 4 plug. 3) I think the vacuum/retard unit (attached to disty) is shot. I can move the arm manually & rather easily, but sucking on the hose does not actuate the arm at all. Everything I've read indicates that if it cannot hold vacuum, then it should be replaced. Questions: Can a failed vacuum unit cause "death while cruising" as I described above? Could the car have run for a week with the wires improperly run (#1 & #3 reversed)? Should I correct timing by rotating the disty to have rotor pointing to No. 1 plug while TDC? Btw, I have a late Hitachi (electronic) breakerless disty. Also, the mechanical advance works fine; disty shaft has zero play side-to-side. I think I've provided all info I can think of for now. No compression test done yet (no $$ for another week or so). But does the above make sense to you all?

Federico ('84 Flat-Four) TRANSLATION: Hello emigl10! (sorry for my written Spanish- it’s not the most perfect, but I’ll try…) My name is Fred, but here I am ’84 Flat-Four. I am first-generation American. My family is from Argentina. I live in New Jersey with my wife Sarah. I like to say that I have Argentine blood coursing through me!! When I was in the Marine Corps, I learned of the incredible capacities of the Subaru. There’s nothing like the desert with its uncultivatable land to demonstrate the capacities of these impressive machines. It would be years later that I would have the opportunity to purchase one for myself. I recently came across an '84 (GL wagon, 4-speed, 4x4). I fell in love with it immediately! http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/...ad.php?t=97238 What do you think? Please do not take it the wrong way with the number of welcomes you received here. Like Loyale 2.7 Turbo says, the majority of members here speak and write in English. It’s challenging for me to write in Spanish (it’s evident, no? ), put it makes me happy to hear that I have Latin American brothers here on the board. Please don’t go too far for this reason. Without a doubt, these folks are fabulous, dedicated to helping anyone with problems and friendly to all who are passionate about their Subarus. Welcome, Fred (’84 Flat-Four)

I'm in South Jersey & am in the same boat. Searching old threads I came across svxpert as a possibility (i think in deptford). I PM'd him but haven't heard back. Anyone know is he works on older soobs? or is willing to, or still has his shop? Svxpert, if you read this, I am not looking for free service. I just want to know that my cash is going to a knowledgeable and honest mechanic.

Great info with links. I'm not there yet, but will be re-visiting this when the time comes.
