  1. I read this just today, http://www.wasteonline.org.uk/resources/InformationSheets/Paper.htm It makes good sense to me. I have been reading up on this more these past few days than ever before, and it is getting me motivated to keep recycling! But allright, enough is enough, I see how it is. Your not going to stop untill somebody says your right, and everybody else is wrong, or at least me. you proved that with this comment, "You are winning my argument for me". So I'll say it just to end this, your right, I'm wrong. Now lets stop. Oh, and a little tip from one gardner to another, red worms LOVE shreaded newspaper! I never tried cardboard. One more that I just did yesterday, I use scrap drywall(sheetrock) on my lawn and new garden plots to loosen up the clay. It make no sense to buy gypsum when scraps are free. I just pulverize the pieces in a bucket and spread out the powder.
  2. I have read your PDF, and many others. Just like any publication it is biased and narrow minded. Using more paper to save trees is just ridiculous. All the paper we use is made from farmed pine, which is smart because is grows fast. But they clear native forest to plant the pine. There is more life in a forest other than trees. And there are more trees than just pine! There are more trees here now than 100 years ago because all the trees were forested! National parks, and national forests were established to protect the forests so they would grow back, and they have. That's why there are more trees now, not because we use more paper?!?! It isn't just melting something down to use again, it's reusing it so it does'nt go into a hole. Paper and cardboard are reused in anything from packing materials to fuel for heat. It can be composted into soil instead of placed 100 feet below the surface and be wasted. I pull boxes out of the cardbaord dumpster to ship items in, that's recycling too. That different truck that hauls the recyclables uses the same amount of fuel that the SECOND trash truck uses to haul the extra trash your putting in your can. Everything you put on your curb has to be hauled, why not send it to be re-used instead on into a hole. There's a Trex plant not far from here that uses plastic right out of the dumpster to use in the "plastic wood" they make. There are many ways to recycle, and use materials that are easier to recylce that are just not being used. In order for the system to evolve into something better, it needs to be supported not aborted! It seems to me that your actions and opinions are fed with your anger, and I think your pissed because you feel deceived and defeated. Well, instead of turning your back on recycling because somebody said it wasn't productive, make an effort to change it, make it more effecient, find ways to imporve it. You have your opinion, and I have mine. That's the beauty of it all and our right to use. I will always be as conservative as I can, reuse what I can, and teach my kids to recycle and not to be wasteful. Oh, and please stop refering to me and/or my actions as being stupid.
  3. With a little resaerch you can find a canister type filter, mentioned above, that filters down to 5 micron. And some have a water separator too. I can't remember the part numbers now, but I remember seeing some in the NAPA catalog when I worked there. You could also use a Frantz filter which is common on ebay, but your gonna spend a lot of money!! They are famous for their bypass oil filters. It uses a roll of toilet paper for the element. Also Racor filters can be found on ebay too.
  4. Of course you'll have to disassemle the axles to remove the DOJ, shaft, and CV, leaving just the stub through the bearings to hold the wheel and brakes on!
  5. And the gasoline acts as a coolant to keep the motor from overheating and destroying itself.
  6. I'm not sure if it would help, but maybe you can get a vacuum resevoir off of another make of car at the junkyard and plumb it in the line for the vent controls?? Most domestic cars have them. It's round, black plastic, and about the size of a softball.
  7. My last off topic reply in this post I promise... I don't curbside recycle, And I don't throw everything away like a mindless, selfish noob. We don't have curbside here anyway, not even for trash. Unfortunately, many people burn trash here because of that, they're just too lazy I recon. I have to take my stuff right to the dump. Since I'm going there, I take my recyclables. Cardboard, paper, plastic, used oil, batteries, etc. All the metal I take to the scrap yard to get some cash. I don't make special trips to do it either, just when I am going that way for more than one reason. I compost our scraps, I give away things I don't need but are still useful, I pick up trash on the ground instead of walking past it, I don't burn trash or dump used oil on the ground, I use only fallen, sick, or dead trees for firewood, etc, etc, etc. I know it doesn't account for much in the big picture. And that there are too many people, governments, and corporate companies that just don't give a *************** about it for one person to make a difference. But I try. I don't, and can't do this anywhere near as efficient as I want to, but I do what I can, and I feel better about it. Imagine if everybody said "it doesn't matter what I do" and stopped recycling. There's more to it than filling a bin, but I won't waste anymore space here. One of the more important things that I've learned is that when your faced with a decision, the easy way is usually the wrong way.
