replacing halfshaft...
Brian here's a tip to save some time. Instead of removing all of the brake parts, just take the 4 bolts out that hold the hub to the rotor then tap the hub off with a hammer. Don't forget to put a little bit of grease on the part of the hub the spins inside the wheel bearing seal, when you put things together.

2000 forester rear wheel bearings and brakes
GLCraig replied to joyrockey's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSubaru tried to save money by using Ball bearings for the rear of foresters and imprezas. If the person who replaced the bearing is up on there subarus they would have replaced them with Legacy wheel bearings since they are tapered roller bearings and hold up much better.

Snapped bolt head off a flywheel bolt.
The first thing I would do is to take the other flywheel bolts out and see if you can get the flywheel off. If you can you should be able to get the rest of the bolt out of the crank with some vice grips..

EA81 in gen 1?
hmm that's interesting. When I had to replace the transmission in my 80 hatch, the only one I could find was from a 78 and I had to swap parts from the two to make it work.

HELP differintal bolt pattern is diffrent!!!

Also a 5speed from a 90 may not be the best choice since the 1st gen Legacy 5speeds tend to grind going from 1st to 2nd.

Yeah those holes get bolts with seal washers. If you have a turbo the water supply for the turbo connects there instead of the bolt with washer.

by chance could you have put the #3 and #4 wires on backwords or maybe you don't have the cams 180degrees apart?

1st Gen Legacy tire question
I'm looking to upgrade from 14's to 16's on my Legacy and I was wondering what tire sizes fit well. Tire Rack shows that a 205/50/16 is the same circumference as then stock 185/70/14 but I'm would rather run a 205/55/16 because there are more tires available in that size. Has anyone tried running a 205/55/16 on their 1st gen legacy? If you have were there any problems.

Are you sure that you have the tentioner pulled all the way up and you have your routing correct? because there should be plenty of slack to get the belt in there.

gearing to 4.11 questions
I either heard or read somewhere that some australian ea81s got a d/r 4speed with 4.11 gears. But trying to get one of those gear sets would probably cost more then you paid for your brat. If you have all kinds of money to burn you could probably have a 4.11 or even a 4.44 ring and pinion machined for you.

No, the EA81 didn't come out until 80 and only with an automatic transmission that year.

EA81 in gen 1?
well Subaru sold a Gen1 Brat in 81 (the last year for a gen1 brat) and it came with an EA81 with a d/r 4 speed. I'm not sure what they did to make the engine fit but they did make some changes to the d/r 4 speed for it to fit into and gen1 chassis. What they changed was the casting for the transfer case and tail housing. If you can find one of these transmissions it would make the swap easier. If you can't find one you'll need to do some fabrication to make a regular d/r 4 speed fit and maybe a new drive line will need to be made. You might want to consider going with a d/r 5 speed from an EA82.

cracks or casting marks?
cracks between the valves are common on ea82s. The vast majority of the time they are nothing to worrie about. here's a copy of a SOA service bulletin about those cracks. http://home.comcast.net/~c.moe/heads.pdf
