Anyone order the timing belt covers?
idosubaru replied to 1-3-2-4's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXall the covers are sold individually. fronts are three pieces - drivers side, passengers, and center. then there are two rear pieces - so 5 in total. subaru's opposed forces website of parts diagrams might help you?

headgasket
idosubaru replied to maarten's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXyeah this headgasket can easily (relative word there) be done in the car. the gasket job itself is much simpler out of the car but the added process of removal is a headache for some. so take your pick. if you got a bad back, pull the motor. !

OK, this is an embarrassing question
idosubaru replied to tricked919's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXthat sucks. certainly depends how bad you think it is as well. i'd carefully hose it down with all the spray and dirt able to run out the bottom of the engine. only problem with blowing it out is if the solvent flushes oil out of bearing surfaces you'll have those surfaces turning over without any oil flow. on old generation engines the oil pumps weren't crank driven so you could spin them with a drill to move oil throughout the engine. not sure how to do that with an EJ. i'd probably entertain the idea of disengaging the fuel pump (so there's no fuel flow) and turning the engine over a few times to circulate oil through all the bearings. just don't over-work the starter all at one time, they're not meant to be run for more than 20 or 30 seconds at a time. i'd also do at least one oil change immediately after running it the first time.

01 H6 VDC OBW Oxygen Sensor?
idosubaru replied to skibumm's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXthere you go %50 savings, nice hit. there's cheap ones in ebay too sometimes. if you're willing to splice your original connector onto bare wires you can buy the O2 sensors without the plug, they're much cheaper that way usually.

Performance Headers: EJ22 N/A.
idosubaru replied to TheLoyale's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXCan you elaborate on mileage? How sure are you in the mileage increase and what type of driving - mostly daily driving or highway? I'm curious because that's why I would buy them. Thanks for the feedback.

overheat question
idosubaru replied to subegrl's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXthanks mike, good to know on that bleeder screw. you can drive these all day long, they won't over heat...until they run low on coolant. keep it full of coolant and you have no worries on overheating, on this year motor it's strictly about coolant level.

Performance Headers: EJ22 N/A.
idosubaru replied to TheLoyale's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHow about some feedback on the performance of these headers? Any threads or info on that in other forums/threads?

Leak down test
idosubaru replied to Roger Stokes's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHave you asked/talked to them about this? They still should warranty it, it's a failed head gasket either way. I would talk to them, they probably don't know this motor has this issue. They should still warranty a failed head gasket whether it's leaking, exploding, dripping, coughing, mixing, overheating, etc. Either way it's failed.

please advise: buying 2000 impreza outback sport wagon
idosubaru replied to greenleg88's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXcheck for torque bind and make sure all tires match in size and tread depth. looks like a great deal, $2,200, what a steal!!! does it have the 2.2 or 2.5, did you check? The Ej22 showed up in impreza's in 2000. if it is an EJ25 it's not the first gen DOHC, it's the second generation SOHC. So to check for typical headgasket leaks look at the back of the engine where the head meets the block. They leak externally there and it's really easy to see the black/coolant/wetness on the block at that mating surface. If it's a dealer they should be able to check records and see if the head gaskets were ever replaced, due to that issue SUbaru offered an extended 100,000 mile headgasket warranty on that vehicle. That's an interference engine and at 150,000 miles and 10+ years old the timing belt should have been replaced, it's a 105,000 mile interval belt. Check the belt and personally i'd be inspecting the bearings in the timing pulleys as well but they won't likely do that for you. I'd ask for the gear oil in the transmission to be changed as well, or at the very least checked, too many folks are super anal about engine oil and never change trans fluids.

Current Head Bolt tightening procedure-What is the Lastest procedure?
idosubaru replied to 98sub2500leg's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI thought it odd that they're so specific with sequence in every step, including removing the heads, but not on that one step.

Air Conditioning - Replacing Compressor, Receiver drier, block expansion valve, etc..
i don't know, never replaced the expansion block. i've only ever replaced the one component that failed. a picture would me see what happened with that bolt you're talking about. remove intake !!

Leak down test
idosubaru replied to Roger Stokes's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI mentioned this on your other thread. A leak down test is not affected by an external oil leak - if that were the case then all subaru's more than 5 years old would fail a leak down test  If you don't believe me, or maybe I'm missing something, you might want to ask on here whether or not a leak down test is going to help you. Hate to see you throw money, frustration, and time at this for no reason. What you need to realize is that this motor has a very specific type of head gasket failure, it's not "normal". A compression test will be perfect. A leak down test will be perfect. Not because the headgaskets are fine, but because they arent' failing that way. There are multiple failure modes for a headgasket and yours is different than those. If the company doesn't know that then you need to let them know. A picture of the motor and the GOBS of online information and websites should be plenty to document the EJ25 SOHC headgasket issues. Or Subaru's own warranty and information.

Current Head Bolt tightening procedure-What is the Lastest procedure?
idosubaru replied to 98sub2500leg's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXwhen it says to "loosen all 180 degrees", does it require any particular order - forward/backward? probably the same sequence as all the rest or doesn't matter?
-
Air Conditioning - Replacing Compressor, Receiver drier, block expansion valve, etc..
if you're not comfortable with something then follow those directions exactly as stated and you'll be fine. the important thing to me, that I was trying to relay, is that if you're off by a good amount either way it's not going to make a difference. sometimes things need to be exact and sometimes they don't, this is one that's benign - within reason of course, i'm assuming you're obviously on point and going about this the right way . i wouldn't bother with the measuring in that much depth but for a first timer following those steps is a good move.

01 H6 VDC OBW Oxygen Sensor?
idosubaru replied to skibumm's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXi would clear it and see how long/if it comes back. although at this age/mileage i'm one to just give it new parts, if that's the issue. i replaced both of the fronts on our H6 OBW with new from Subaru just because I plan on having it another 150,000 miles so why not?

did you try subaru? i ordered some XT6 rear bushings last year and they were amazingly cheap, like $3 or something.

O2 Sensor Condition
soot is very common in the ones i've pulled, i wouldn't relate it to any issues. they're almost always black as well as that "burnt white" look when i pull them.

Timing Belt question
idosubaru replied to Old Pearl's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXthis has been discussed before, you could search for federal and california emissions and find those old threads. dont' know that it was conclusive either way. some folk suggests the belts are identical now.
-
Air Conditioning - Replacing Compressor, Receiver drier, block expansion valve, etc..
why are you wanting to drain the compressor? get a rough figure, looks like you have plenty of information to go with, and then add it and you're done. follow all the directions and suggestion they may come with. this isn't an exact science, it's not like if you're 25% over or under you're going to destroy anything. get it close and you're golden. it distributes itself evenly during operation.
