  1. Check your coolant level. The sounds you're describing are common when the coolant level is low.
  2. I've been told by a longtime subaru mechanic that 80s and 81s did have a vaporlock lock problem, but that dosen't sound quite like what your problem is. This is just a guess but I think your engine is cooling off enough that the choke need to be closed some and it's not closing. Try pumping the gas once before starting and see if it helps.
  3. relocating the rails isn't really a possibilty, you'll see why when you take a seat out. Now you could relocate the seats on the rails.
  4. Have you checked the valves yet to see if they are burnt-out.
  5. Opps, that isn't quite where the speedsensor is. You will need to remove the speedometer from the clustor. The thing with two wires attached to the speedometer is the speedsensor
  6. the speed sensor sits above the speedometer cable, where it attaches to the speedometer. It's has two wires sticking out of it.
  7. I saw that one once while i was going to college there. There is also a lifted ea81 white wagon with a 6 lug conversation running down there too.
  8. okay subarus with manual transmissions have a check stick on the right side. Automatics have a checkstick for the front diff and another for the transmission itself. The rear diff has the 2 plugs, one to fill and check, the other is a drain.
  9. A door from a ea71 hardtop might work but the chances are that if it dose you will need to swap the the window glass from your brat door.
  10. If I had time and money to put a lift on my GL I would make the trip down, I would join you guys. I never got a chance to do any wheeling over in the Rougue valley while I was attending OIT. There were enough places to go in the Klamath Basin, I didn't see the need to go over to that side of the mountains.
  11. Struts from a 93 or 94 AWD wagon should bolt right in. There maybe some from later models that will bolt in too. Struts from a sedan may not match up right in the rear 2wd struts may not match either.
  12. Well there is some info need here. Dose the temp gage on the dash show that the engine is running at its normal temperature? If it dose, changing the thermostat isn't going to help you much since the new one will keep the engine running at basically the same temperature. What your problem might be is a clogged heater core.
  13. If you're going to tear down that engine, you might as well hone the cylinders and put a new set of rings on the pistons
  14. Hey could someone with an 84 or later ea81 4wd, go and take a look at their clutch fork? My 83 FSM shows there should be a spring connected to it. However my 84 doesn’t have a spring connected to its clutch fork. As some of you know from an earlier thread, I'm having some clutch cable issues and I want to determine if the lack of this spring is my problem. Here is a link to my earlier thread. http://usmb.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5525&highlight=clutch+cable
  15. Actually GM owns 20% of Fuji Heavy Industries. Here's a link to the press release on FHI web site. http://www.fhi.co.jp/english/news/press/1210news/12_10gm_news.htm
  16. yep the white one. I thought I had the only EA81 wagon there. Who else brought one?
  17. you did better then me, and they spelled your name right too.
  18. You can still get keys from a dealer and probably the lock cores too. If you can't get new cores, take the ones you have to a locksmith and have them matched whatever subaru key you want.
  19. About a year I replaced the clutch in my 84 GL 4wd, the parts came from a dealer and included the disk, plate, pilot bearing, release bearing and release bearing holder. When everything went back together, I ran out of adjustment with the clutch cable before the proper adjustment could be obtained. Well I drove it like that for a few weeks then I ended up buying my legacy and ended up not driving my GL very often. Well this weekend, in peroration for the rally cross. I went and replaced the clutch cable. But now my new cable has the same problem. Too much slack and not enough adjustment left. And yes I do have the cable routed correctly. The only things I can think of are that I got either the wrong release bearing or the wrong release bearing holder.
  20. If you have the owners manual still, it should say what diff it should have.
