  1. they were shaft spacers, with a set screw on one side, not really sure how to describe them other than spacers with 5/8 holes that were 1/2 thick ill try to get you the part numbers, but ill be out of town all day tomorrow wheelin my beast
  2. aside from the different spline count everything else is the same. some of the axles are thicker but that really has no effect. i had a turbo car with a non turbo trans, everything was a direct swap. just make sure you have the right ratio rear diff why would you want a low mileage trans? the dual range i had in my turbo wag had over 400k before it locked up. and i would beat it mercilessly. im talking 6k clutch dumps in 4 low on pavement,
  3. i have the same rack an i just dropped it 3/4" so maybe i can do more if need be.
  4. i find rinsing it in a river is a good way to get rid of salt, also mud keeps the salt away,
  5. i still shift my car at red line, 7k or so in first, just to get my lumbering beast up to safe road speeds, plus without the muffler it pops and back fires and it makes me happy. after first i will usually shift at around 4500 depending on if i need to go any faster. there is nothing better than driving a slow car fast, i could smoke most of these wrx's in the snow just because i can drive and i aint scared to put it in the snow bank.
  6. it worked very well, i havent taken the car and beat on it yet but they seem to be holding up. i was teaching the gf to drive stick and she bucked the car pretty hard a few times and all is holding together. ill have to get a part number from the spacers i got but i got the half inch spacers and then a large washer on either side, they equaled about 3/4" drop. my car is however an 85 ea82 with manual steering and i have steering shaft with a slip joint, even so it only moved about 1/4" you could easily obtain that from just loosening the clamps on the shaft. as for how the car handles, its like night and day, i dreaded driving my car on the road and over the past year or so i ruined my 2 front tires, and those are not cheap tires. but now it has very good road manners and it even seems faster now, but that might just be because i can put the power down without the front end jumping up and down from wheel hop.
  7. The steering was actually easier for a while but I suspect I have damaged somethimg because it has increased quite a bit. Im thinking its the strut tops or the ball joints or maybe even the rack got some dirt in it. I have the parts already just not the time
  8. i put some half inch spacers between the subframe and body. it made a world of difference. i got them from ace, they were like 2.75 a peice
  9. More news on my beast, the accord springs and 4 runner struts is the best mod i have done to this car yet, with just the springs and struts the rear is at the perfect height without the lift brackets. they bottom out right before they rub. i also finally spaced the front subframe down about 3/4" jut unbolted it and put some spacers and washers and bolted it back up it drives almost like a normal car now. and lastly it now has a propperly welded diff because i managed to explode the open diff, pretty sure i managed to blow the spider gears. what you dont see is the 5' deep hole my drivers tire is sitting in,
  10. LIFT it. and for inspiration heres a pic of my old lifted 87 turbo wag
  11. if you want the DOJ on both ends look up the axle for an 85 sohc gl or 85 ea82. the reman i got works great. oreillys pn# http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/MPV0/607034/01424.oap?year=1985&make=Subaru&model=GL&vi=5012095&ck=Search_cv+half+shaft+%21s%21+axle+shaft_5012095_3911&keyword=cv+half+shaft+%21s%21+axle+shaft
  12. 85 ea82 wagon 2" lift. i was told i can do 5/8" without an issue by my friend Bodey, he used to wheel with the washington crew but is now here in ak. anyways i picked up some half inch spacers and some washers which should equal about 5/8. my car is the manual rack.
  13. id go with the 4 runner strut upgrade also. it will be about 2" lift and stiff. i keep alot of crap in my car and im sitting on virtually no suspension with the stock coils with the 4 runner struts. im going to get the honda coils soon and after i remove the rear strut lift it should be about perfect.
  14. check your intake pipe from maf to turbo. when mine was bad it would do things like this
  15. the weight and ground clearance. these cars get alot of ground clearance when they are lifted. about 15" at the diff with 30" tires. plus they dont weight as much so they dont sink, plus they have a very low center of gravity. also they are pretty much smooth on the bottom so they drag themselves through stuff that SAS rigs get stuck.. i have made some pretty beefy trucks look bad
  16. my mpg dropped a bit like 5mpg, but i have a gutless carbed wagon and i have to floor it to get up to speed. with the extra umph of SPFI you shouldnt notice too much change.
  17. my bad, i thought you were the guy in my area with a blue wagon..
  18. havent i told you about DC subaru? he has every part you could need in wassilla. also im interested in that weber as well.
  19. yeah what they all said. dual range is the way to go plus the loyales are a little more stripped out than the GLs. less options and such. luckily mines bassicly a dl except it has power mirrors and a dual range, so its pretty light too. i got no power nothing not even steering. in 1st low with 29" tires my carbed(less hp) 86 wagon will climb up some pretty steep stuff. steeper than jeeps can manage without flipping backwards. 5th low tops at about 50 very very worth it. and its actually not very hard. i dropped 2 and installed one in less than 8 hrs with minimal help/
  20. Well I'm going to zombify this thread as i have good news!! this car is actually mine now. i was just holding on to it for my brother who bought the car and the tires. but now i bought him out on it and this car is all mine now. plans are still the same. NEW ENGINE. this car is getting so gutless. so im on the look out for a SPFI motor to weberize and deltafy. already put in a snorkel, and i upgraded the rear struts to the 98 4 runner units, and tonight i just bought 86 accord coil springs for the back as well. i keep my tools on the back of the car and it bottoms out pretty easily. i think im going to trade out the monroes i put in for a set of kybs
  21. the ea82 is good as a well maintained stock engine. ive had a couple and even a turbo and never had any serious problems. if you want something cheap and easy to mod pick up a ford 2.3 turbo or a chrysler 2.2/2.5 turbo. those have lots of room left for tire smoke.
  22. been there done that. mostly when i drive up a near vertical hill, then back down it. or when i drift it to the point where the back of the car is in front and manage to pull it back.
  23. sounds like the maf acting up, or the intake pipe leaking.
  24. i noticed a lack of power when i put a 2.5" snorkel on my lifted wag. but then i also have a gutless carbed car. so i put a sort of disconnect in the engine bay. when i hit the trail i connect it up. the power loss wasn't too bad but it made the highway even more unpleasant.
