Not that I recommend it, but Subaru's answer to the faulty headgasket is a bottle of stopleak you add to your coolant. You might give it a try before you get in over your head with a h/g replacement - not doubting your wrenching skills; it can be pretty messy, though.

I assume you're talking about the door guard "ding strip". Often they are coated with a clear film of plastic to prevent oxidation.

The SVX is notably bad on transmissions and brakes. Take a tour through the svx website for a bit and see forums on their specific problems. It's a good website with a lot of the same characters there as you may have seen here.
