  1. i'm interested in this question too. i think i've had to drop the rear diff as well - 3 additional bolts and playing with all that weight hanging on the axles. thing is...i know the off-road guys swap the axles out by just knocking out the pins, but maybe that's because they have a lift and the axles are "stretched" more?
  2. the EA81 and EA82 are both 1.8 liters. i'm guessing it's an EA82, but others more knowledgeable and will know.
  3. we'd need separate sub-forums for all the different fixes, failures and parts that go bonk.
  4. is yours EA81 or EA82? is your GL a hatch or a wagon? i think the hatch will be EA81 and wagon EA82. can't help you on the boots, i order new axles from MWE (their information is on here, in the vendors forum probably). i hate working on axles, not worth my time. and i won't install any parts store axles, they suck.
  5. oh there's the confusion - i didn't read that, i think he's just asking because many people don't know...interference or not. does that make sense????????? if not, let me explain it this way: ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? sorry i need to go to bed, that was probably only funny to me.
  6. having 3 quarts in it is not enough to cause "metal chunks and flakes". was it run lower than this in the past? even on 5 quart cars this is true, i think some EJ's are only 4 or 4.2 or something like that. 3 quarts is less than ideal but nowhere near low enough to cause engine problems. are you sure the metal flakes were in there, how did you see them or strain them? EJ engines are not hard to find. i picked one up at a yard last week for $150. 6 month warranty, 101,000 miles on it. start calling around and see what prices you can find. they can vary WILDLY to say the least, so keep searching. i'd avoid the JDM stuff myself, not necessary as good and inexpensive EJ22's are easy to find.
  7. wowsers nip! that's much higher than %90 in my experience and i've never seen it on the couple XT6 boards or on here either. good to make sure nothing catastrophic happened, but an old belt probably just broke. even on the couple engines that have seized that i've seen (blocks and cams), i haven't seen a broken belt before...not saying it isn't possible though.
  8. 85 brat - so this is an EA81? are EA82 and EA81 rear diff mounts different? try the parts wanted forum too...not trying to step on turbone's feet or anything, but i'm just assuming he won't mind not removing one?
  9. have to know what engine to be sure, but assuming you posted in the older generation forum because you have an EA82 then no - no bent valves.
  10. yes. i've done this on an XT6 and monitored the change. i've upgraded to 16" (XT6 stock 14") and they defintiely get a few more miles per gallon on interstate driving. keeping in mind that skinnier tires are better than wide for gas mileage. i forget the exact numbers, but i'm thinking 2-3 mpg better. this would certainly be easier than swapping front diffs. some people on another thread mentioned that gear ratio does not affect gas mileage, or not in the way of "lesser RPM's=better mpg's". i disagree but not quantitatively.
  11. quit lying!!!!! sure they do - the head rounds itself off, then you go to alternate means and the head shears off leaving everything else still rustwelded together for you to drillout. i *might* have one if turbone can't come up with one. consider me a last resort, a very last resort.
  12. that EA82 water pump madness is annoying. i'd install the right one. that puts additional loads on the water pump shaft that it wasn't meant to take as well. i wouldn't be surprised for it to work for a long time, but i also wouldn't be surprised at all if the water pump bearings or seals failed early.
  13. i needed one for one of my old XT6's and they could be had for $70 from the dealer, though i think the price is now in the triple digits and this part should be the same on the EA82 it might be worth a shot. there's enough good used ones around though. i got lucky, one of my XT6's had a brand new one on it, so i've kept that one on my own daily driver.
  14. they don't have to be exactly the same but there are plenty of EA82 variations that means they are not all interchangeable either. punch in those parts numbers on an online Subaru parts site and let us know what you get.
  15. be sure to use the Fel-Pro permatorque headgaskets, they are THE headgaskets to use on the EA82.
  16. i wouldn't weld it, just thread a screw in there with some sealant on the threads, though that probably isn't needed anyway. the EGR fitting doesn't have any sealant.
  17. i'd imagine the Subaru filters are an aftermarket filter - just painted for Subaru, it is unlikely that Subaru makes their own. can probably find out searching. here's a link, and i saw others, suggesting that Purolator supplies Subaru with oil filters: http://www.mindspring.com/~latvia/Other/SubaruOilFilters/Comparison.html it has a comparison and some info on there, with the conclusion being the same i've seen in other tests and repeated across many other boards - Fram's suck.
  18. go ahead and start preparing for a head gasket, not sure why they're throwing all these parts at it. guess they haven't seen this before? and you're not the first person with a "i just bought this EJ25 and now it's overheating" post - so yeah, people ditch them with bad headgaskets. i'd be more concerned with how bad they let it overheat (knowing they were trading it in) rather than the headgasket being replaced. Subaru will not be checking and milling the heads - they will gasketslap it for sure.
  19. this is a bad topic to start here. you'll get as many replies as people really. your best bet is to do some research on the internet or bobistheoilguy.com. or do a search. WIX or purolator for the oil filters for me. definitely avoid Fram, anything but a Fram or a rebadged Fram is fine. some say the higher quality Frams are good, i avoid them all if there willing to sell that other junk.
  20. unfortunately this is common practice and he may have a hard time finding a good dealer. buying lots of subaru's and working on them for friends/family i see tons of paper work with bogus charges like this, thousands of dollars worth in some cases.
  21. the 1995 heads won't be EGR unless they're from an automatic. if they're from a manual trans, they will not have EGR stuff on them.
  22. there's nothing all that complicated about the EJ25 headgasket, but i'd have the same concerns. mistu guys working on a subaru. if you get the idea they're a stand up place and taking care of you, i'd just make sure they're using a Subaru head gasket and not something aftermarket. this is a great deal really, if you can end up with a new headgasket out of the deal, i wouldn't want to be driving an EJ25 with the original head gasket.
  23. how are they treating you and this experience? if you can get them to do a quality head gasket job then it's a great deal. if they're being dorks about it, then it's a roll of the dice whether they'll do the job properly or not. a warranty on the head gasket work in writing would be nice. and make sure they're using the updated Subaru gasket.
  24. every has their own oppininion - im' an MMO user (marvel mystery oil). keep in mind that post 1998 4EAT's got an external filter, i would assume that's on all 4EAT's since but am not sure. anyway, there is the possibility that your transmission has 2 "filters". the one they have always had, the internal screen that really isn't a filter. and the newer addition of a second filter that would be a screw on style similar to your engine oil filter. if their talking about the screen filter, i'd never replace that. if it has the external transmission fluid filter i would replace that every 60k no matter what the manual says about it. i certainly wouldn't leave it on there for the life of the vehicle. the diff oils likely won't need replacing then, but it's not a bad idea either. definitely have them checked at least, make sure you're not loosing any. i'd stick with OEM on this motor. though OEM is only an NGK plug that's avaiable for a buck or two at the parts store instead of $8 each at Subaru.
