The Crazyman is back!

Give me a call again when you are going to the yard for the glass. -
It comes down to how good you are with the sprayer and how many coats you are going to do between sandings. If you make a lot of runs and have issues it could take a lot of paint. Practice on a fender or something and see how many it takes to do the fender, then do the math to know how much smaller the fender is than the rest of the brat.

Best for what is the question. Power? The last one (2002 or so Brighton Legacy Models). Very rare. Impressive power for the displacement. Reliable. I think 96, single port exhaust, roller rocker, with adjustable valves is if its taken care of. I personally don't see a build quality difference between 1989-94 and 95-99 model Legacy and Outback models. All are built in the USA either way, and when they have a 2.2L engine they still, mechanical and interior, etc seem equally good to me. If I was swayed to think that a 94 was a better built car than a 95 all that would be tossed in the trash for the single reason. Power seat belts. Hate them. Can't find a good one in the yards right now either, been looking for a month and most are bad. Need one for a friend if anybody has one btw. The 98-02 model years I have seen quite a few with a rod tossed thru the top of the block. They just stick out (literally too) in my mind as bad. I think its the oil pumps in that era. If I am swapping an engine with the harness, for some other vehicle creation, (VW, old Subaru swap, etc) I either want a 97 Impreza 2.2 or a 94 Legacy one. Easiest OBDII harness to modify and easiest OBD1 to modify.

Does it run strange or is the CEL on only? Has the check engine light ever flashed or just solid? Flashing means misfire. Have you done your services (60K?-spark plugs, etc). I don't think thats a valid code number either. Id have to check my factory manuals but most of the misfire or injector codes are lower like P0244, etc.

rear strut - rubber bump stop question

Its dealer PN 21023GA610, have never been able to find it anywhere but a dealer supplier. -
You just contradicted yourself there. You just said, too much money for a car that doesn't hold its value well. Seems to me they are holding up well and are in demand, especially one that is in the condition you are seeking. You may want to consider building a car that meets the specs instead. Its commonly done and you get to insure the car as a straight boring Impreza instead of the expensive car that came that way.

If its just knocking and didn't throw the rod and he likes the car I would buy a dealer shortblock for it. I can ship you one, or even build you one for a bit less money, if they are ridiculous in price there. Right around $1000 if I build you one probably between 12 and 1500 from Subaru. Another option is to put an EJ25 shortblock in it with the old heads. Since its an auto you can use a slightly older block too if you want. A 1997-2001 model would all bolt in fine.

It can also have an incorrect fluid level. Check in park, engine running, after a short drive where you have used all the gears including reverse. Don't try a flush-if you have symptoms thats a bad idea. I have seen people unable to pull away from a shop after one because it washed all the clutch material out of the transmission. If the trans is perfect but missed a service or 2 then a flush can be done. Otherwise general maintenance is a 4 quart drain and fill every 15-30K per the service manual. I would bet it has original fluid in it. A shame since this trans should last 250K if serviced. There could be a filter that was added but it would be in the engine compartment on the drivers side between the valve cover and the frame. Mostly legacys got this treatment but I have installed the kit to an Impreza before. The filter add on kit is PN 31099AA091. It has the lines and the filter to add to the car for a filter. Otherwise the "filter" is in the trans pan and is not typically serviced unless the trans is going to be rebuilt. If its plugged, the clutch material and such in the trans is gone and it needs repair. I typically add this kit to Outbacks after I do a 2.2L conversion-after the conversion there is room for the kit where there wasn't room with the 2.5. I can order any part you need thru my shop and I know the junk from the good stuff. GD also lists good sources that are liked by people here.

The 1507 usually has to do with the idle air control valve. On that car I believe its above the front of the throttle body and has a shiny electrical motor on the end of it sitting horizontally. The 1133 is likely due to a failing O2 sensor. Its probably shorted from the puddle. When you have both of these codes-sometimes the neutral switch on the trans is failing. Try unplugging it and driving it with it unplugged. If it drives better that is likely your problem and its under $25 at the dealer. Its also wise to get some shop/compressed air and blow out the electrical connectors on the back of the right side of the engine. 3 big ones on the edge of the bellhousing.

I speculate that its not an issue in most of the world. I don't think salt is put on roads in many areas outside the US. Its just expensive and in most snow and ice areas in the rest of the world they know how to drive on the stuff without it. Im doing one here in Colorado but its fairly rare here unless the car has seen areas east of here. For the most part they didn't rust out here.
