Welcome to the board! I have a 92 Loyale 5 Spd. Mine has had an aweful vibe (more like a shake) since the day I bought it..over a year and a half ago.Granted Bucky has alot more miles on him 185,000. I have tried about everything new axle shafts, tires, rebalencing the tires,alignment...everything short of replacing the struts. My 88 GL wagon had the same problem. I am starting to think its just something about the car. He also has a small shake at idle (feels something like a misfire) but thats coming from a bad EGR sylinoid and a weak motor mount. Geesh..87,000 miles??? Your Loyale isnt even broken in yet!! Just to let you know..keep your oil clean change the timing belts and keep up with rust and you will have many many more years with that car....they are quirkie (crazy little stuff goes wrong) but good cars. I love them. I paid $600 for mine and all I have done to it was an axle shaft, exhaust, and some ignition work in the 25,000 miles I have put on him. They like to leak oil also. This one and my 88 GL wagon (if you dont know they are basically the same thing) were my most trouble free, dependable cars I have owned. Good Luck and enjoy your Loyale

Am I dumb??? What am I doing wrong??
Bucky92 replied to Bucky92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks..and you thought I was crazy for putting it in my kitchen next to my puter:grin: ..see there was a method to my madness! Its easier to have great knowledgable ppl walking you through something when you can have them "right there" while you are doing it. Maybe next meeting of the First Subaru Church gathering..if it isnt too cold and its earlier in the day I can try and do Bucky's belts and oil pump seal...I still dont feel confident enough to try it on him without someone else around in case I screw up. Belts seem easy but I wont be able to tell if I did it right on this motor till the first time I go to start it. -

Thanks Guys!! Got them off!! I had bajavwsoobnut in IM too..ended up tossing the timing belts back on and wedging a screwdriver in the faceplate..the bolts cam off nicely then. And I forgot about the non-interference motor thing...DER!!! Still have bad memories of bending a valve in my Honda XR dirtbike..$700 later I had it fixed. Dont have valve tools or that knowledge yet..so I left it to those who knew. Actually this is the first time pulling heads off a water cooled system..any other pointers would be greatly appreciated.. But what I have already learned today is invaluable...I know completely understand the sucking in of the mickey mouse gasket and that little spot where the casting of the block comes together..and timing belts are CAKE!! Now I can't wait to change them on Bucky..knowing it wont be as easy since his motor is still inside along with all the stuff in the way. Thanks a Ton you all are the best!!!! -

So would I want to put the timing belt system back on??The tentioners have been removed and the whole front of the motor is open now. Should I have tried to loosen the bolts on the cam before removing the belts?? If so at least it will give me some practice on putting on new belts huh?? -
They let us out of work early today so it gave me a great time to work on my project motor.I finally took off the torque converter, oil pump, timing belts and adjusters, distributor, and valve covers..now I have run into a dilema. How do I get the timing pullies off the cam shafts without them turning..I dont want to bend a valve ( I am the valve bending queen when it comes to dirt bikes dont want that title on car engines too). Is there a safe place to shove a screw driver to hold the cam? I am trying to get the heads off the motor to replace the gaskets and see if they are going to need machined. Am or Did I do something wrong? Am I an idiot?? If so at least I am having fun!! Please help!!! OH..EA82 motor

Mary, I hope you get everything worked out. Also wish you could get the Brat down here for the next gathering of the First Subaru Church of the Reserection. Maybe we all could help get the bugs worked out. Don't feel bad ...I have the mystery coolant leak..its not bad but just annoying(have to top off the radiator every month or so...havent used a whole bottle of anti-freeze in the entire time I have owned the car yet). When it is cold out my tremp gueage barely gets off the cold mark but I do get some heat....I dont think its as hot as it should be but it isnt bad..plus I have that huge interior space to try and warm up being Bucky is a wagon. Do the Gen 1s have the fresh air gate controls on the outer vents like my Loyale,GL and Justy had?You know what I mean?? Your one gate could be stuck open or the control broke and thats why its only pulling in cold outside air. Just a thought....dont know anything about Gen 1s. -
I have only stopped at the Subie dealer here in Danbury one time to look at an Impreza wagon. But my experience wasnt very good. Seems the sales people judge you by apperence. Not one person really wanted to talk to me. I guess cause I drove up in my old Loyale and was coming right from work (dirty job no need to dress nice for cause it will just get ruined) and must have looked like I couldnt afford the car. Needless to saw I will be heading there soon to get a complete gasket and seal kit for my project motor soon but I am planning on being prepared with all the Subaru part numbers when I walk in the door.See how they like that.

I would like to remove the AC in my Loyale...I never use it so I dont see why I need to keep carrying around the extra weight or dealing with the power drain when running the defrost in the colder months. Seems like a pretty easy job but when Dave Paul and me looked at it last night we couldnt figure out where to remount the Alt once the compressor is removed since it bolts to it.I understand I will need to probably go to a smaller belt but I just can't seem to find where to put the Alt.Paul said he knows some here have done it before and to run it by you guys. Thanks in advance

