It is stuck in two gears at once. Sometimes an aggressive jerking back and forth of the shift lever will get it out. Or an aggressive stirring action.

Before I yank the tranny out, I'd make sure an inner CV joint didn't grenade.

I had a problem while putting the ej22 in my bug, the ecu had power while the ignition was on, but not while cranking. It sparked at weird times, like turning the key off. Double check to make sure that the ecu has power while cranking and with ignition on.

I'm going to GravelRx's house on Sunday to retrieve the trans in question. It sounds like it will work, with just a bit of effort.

How different? The donor car is locked up, not sure if I will be able to get the TC off of the flexplate.

I need to know if a 3at pushbutton 4wd out of an '85 EA82 car is a direct swap for the 3at pushbutton 4wd out of a '84 EA81 car. I'm 90% sure they are the same animal.

Drove on rim for 26 miles.. problems??

It smells like Miles Fox in here. -
It's fixed. The original pulser was bad. The second had a dirty terminal. Stupid bad connections.
-
Maybe I have 2 bad pulsers. Doesn't sound likely, I guess I need to break out the ohmmeter.

It does the same thing with both switches, all combinations. Here's a question...if a fan wasn't hooked up, would the amplifier detect it? The fans aren't stock, they are modine's (I think), one isn't wired up correctly. My lack of accurate diagrams aren't helping. Alldata doesn't really differentiate between the models very well.

Aside from the pickup on the front of the compressor, what else is there?
-
What is the gap supposed to be? You can tell I have all the proper literature at hand.

how hard to replace?

Advance has them starting at under $10. -

Get a new one. -
I'm trying to square a few things away on the RX before Mykingcrab takes possession. I've replaced a blown o-ring in the compressor, vacuumed it down, and tried to charge it up. The compressor won't stay on for more than a second. I thought perhaps it had a bad low pressure switch. Jumping the switch did nothing, aside from turning the compressor back on for just a second. The relay behind the right shock tower clicks when the switch is jumped, clickes again a second later when the compressor switches off, and clicks again when I remove the jumper. It's almost like something is purposely turning the compressor off. A little research lead me to the compressor lockup sensor (you could call it that, I guess). Alldata suggests that if the compressor locks up, this sensor will see it and turn the compressor off. I have two of these, neither one makes a difference. After putting a jumper wire in right at the relay, I was able to get the compressor to stay on, and I charged the system and determined that it worked. yay. Anyone have any suggestions on the electrical side of the house?

Yeah, it sounds kinda like hydrolock. -
The Rosey is Knocking

It sounds like the engine ate it. No oil tends to do that. These engines are really easy to remove, I'd start shopping for another. -
I finally took my bug to the track. 150k ej22 in the back of a '74 standard beetle. Beetle has no interior. Weight of car unknown. With moderate wheelspin on a 4k launch, the car would put down low 15's at around 90 mph. Best run was something like a 15.12 @ 92.0. I'm happy with that. A 50 shot would be cool, but I'd probably grenade the tranny.

I find that the ea82 is way too wide for this conversion. It will involve a ton of sheetmetal modification to the back of the car. I advise dumping the EA82 and going with an EA81 or EJ-series engine. Seriously.

Alcohol, like methanol or whatever, can help a car pass. You just don't want to leave it in there for weeks, because it will corrode things. Run it lower on fuel, throw a gallon of denatured alcohol in there from the hardware store, Maybe throw in a few more degrees of ignition timing, show up at the test station with the engine fully warmed up, and you'll pass. Drive the car around intil nearly empty, and fill up with your regular fuel.

Can charcoal canister be cleaned or replaced?
Nug replied to Camelwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've been working on a Loyale. The vacuum modulator failed, sucking ATF into the engine. ATF also made it into the charcoal canister. It was interesting, sort of. -
Black crud on spark plug threads isn't uncommon, or a cause for alarm, IMO.