  8. Since it sat for so long, it could just be a sticking ring, deposits burning off, or dried up valve seals. Next time leave the MMO in. I have to say that I can't believe the SeaFoam hurt the rings in an engine. I have used it in the crankcase of at least 6 vehicles and have never had a problem. And I leave it in untill the next oil change, although it has been said that it will evaporate of after a while. I think that engine had other issues.
  9. The EVAP or carbon canister is to deal with the fuel vapors. Venting the fuel vapors to the atmosphere is just as bad as not treating the exhaust. It is to keep the unburned hydrocarbons out of the air. The EVAP puts those fuel vaoprs from the gas tank, and carb bowl back into the engine through the intake manifold and burns them off. Removing the emissions is a bad idea, no matter how you look at it. Yes your car can run smoother, and removing the cat can make more power, but only if it's the old pellet type or if it's plugged. Have you ever looked through a new cat? A good, modern "high flow" cat that's made for engines up to 460 cubic inches isn't going to have much restriction for a 1.8 liter..... I like the air pumps some manufacturers use. it forces cool fresh air into the exhaust to give the unburned hydrocarbons oxygen to complete the burn. I like trees, I recycle, I bought my 89 hatch so I can park my inefficient ford truck(12mpg), and I like my kids breathing clean air....
  10. Was it 4wd? I had seen one that was a white three door RS, it had all the RX body work, ground effects, spoiler, etc. But was an automatic with no turbo. All factory.
  11. When I bought my GL-10, it had sat for almost a year before I got it. Engine assembled, with oil in it. When i first started it, the tick was so loud it scared the crap out of me! After realizing what it was, I let it idle with a can of SeaFoam in the oil. After 15 minutes or so, the tick was gone. I ended up replacing the oil pump later anyway when I did the timing belts and water pump.
  12. Is it due for an oil change? if so change it and use a qt of Rislone, or some SeaFoam, MMO, etc in the oil. It could be as simple as a sticking ring. Mine would puff at every shift untill I changed the oil with rislone in it, now it doesn't puff.... If you use a rope, use one that isn't much smaller than the plug hole or it will knot up in the cylinder some how and you'll really get mad! Also soak the rope in motor oil first.
  13. TOD = tick of death Valve lifter tick. The hydraulic lifters are full of air from a leaking oil pump O-ring(mickey mouse O-ring). Or they are not pumping up, after sitting for a long time the oil will drain down and it sometimes takes a while to pump back up. If the sound is faster than a rod knock, and is a lighter metallic sound, and it's coming from the heads more than the center of the block, it is the valve tick. Did you replace the oil pump? How long have you had the engine running like this? It can take 15-20 minutes of idling to go away sometimes. I fyou haven't had it running long, try adding a quart of kerosene into the oil and idling it for 15-20 minutes, drain, refill with oil and replace the filter. If you don't like kerosene, use Seafoam, or Marvels Mystery Oil. It will clean up the oil passages, and the lifters. How long did the parts sit before you used them? SPFI block and MPFI heads will not cause this.
  14. Don't intend to highjack, but.......... Do you remember what jets your using? What was your miliage before using the Kerosene?
  15. Right you are! Now that I've thought about it, the one on my turd, I mean Ford, did stick open.
  16. Good call on the fuel leak. And definitely worth the time to check for it. But in my experience, even the smallest of leak anywhere on the vehicle, and you will smell it right away. Expecially after the car has sat since the vapors fill the passenger compartment. I had a defective fuel filter on my gl-10 that leaked at the crimped end, and it wasn't enough to drip off the filter before it evaporated, and it was all you could smell in the car. Fuel filter and tune up first. Start small, then go up.