I am going to take the torque converter off tomorrow after work if I even go (its snowing ..but that usually doesnt stop me Bucky likes snow even if he is just FWD). The motor rode very nicely..no leakage in the car..just the kitchen floor. Did have to run a stop light on the way home yesterday..if front of a cop none the less...to keep it from shifting. My neighbors now officially think I am insane.I happen to like my methods of home decorating. NorthWet...I am lucky I live on the first floor..only had 3 steps to go up...plus I can carry some some weight when I have to.I have shifted it around a few times already to center it and level it by myself. Its really not that heavy considering. Melis...I want to hear what Benebobs face was like when he saw IT!!!And thats good about you coming back up..we will need more candle crack by then. And ..I spend $25 every 2 weeks on these nails..I have put them through the test..they hold up well to car grease (my favorite thing) . Paul..I am thinking on getting the engine stand Melis and Dave were telling me about from Harbor Freight then look out!! I want to be the EA82 Goddess when I am done with this thing. -

LOL...I have a tini studio Apt..my puter sits on the kitchen table..the motor is going to be beside the table..It would go into the living room but there is no room....so the kitchen will have to do. I could put it in the basement but..why?? I want to look at it and if its more easily accessable I will work on it more. Heck I rebuilt a dirtbike in my bedroom. -
Its nothing special ..but it is to me... This big chunk of aluminum and stuff is my winter project. I am bouncing off the walls happy thanks once again to the MAN Moosens. This thing is going to help me in multiple ways. First if something happens to my Bucky I will have a spare....also what I am going to learn from this project is priceless. I am going to learn how to change timing belts and all the seals and maybe get into the HLAs. Its from an AT but Paul already told me what to do to swap it. It is going in my kitchen next to my puter so if or when I get into a bind I can turn to this wonderful group for help. Now I just wish my neighbor would wake up to help me carry it in the house!!!

high rise console question
Bucky92 replied to starkiller's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Were you the one looking for a EA82 high rise?????????At Moosens yesterday we were trying to remember who it was who was looking for one as we stood around holding one up. If so get ahold of moosens..if not but still looking..get ahold of moosens -
Just got back from Pauls with gifts for my Bucky!!!!!He now has a matching set of hubcaps and next trip will be picking up a large trim piece ..didnt have room this run cause Bucky has present in the back right now....A new EA82 motor!! Going to bring it in my kitchen and spend the winter putting new seals and gaskets in it and learning the joys of timing belts.Somehow ended up wanting the water pump off the motor and the rest of it just kinda came along. There is a method to my madness..If something would happen to Buckys current motor (which runs like a champ but you never know what might happen) I will have a spare to drop in....or if something cool comes along that needs a power plant I will have it. I am so excited..but at 1:30 in the morning I can't find anyone to help me bring it inside for me to start ripping into it. I feel like a giddy little school girl

Mary, Your Brat is one of the prettiest I have ever seen....You have my vote next Spring!! As for the attachment thing..I usually get somewhat attached to my cars but there is something about Bucky...I just can't see myself without him. And you have seen and riden in him..he is nothing special to look at and nothing fantastic to drive..he has his problems but tries his best to take care of me.When the day comes to let him go I will be devestated..will be like losing my best friend....cause he is.Just this week we have had 2 cars hit in the parking lot at work..the ppl at work think I am nuts for moving him to the WAY back..they just dont understand. Yup we are a crazy bunch arent we??
-
Mary!! They look FANTASTIC!!!!Way to go Tim!!And he says he doesnt like your Brat..HA..I think secretly he loves it as much as you do.

Speedometer Question
Bucky92 replied to Flowmastered87GL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My Speedo does the same thing... Mine sticks at 70MPH when keeping it there for any length of time. It wont increase either...stays at 70 even though I might be doing 75-78..I know how fast I am going by the tach and the degree of "shaking myself to pieces" It will stay like that till I drop it down to around 35. -
Black electrical tape..works for me:brow:

Oh No Melis!!! Just saw this tis morning (wasnt on my puter at all yesterday...had a whole afternoon of juicey motocross fun on TV and that kinda takes priority with me). I know you will have Shelby back and better than before! And you were lucky to get get Bucky's girlfriend...If something like that ever happened to me I would be devistated since I dont have a back-up car. Let me know if you need anything and I will see what I can do!

who's that dis'n the Justy?!
Bucky92 replied to RallyJusty's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My 90 Justy was a delivery car...(newspapers) It could handle being loaded down with 300 Sunday papers and still out run my friends 4 cylinder micro-cars with ease.It survived an incident involving a deer and me doing 65..It was one tough little beast...I wish I knew then what I do now cause I would have kept the little thing. 5spd FWD was told the motor was going at 90,000.....and I believed it:banghead: . -
The old school Subarus in Austria
Bucky92 replied to Lukas's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Those Libero's are so cool!!! I dont like mini-vans but I would definately drive one of those!! I hope I am not the only one who feels this way but alot of the time I feel us US ppl get the shaft on the imported vehicles...some of the best models are stopped here before they are stopped other places (example the Brat). But most ppl I know want big obnoxous cars that suck up too much gas tat go really fast and forget about funtionality....I will keep my small, old underpowered Loyale anyday over a big gas hog. -
I have a decent example of a North Eastern car that has been taken care of for rust reasons. The underside is 99% perfect and what little rust I have on the body I take care of ASAP. I Also frequently wax my car..3-4 times a year..and not the lazy man wax either..I use the old fashioned, arms get sore, wax on wax off, turtlewax. The plastic molding on the wheel wells are a problem....I just did some rust work on a friends 2001 Ford Truck and the amount of rust under that molding was unbelieveable. The entire time I was working on it I was mumbling about what a stupid idea this is ..at least seal it better..too many ppls vehicles are doing the same thing and they dont even know about it.
