Well disguised 'referred' wheel bearing noise
ShawnW replied to michaelbteam's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThat's a great price but book time is 3.2 hours, $70 list for the bearing and a couple seals. $400 is pretty typical.

highway mileage on a 2.5 '97 outback wagon
ShawnW replied to the sucker king's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXNot really, everything is critical to getting top mileage. Big roof rack, having a moose strapped to the roof, etc drops it fast too.

what's wrong under EJ22 valve cover? pics

Just thinking about air
I seem to remember the noise being a factor. A couple of washable air filters (K&N) might be cheaper than all the tubing and such.

what's wrong under EJ22 valve cover? pics
ShawnW replied to 89Ru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIve found it a 15 foot pounds every time I looked it up. 8.7 is probably the valve cover bolt torque but I would have to look to be sure.

WCSS Swap meet??????
If they don't sell ship one to me!

And I am out!
I agree. The Impreza chassis is incredible and it feels very GL like in size and fun. Lots of the time I wonder why I upgrade the old body cars since most of the time I should just be putting the old trans in the new body instead.

WCSS 14 - Jefferson County Fairgrounds, Port Townsend, WA
I would not bring my dog again. My rather well behaved Golden Retriever turned crazy at the show years ago. Normally fine in crowds, dog park, on or off leash but not at the show. Find a friend to watch if you can.

More progress/questions on Legacy reseal
ShawnW replied to 92_rugby_subie's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe oil pump screw holes: The one at the top are for an optional belt shield that is found on later year cars with manual transmissions. The bottom center one holds a coolant pipe that goes across the front of the engine for an oil cooler found on some models.

Foolish way to replace Timing Idler Pulley
ShawnW replied to ycageL urabuS's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXEconomically challenged would mean running the covers to me. Risk all the grit, grime and crap getting in the belt, idlers, seals because of a few little 10MM bolts? I think that is the silly part.

USMB Shirts 4 Sale at WCSS
Bring some extra cash to WCSS if you want one of the new USMB shirts. Show visitors get first dibs on the first run of shirts but they will be available to everyone in the coming weeks. If your size/color isn't available at the show fill out an order form and either write a check or give cash to them and I will ship the shirt to you in a couple weeks. There are Gildan ones that are the same type of TShirt as we had printed on in previous runs, and then American Apparel ones that are really comfortable and lightweight. Will also have a couple Sweatshirts to show at the fairgrounds. The Gildans are $12, the American Apparels are $18 and the hooded sweatshirts are $30. Only the Gildans will be available in person at the show but samples of all the offerings will be there so you can order anything that isn't available at the show and have it shipped to you, just fill out an order form.

2012 Subie With 1950 Buick Tranny
ShawnW replied to texasjack's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHonestly both of your points are valid. The KIA/Hyundai cars can be pretty poorly built, and the Subaru CVT hasn't been a fan favorite for every driver. Its personal preference and Jack has a right to his opinion. I personally think he could go drive the new Impreza from the dealer lot before making a final decision. The car is great and the CVT in that seems even better than the Legacy one to me. The legacy you drove may have had a reflash done or not, a fluid change that it shouldn't have, etc. Drive another car before you throw in the towel on all Subaru's being bad. Or just find a 2010 or so Forester or Impreza with the old 4eat transmission. Great vehicle and a proven automatic transmission.

Best deal to buy tires in LA?
ShawnW replied to krnsamiam's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDid you try discount tire direct? Its kindof a best of the internet and store pricing combined. Tire Rack is fine too. Did you try Sams Club or Costco?

Oil filter ?
ShawnW replied to john40iowa's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI use these all the time. They are running on WRX's, STI's, etc. Its a compact unit that works fine. I also have aftermarket alternatives I like and sell too. Virtually everything offered for your car is the same size as that one.

Pay recommendations?
I have been on both sides of it and when in training I proved myself in a week and went to full technician. I felt for the guy supervising me but I was teaching him as much as he was me so you could be okay. It all depends on who you get and how smart they are with a wrench and the customers. When I had someone working with me, I actually made more money than I did without. It can certainly go both ways.

Help! Intake Upgrade, 01 Legacy
Agree. Subaru's design pulls the coldest air in from the outside. These usually pull hot air from the engine compartment. The only upgrade I have seen is a clean K&N or Perrin washable filter dropped into the factory air box and that's only if its serviced properly and the car is Turbocharged and tuned for it.