  17. There is no definate answer to this. There is no yes or no with Subaru models and what year had what. We have proved that wrong too many times on this board. I had an 86 2wd carbed, and an 86 GL turbo mpfi 4wd dual range not GL-1o or RX, a GL. At the time many board members called BS on me saying it wasn't offered that year. Going by the year alone isn't going to help much, nor by the model. You will only know when you pop the hood. I think you could get any combination available with the parts available from Subaru.
  18. So that's how you search for three letter words...
  19. The EA82 only had the Hitachi, it's the older EA81 and EA71? that had the one barrel Carter/Weber.
  20. Ok, I was playin' around with my EA81 89 hatch again, go figure:rolleyes: , and I noticed that the ND disty has what looks like a dual pickup. One on each side with wires going from one to another. Whats the benefit of this? It isn't a dual fire or wasted spark ignition, so is it just redundancy to insure that it creates a signal? Is it still one signal, or pulse, going to the coil? Is the Hitachi disty the same? or is it a singal pick-up?
  21. That threaded hole is where the "exhaust pipe" for the egr was right? It's been a while since I had a Subaru EGR off, but if that gasket under the plate seals off the exhaust route from the intake route, it should be fine to leave it open. If you don't have a gasket, it may leak past and create a vacuum leak. If you left the egr in place, with the vacuum line off, it will be fine with no air or exhaust movement. Without the EGR on an engine, you can get more detonation due to the higher cylinder temps. You may be able to get past that with more advanced timing and a richer mix to use the gas to cool the cylinders but it will run like crap since the engine was designed to have it. The igniton, cam, carb jets, carb size, emissions, etc all were made to run with EGR. A different engine entirely, but I had an EGR valve go bad on my 300 inline 6 powered 82 ford F150, and it produced a TON of detonation. I was 50 miles from home and had to drive the interstate, so I adjusted the metering rod to enrichen the mix enough to stop the detonation, but I cut my mileage in half to do it!! Luckily I had a spare EGR at home. Put that on, re-adjusted the mix, and it's fine now.
  22. A new carb can be as much as $400. I've seen them on Ebay for $150. Just rebuild/clean it. It's super simple. Get a kit(I have an OEM one for sale:brow: ) and just take it apart, one piece at a time, clean it, then put it back together. Weren't the 86 models either Carbed or turbo? No SPFI or MPFI ????
  23. Does he have any room for another gadget in his car???
  24. That's why the spacer is in there. And make sure the bearings are in all the way, even though tightening the nut gets them in all the way too. The axle is pulled in from the rear, and the nut pushes the outer one in. Take a good look in the hub before you install the bearings to make sure there are no burrs or dings that will keep the bearings from seating properly. If they catch, the torque will bind them. Keep an eye on the dust boot inner seal when you do it too, I've had several fold over while installing the axle and missed it. Two weeks later I was replacing the bearings again. Also, did the axle go into the bearings easily? or did you have to use the nut and spacers to pull it through? If it went in the new bearings easily, I would say that the axle is shot. That little play that allows it to go through easily will also create a wobble and your seal will not have proper contact on the axle letting dirt and water in. Some guys have replaced the bearings with ones that have a seal on them. Just one, and install it facing out towards the wheel seal. This gives you two seals per side.
  25. Do you have any pics of the bad areas? Surely someone here has repaired rust that was as bad and could give you some easy ideas.... If not, keep the car, buy some crappy older car or truck to get you by untill you find another Subaru. When you do, you'll have your old car for parts. Go cheap and get one with a bad engine and use yours to repair it. In Virginia a trooper can take your car off the road in a heartbeat! It's called "improper equipment". The state troopers are the inforcing body for the state inspections. They will close a garage down if they pass cars that can't pass inspection or if they don't do the inspection properly. I have gotten some scary warnings from balding tires, cracked windshield, loud exhaust, a lowered suspension in my old truck ... anything that would cause your car to fail inspection, could get you a stiff fine from a trooper, or worse. It's aggrevating, but at least the cars on the road are safer, and it makes me feel better knowing my kids are out there on the same roads!!!
