  1. Judging by the noise it sounds like either the alternator belt broke or the pulley seized/fell off. Either way you're in for a new alt/belt...glad to hear you made it across the highway safely.
  2. Later ones did, I know for sure mid-'88 (my dad's MY89 wagon) on up to my mom's '91 Loyale wagon both had flathead bolts instead of break-offs. It's easier to take off the lock than the whole column especially if it's got a tilt wheel. (the tilt actually makes it easier to get the lock bolts off, but harder to undo the column plastic.)
  3. Either a very short or very long handled flathead screwdriver with a 90º bend (so that the tip is vertical when the handle is horizontal--you know what I mean) will also do the trick and will go easier on the threads than a chisel. In a pinch I've used a good amount of WD-40 (or Trizol if you can get it), a dime or penny and a set of bent-nosed pliers as well. Good luck!
  4. Congrats, Trent looked like he was having fun that last roadtrip
  5. So is she good to go? And how's your gas mileage on winter-mix? My mileage dropped from low 40s with summer gas to high 20s on 10% Ethanol with anti-ice. Andrew
  6. I don't know but I have a set of Justy FSMs en route in the mail. JustyPimp, Meeky Moose or RenaissanceMan might know of the top of their heads. Or try the Justy board. What color is this Justy and what's it got going for it? I might be interested in adding a 2-door to my fleet when you're done with it.
  7. It'll fit, but if it's carbed you'll regret it. The FI Justy engine is a much better performer and is more reliable on- and off-road. Also as long as the engine is out, replace the oil pump, they're notorious for going south when you least want them to...
  8. I saw a used-car review on the Drive section of smh.com.au that specifically mentioned the availability of headlight washers and how they helped in bush driving.
  9. Doesn't sound any more stringent than Mass. inspections...sometimes they'll let surface rust through, sometimes not. It depends on the inspector. Aren't Japanese inspections for the main purpose of keeping the auto companies in business? Having been to both Japan and NZ, there are no junk cars in NZ, no old cars in Japan and nothing that runs is underutilised in Australia I just wonder why anyone would want to take the washer nozzles off.
  10. It's not even original!! I was expecting an old-lady garage queen...but he's had it totally redone with reproduction and non-original parts.
  11. Then bring the Baja. Or, if you feel up to it, drive to my place, and we can swap cars--I'll go through hell in the Brat for most of the trip and you can enjoy the (relative) suptuous luxury of my Justy;) Join us if you can; it's not about the cars but the people.
  12. My '87.5 XT GL-10 Turbo FT4WD has them. Also, Aussie domestic upper-model wagons had them, I didn't see a single touring wagon in Australia that didn't have washers.
  13. Jon, I didn't say there was anything wrong with it...I do everything you do except the selling bit.
  14. Mary, don't worry, he won't take your advice, Jon's driveway has more turnover than the Chevy dealer down his street:grin: But do tell me--just what's wrong with having a bunch of pretty ones that you drive "once in a while"? I like that approach, personally...
  15. I believe the Loyale was SPFI only other than the early production Loyale Turbo models. (Well, late L-series...you know what I mean.)
  16. No, there is no button. There may very well be a jumper behind the dash (I strongly suspect there is) to switch into metric--but--I have not removed my digidash and don't know for sure. The '87 and later digidashes (the green ones) are MUCH more reliable; the only one I've had go south on me is the one in my current daily driver (there's a short somewhere that I haven't been able to find, sometimes it dims, sometimes it doesn't) out of 4 I've owned; out of the 3 orange ones I've had none have been fully functional and one was totally dead. There's a km/h reading in the background so that Subaru can use the same dashboards across model lines and countries without having to pay for retooling. Doesn't mean we can use the km/h reading easily, unfortunately.
  17. If you baby it you'll get about the same gas mileage on regular. If you use 91, as I do, you should average around 26 in highway driving. Also, this is likely to be a pushbutton 4WD system, part-time but not dual range. Subaru used the same "basic" 4WD transmission from the DL on most Turbo models.
  18. Going by our very own Specs page: -carbed 2bbl Hitachi, on an '85 DL sedan will do 82hp@4800rpm, 101ft-lbs of torque@2800rpm -MPFI on an '85 GL-10, 94hp@5200rpm, same torque as the carbed car -MPFI Turbo, c. 1985, will do 111hp@4800rpm and 134 ft-lbs of torque@2800. -MPFI Turbo 1987 & later is good for 115 hp, same torque as earlier. -SPFI engines generate 90hp and, once again, 101 ft-lbs of torque at 4800 and 2800 rpms respectively.
  19. I'm with benebob on this one...yes, the 2.2 has legendary reliability. On the other hand I'm one of many people who have had head gasket issues with the 2.5 and would not recommend a turboed one until they've been on the market for at least 5-6 years. YES, I know the hg material is different--AGAIN. I want to see if they got it right this time.
  20. What I want to see is how Trent is going to install that clutch into his ECVT Justy:confused:
  21. Who said anything about breaking the law? Top speed on my Justy--74mph on level ground. I-80 in Nebraska--75mph, almost all of it level ground:grin:
  22. Short out the lock circuits in the doors themselves...anyone have a pic of the inside of the lock mechanism? IIRC it's a normally open circuit that results in the light being on. (You'll only need to do this for the 3 passenger doors, by the way--there is no wiring in the driver's door or tailgate.)
  23. I purchased a 6 disc CD changer/AM/FM/cassette from an '02 WRX off eBay, and I'd like to put it into my GL-10--BUT--I don't have the connector for the back of the radio (obviously the one in the GL-10 is different), nor do I have (or can I find) a pinout. There is nothing that comes out of the back of the unit, only a space for the harness that's built into the car to plug in--and I was told by the dealer that it would be a $125 part as the entire dashboard wiring harness for that year was integral to the radio. Any input, or could anyone spare me the connector? Thanks, Andrew
  24. The Loyale I saw had a tan interior (as stated). It was a '94 red 5sp 4WD wagon. I can't keep the pushbutton shifter because scrapdaddytatum already put a d/r tranny in the car. On the other hand I did get a center console out of a '97 OBS that might be going in instead...we'll see what happens.
