Check the U-Joint on the drive line from the transmission to the rear diff. When they go bad it sometimes sounds like a bad CV.

Throttle cable very slack at 1300 idle
GLCraig replied to NorseKode's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It appears that the temp sensor(s) or the thermostat are bad. If the ECU thinks the engine is still cold it will maintain fast idle. -
The drive shaft will not swap, because the hatch has a shorter wheelbase.

Here is a dumb question from me even lol
GLCraig replied to bajavwnsoobnut's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've seen a couple of people run 205/60/13 before. Just make sure your wheels are wide enough to for them. -
I wonder if that's the place my boss was telling me about? He told me about some good trails around Scappoose.

1.8ltr turbo and dual exhaust ports
GLCraig replied to Myxalplyx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
the only 1.8L engine that I know of that came with dual exhaust ports is the EJ18, which is the engine for the early Impreza. All of the EA82 and EA82T engines had just a single exhaust port. -
since you didn't mention hearing any nasty metal on metal noise, I would think that the transmission is just fine. With 105k on the car it's very possible that it still has the original clutch in it and that the disk is simply worn out. A clutch replacement is going to cost about the same as it would in any import car. Another thing you should do is to look through the repair history of the car. The big thing to look for is when the timing belts were changed last. They should be done at around 55k miles and if they brake, the engine will quit running.

need help deciding on water pump
GLCraig replied to MaroonDuneDoom's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If I remember right. For no/ac you want the pump that dose not have studs. Then again my memory hasn't been the best lately. -
ulpholstery cleaning methods?
GLCraig replied to bushbasher's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Compressed air and a dry stiff brush will loosen more of it up so you can vacuum it up. -
this is how the owners manual for my legacy explains the Manual mode switch. "the manual mode is used for driving in slippery condidtions. In position 3 the transmission holds 3rd (but shifts automatically between 2nd and 3rd during starting or low speed driving). In position 2 the transmission holds 2nd gear."

Why does my oil dipstick keep popping out!?
GLCraig replied to Warp3's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Besides the PCV valve, check all of the PCV hoses for being plugged-up. -
EA81 Next Question : O2 sensor
GLCraig replied to bluesbug's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If you dissconect the O2 sensor, the ECU will run in the fail safe mode and you'll get crappy gass mileage. -
simple idle question
GLCraig replied to MaroonDuneDoom's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The ECU is thinking that the engine is still on the cold side, so it just kicks up the idle. -
Just the size of the axle nut

You know my 83 FSM only shows 2 cams one for subarus with manual transmission and another for subarus with automatic transmissions.

I can't remember if it was 79 or 80, when they made the change on the ea71 water pump. I do know that my 80 hatch had the original engine and it had the newer style pump. When I had that hatch Subaru had different part numbers for the ea71 and ea81 water pumps. The only obvious difference is that the ea71 pump had a black pulley and the ea81 had a green pulley. Maybe there was a difference in pulley diameter or just a difference in the paint color.

see if you can find a set of coilovers from a 4wd wagon. They should help some.
-
I had one of those fall out of my ea71 4wd trans. I discovered this when I drained the oil before dropping the trans. The reason I dropped it, was to replace it, because it would only shift into 4th gear unless I made a sharp left turn. After looking at some diagrams, it's pretty obvious that one of the functions of the insert is to keep the different parts of the syncro in alignment.

Before you take the time to replace the gasket, take a couple of minutes and see if there are any loose screws.

4wd rear bearing lock ring socket?
GLCraig replied to trentet's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
oops i'm was thinking of the special socket needed to get the nut off of the drive gear for the transfer case; in my earlier post. The special tool dose exists because I've used one before. You might be able to fab one out of a thick wall socket that's roughly the same diameter as the lock nut. -
4wd rear bearing lock ring socket?
GLCraig replied to trentet's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
you're probably going to need to fab one up. the subie shop i worked at had the special socket, all it is, is a thin wall 32mm???. You would be best off buying an elcheap 6 point socket and turning it on a lathe or grinding it until it fits through the hole. -
Dose the distributor turn when you crank the engine over???

AT modulator Valve, what does it do?
GLCraig replied to ShawnW's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The modulator basically adjusts the line pressure of the transmission when there is a change in the manifold absolute pressure. Your FSM should have a trouble-shooting chart to help figure out your problem.
