Need advice on replacing my rear shocks on EA81.
monstaru replied to A DOG's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yes ,yes you can get bigger ones. -
ok,so the trouble i ran into when i installed my 5 spd was, tranny mounts, and positioning .the brackets i fabbed for the tunnel/driveline mounts were east to do once i got my head on straight and was dedicated.if you do it yourself take a couple of days.don't try to rush it.bratsrus1 sells a 5 spd kit.i highly suggest you talk to him about it.oh yeah ,one more thing, you will need the 5spd flywheel.there is a write up on it in the usrm also.

pay specific attention to where he got his.new.if you want to get one out of a junkyard find some early 80's cadillacs.some of the alts will be 80 amp and some will be 100.just get the part numbers and stash if you have to go back for it.if you find one that is an 80 amp. you can buy an upgrade kit to switch out the brushes or something to make it 100 amps.this is really one of the easiest mods .if you have any type of ingenuity it can be done easily.

depends on how much manual control you want over your carb.if you are a tinkerer, get tha manual choke(dgv5a) if you like to set something and leave it pretty much.get the water choke (dgv),or electric choke(dgev)comes down to preferance. they are all in the same category .what you should be concerned about is what jets are in it for the primary main and secondary main.there is a thread floating around that will point you in the perfect direction.just do a search on weber.

as long as it is 32/36 you will have better luck.i thought there were a couple people that had used a dfav off fiats or something......but that one mounts backwards.
-
thats sad,you should use that color again.i like it.and next time, depending on how young your brother is.....that would be a good time to let him know that it was ok to say ************ in front of your dad...

i think you can buy the seals , but they are not a common thing.you may have to go to subaru.i have always just unhooked them .
-
just unhook it. that is the easiest fix for it.
-
follow the tension wire coming out of the hillholder over to the transmission and unhook.grab a beer and smile at your friend helping you.

nice steering wheel.....

if you just want a couple of inches .why don't you just mount some strut tops from an ea-82 on to an ea-81 extendable strut and ride at full extension.at that point put in some rx springs and you would have a good general road ride.a bit stiffer, but good control . tires, well i hate to say it,but 27 inchers are still going to rub.but not to much.mud flaps i'm guessing.also depends on tire tread.what style do you want?are you offroad more than on or vice versa.pretty much ,where do you want the money to go?would you rather have s.s. braided lines or knobbier more aggressive tires?bumpers ....etc...etc the swaybar is questionable.i don't have mine installed and i have smuggled subaru parts all over this state,on freeways at some points doing 85 .(i didn't say driving,i said at some points)squirrely as hell.but i like it.experiment.oh and i would just get a 4 inch lift kit.there are several to choose from now.later ...b

by classic he means that it is something that happens often with these old cars.if you take a look closely at your windshield you will see that there are pieces of metal or plastic surrounding it.look for any loose pieces.and get some silicone, gasket maker,or windshield repair goop at your local auto store and fill in the voids.oh, and do not trust everything a shop has to say about your auto..........cheers

best carb rebuild kit for my '82 hitachi?
monstaru replied to Spiffy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i have rebuilt alot of these carbs with the eklin kit.they work fine.if you have never rebuilt a carb before it can be a chore.it takes a bit of understanding as to how the parts work to understand where they go....(the directions are not directions)they are mearly a diagram and parts.:-\ shameless p-lug here.....i seem to be adept at rebuilds of these things.give me shout if you wish.thanks, brian -
if your axle stub came out of your tranny you have bigger problems than replacing an axle.

i have had more craap on my y-pipe than i knew what to do with and have never had a fire.it will take alot due to wind and the consistency of the metal.it is pot metal,it will not heat up consistently.to many different types involved there.before it would turn to fire you would smell it,so keep your nose open.

How did I fry my new clutch?
monstaru replied to portlandpiddler's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
all you need to get that bugger out of there is a two by four and some chain, good rope or straps.after all is loose, chain her up and one on either side can simply lift up and over the radiator support. -
lifts and shocks on an ea81..
monstaru replied to uncoolperson's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
damnit.i wrote a huge response to this and it got lost to the gremlins in my system i guess.find your resting rate for your vehicle.it is easy.measure from the center of your top mount to the center of your bottom mount.that rate or measurement should be in the middle of your shocks movement.if your rate at rest is say 16,you would want the compressed measurement to be 12 and the extended measurement to be 20 .or around there.a good comparison is the rancho 5241.tried and proven on our rigs with lifts on them. it is easy to get a shock that will fit with all the perameters.but you need to pick one that will work for what you want to do with it.granted , you can get a shock for an early model chevelle,it will fit,but it was designed for a rear wheel drive ,torque oriented situation.very stiff at some points, and loose at others.usually gas shocks. or you can get some stock shocks from a jeep wrangler tj series after 95 that will bolt right on and give a 4x feel. the thing about shocks is ,they are mostly designed for the specific weight of a vehicle....so when you are trying to cross breed your vehicles suspension you have to take that into account.i suggest you do more research before you take someone elses advice, for no other reason but to understand what you are doing to your car so that you are not surprised when it handles differently, and why -
