Gen 3 starter issue
I think it's your ignition switch. What some people do is put in a starter switch that goes directly to the starter. Read this thread...

Yet another Subaru Buggy idea
And more deadly . With a EJ20t in it...that thing would fly...I bet it doesn't weigh more than 1500lbs.

turn up idle 83 GL?
Check the fuel filters....there's 2. One in the engine bay and one in front of the passenger rear tire, next to the fuel pump. On top of a protective plate. REplace those and see if it helps. But if you're going to run gas cleaner through the gas, I'd get another set of filters so you can replace the new ones after you run the cleaner through the tank of gas. Because the cleaner will cause some crud to get loose and go straight into the filter. Adjusting the idle isn't going to fix it, just masks the problem.

Kind of cult-ish eh? I love it.

Why am l here? USMB.
I love the fact that everyone here is to help. They put their knowledge in and if it's wrong, they aren't flamed, too bad. Everyone is pretty cool, we all have our moments though. The fact that you can post some busted a$s car on here and you aren't going to get ridiculed like some other forums where the point is to show up one another. We take pride in our cars and what we can do with them. This is a very genuine group. I've read posts of people going to other people's houses to help dig a ditch that one person couldn't do by himself. The comradery. The fact that if you need a part, you'll probably get it from here and not for an arm and a leg. Ok Ok I'm done.

torque converter install
You gotta make sure the shafts all go in correctly. The middle one is the easiest, the smaller one takes some time, just put it in and twist a little bit. Check how far it's sticking, pull it out a little bit and instert again, see if it's sticking in the same amount. Do that a couple times, as long as it goes in the same amount, I'd do it once more then call it good.

Are these Turbo Heads
Chances are, yes. We need to see the sides of them, to see if there are oil feed/return ports and coolant ports. EDIT: IT does look like the turbo mounting holes are there and tapped. I'm going to say yes. Also, I didn't realize how much of an offset the intake ports were.

Wagon Brat
Who has the EA82 wagon that's made into a 4 seater brat? Can I see some pics?

2wd or 4wd
Forgot about that...my bad. I think someone's saying that driving on pavement might be a bad thing:lol:. I know that if you drive a 3.7 automatic witha 3.9 rear diff, stuff breaks. I bought a car from someone that said the 3at kept blowing up, he's had a "Subaru Only" shop replace it and try to fix the problem. Well someone along the line decided to put a 3.9 rear diff in it. Hey, it made doing a D/R swap a LOT easier.

What motor is in this car.
Not arguing with ya. I agree with the ea81 being better offroad, I thought the conversation was about GL and DL offroading. But the Hatchbacks have a shorter wheel base. And if it's only used for offroad a cellophane window wouldn't hurt:lol: . But if you use it for on and off road, then you best be careful with the rear window.

2wd or 4wd
It's not the straight lines that hurt the car in 4wd, it's the turning. But why are you in 4wd going 80? If you're in a situation you need 4wd, I don't think going 80mph is the smartest thing. It's like people with sutdded tires. They are an increased buffer, not a reason to go normal speeds while it's icy.

What motor is in this car.
They are all the same...GL and DL, Body/Drive Train wise (Not saying that DLs have D/Rs). All the GL and DL are trim levels. You can take a lift out of a GL and put it straight into a DL. GD just doesn't like DLs because they don't have things like a tachometer and volt-gauge (I think). And they are bare bones. In my opinion, they'd be better for off-road because they don't have the extra weight that is power windows, door-locks and what-not. I know, I know...like 10 lbs of stuff. You just have to swap a dual range. And with the dual head light setup you have more head lamp options.

I can take down my "WTB: Roll Bar" sign now.
What's the wall thickness on that bad boy?

What would you do? RX prob
Engine still in the car? I had this problem twice, once in the car, once out. Having it out was a lot easier. Take one side off then take the head off that's still attached and rotate the head. In the car, takes two people. One person is pulling up on the manifold while the other is moving it side to side. Soaking it with PB.

What would you do? RX prob
Do the basic diagnostics like Compression Testing it. What kind of smoke? Is it white? White is steam, gray-black is oil. Take the down pipe off the turbo and check for turbine shaft play. If the results from the compression test are good, replace the intake gaskets...OEM of course. Once the gaskets are replaced and if it doesn't blow anymore steam do a tune up: Timing belts and components, spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, thermostat, maybe a coil (money allowing for any of those). That's a nice car, I paid $400 for my RX and I had to reseal the whole engine and it's an 4eat.

4 speed vs 5 speed 4 wheel drive
:eek:Never heard of that...hah hah...just kidding. I think the 5speed is better gearing (slightly) for offroad, but I know it's great for daily driving. Gas mileage wise. Oh yeah..."DOOOO IITTTTTT"
