Nice wagon! I love black cars but I won't own one. Looks like a cool club you are working there. -

Welcome! Nice car for sure. -
Buy a straight edge and use techniques by the post written by General Disorder. You should be able to take a bare minimum off while still keeping them flat and within tolerance in this situation. GD's post: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=126868&highlight=resurfacing Shopping Google for a straight edge. https://www.google.com/webhp?rlz=1C1ASUM_enUS473US473&sourceid=chrome-instant&ie=UTF-8#hl=en&safe=off&rlz=1C1ASUM_enUS473US473&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=machinest%20straight%20edge&oq=&gs_l=&pbx=1&fp=4290f030722b0041&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.&biw=1680&bih=925 Or you can ship the heads to me and I will do it and ship them back asap.

used heads on a new block
ShawnW replied to soobiefreak85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
People buy replacement shortblocks all the time. I personally don't like rebuilding heads for people that are using an old block but its been done too. -

HELP: Cant compress calipers
ShawnW replied to subi dude's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Either way on new questions. If its related to the calipers I would follow up here if its a new topic I would post a new one (or search). -
Bosal used to make a nice one but stopped in 2008. 229-577 It may be possible to find old inventory of that item, was a good part. Otherwise a round muffler is what it is and an exhaust shop can probably install one for around $125 if you shop around.

The ones I listed above are GR2's, the last 2 available from my supplier, then it has another line item if I need more. Items that I used to be able to get as KYB are now available in a Sachs brand product, I haven't had any complaints on the ones I installed a week ago to a Loyale. -
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymodel/2012_Subaru_Outback.shtml Estimated $200/year savings. Your mileage may vary. How you drive affects it. But for the most part I think its pretty accurate. I did the one for my 2006 Outback and it came out like my wife and I tend to get. I drive aggressive on the highway and she does in the city but otherwise passive one or the other for each of us.

I can get KYB 341065's which are for a 3dr sedan RX 4wd for $70.20 ea. In stock at my local warehouse. Shipping these isn't expensive with Fedex Ground should be less than $20 for both boxes. -
If you take the money the CVT saves you in gas and put it in a savings account I bet it would save you enough to replace the trans by the time it fails. If it doesn't fail you have a nice down payment for the next car if you are so inclined. The reverse issue was a recalled/bulletined item and is solved thru a trip to the dealer. Known issue and not all are affected. They are really quite nice to drive and I wouldn't even blink to have one if I could afford one.

The pistons are for a quad cam 2.5 motor if you didn't know that already. The majority of the pistons I see for these are not sized to the block right, just using an A/B/C size piston isn't usually enough to do the clearance correctly. I size all of my rebuilds by hand with a bore gauge and find most are way too small by spec. I have eliminated piston slap in many engines in the past couple of years. To me it looks like a deal as long as all 4 are within specs for your block. On a budget I would probably put all of the originals back in their original positions and just put new rings in it. Let me know if you need any engine parts I can often beat prices.
